FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 31, 2019

FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR

“Rejoice, O Jerusalem!”

The fourth Sunday of Lent, Laetare Sunday, falls roughly at the midpoint of our season of diligent fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. It’s the traditional day for temporarily relaxing our discipline and indulging in more joyous activity, as signified by the option for rose-colored vestments at Mass.

The readings for the day capture that spirit of joy. In the first reading, the long suffering Hebrews at last enter the Promised Land and for the first time eat of its crops. In the Gospel, the compassionate father twice demands joy in almost identical words:

(At the 10:00 Mass at Holy Trinity, we get different readings, because that Mass is set aside for the scrutinies, preparing the catechumens for baptism at the Easter Vigil.)

So today’s a good day to allow yourself a little extra joy, shared with family, friends, neighbors, or especially your brothers and sisters in Christ.

Please note that full participation in the Safe Environment program is required for parish volunteers. I am grateful for your help, but keeping your documents updated is not optional. Please renew them in a timely fashion, in advance of their expiration, or you must withdraw from your work or ministry until you are newly compliant. If you wish to begin the process for volunteering, or have other questions, please call your parish office.

Holy Trinity Church features a choral concert this Sunday, March 31, at 4:00.

Laurie Lanz, the music director at St. Malachy, informs me that the organ at that church is not functioning. I am unwilling to replace it now, before we know more about parish consolidation and the future of our shared mission. I have asked the finance council at St. Malachy to explore temporary accommodations. (I am proceeding with some improvements at Holy Trinity only with monies long ago earmarked for specific projects. By proceeding with these, I am complying with the earmarks and not rendering judgments about whether those improvements will serve our new mission.)

—Fr. Dave

To the servants: To the older son: “Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.”

“But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.”

ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! We Are Ambassadors For Christ - When reflecting on faith we often consider the importance of trust. This reflection is typically focused on our need to trust in God and not to worry or be anxious about anything. However, we cannot forget all that God has entrusted to us as his beloved children. He has given us life and gifts and talents and trusts that we will use them for the good of others in fulfillment of his will. In light of this, we should take to heart Saint Paul’s words in today’s second reading: “so we are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us.” Aware of all that God has entrusted to us we become his representatives in the world, reflecting his light and love through our words and deeds. On Mission for The Church Alive! Becomes our opportunities to be Christ’s representatives in our parishes, our communities and beyond as he entrusts all of us with the task of building up the Church. As we work to have our hearts transformed and strengthened this Lent may the result be our ever-faithful witness to God’s life at work in us. To learn more and to stay informed visit onmissionchurchalive.org.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

SCHOOL NEWS April will bring showers and report cards! The fourth quarter starts this week. Where has the year gone? The zoo mobile will visit the students in grades K-8 on Thursday. We can’t wait to see what they bring with them.

THIRD GRADE NEWS In Reading, third grade recently performed a reader’s theater for other classes in the school. The students were excellent in speaking and acting out their roles! The class also finished the story, “The Man Who Invented Basketball”, just in time for March Madness! Students are learning to summarize longer stories and to use graphic sources within a story to help their understanding. Math class is proving to be an exciting challenge for the class. They have mastered multiplying and dividing 0-5, but 6-9 are much more difficult. Students are doing a great job learning all of their fact families! Third grade loves to use the school’s Chromebooks. They especially enjoy playing vocabulary and math games. In Religion, students are learning about Lent and preparing for Easter. They are excited to read at the school’s weekly Stations of the Cross.

SEVEN LAST WORDS Please join us today, Sunday, March 31, at 4:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Church for a free choral/orchestral performance of Dubois’ Seven Last Words in addition to two instrumental works by Elgar. All are welcome!

40 DAYS FOR LIFE Saturday, April 6 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. will be Holy Trinity’s time slot to pray in front of Planned Parenthood in Pittsburgh. We attend in 2 shifts meeting at Holy Trinity parking lot at 10:15 a.m. or 12:15 p.m. to pray between 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. or 1:00-3:00 p.m. Why should I pray at Planned Parenthood? 1. It brings the love of Christ to women who are in crisis. 2. It lets people know they have options. Did you know that 73.8% of women who have an abortion experienced “pressure” from others to make that choice? 3. A child in the womb is a child of God. When you pray at Planned Parenthood, you will be supporting trained counselors who are there to offer support and present options to women with troubled pregnancies. The counselors are the only ones interacting with the women having troubled pregnancies. Call Helen Stamatakis at 412-480-2908 or email [email protected] if you would like to rideshare to Pittsburgh.

GOOD FRIDAY Join us on Good Friday, April 19, from 1:30-3:00 p.m. for the Liturgy of the Passion & Death of the Lord at St. John of God Parish. Fr. Poecking will be the celebrant. There will be a bus provided from Holy Trinity to St. John of God. RSVP at www.RocKenRocatholics.org/holy-week-2019 to reserve your place on the bus or call 412-787-2140.
