Family Formation question: “Why does Fr. Shawn speak directly into the chalice?”

O ne of the assignments for the children in our Family Formation program asked if they noticed anything special at Mass on Sundays. Children

are always observing! Congratulations to the Felice family: the abovementioned question concerns the rubrics of the Mass. Rubrics are the rules that priests and deacons are supposed to follow when Mass is celebrated. We don’t “make it up as we go,” as it were. Priests and deacons have to follow certain standards when all the sacraments are celebrated, but the Holy Eucharist most especially because it is the greatest of the seven sacraments! As Catholics, we know that the Holy Eucharist, or the Blessed Sacrament, is not bread and wine even though our physical senses experience only those two substances. In fact, we know that a change has occurred. That change is called Transubstantiation. We cannot normally experience it with our senses, but because we have faith that God fulfills His promises, we know with absolute certainty that Holy Communion is the living, glorified, resurrected Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ. However, how does ordinary bread and wine become the Flesh and Blood of Jesus? Two things are necessary for that to happen. First, the Holy Spirit must be called down upon the bread and wine. Second, the words of consecration that Jesus Himself said on the night of the Last Supper (“This is My Body…This is My Blood…”) must be said over the elements of bread and wine by a valid priest (either Catholic or Orthodox). The calling down of the Holy Spirit is key because it is He who changes the bread and wine into the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus through the words of the priest. When the Holy Spirit is called down in the Mass, it is called the epiclesis. That is why our parish has a dove on the ceiling painted over the altar. It reminds us that the Holy Spirit will be called down for Transubstantiation to occur. The epiclesis occurs at Mass when the priest makes a circular movement with his hands and then places them directly over the bread and wine just before he says the words of consecration. That action, accompanied by the prayer to God the Father asking Him to send the Holy Spirit upon our altar in a special way, reveals to our senses visibly what is happening invisibly: the Holy Spirit is truly coming upon our altar to change bread and wine into Jesus’ Body and Blood through the words of the priest! The consecration, in fact, in its entirety is the action of the Holy Spirit. The rubrics of the Mass indicate that the priest should breathe on the bread and wine as he is repeating Christ’s words. Why? It may look like the priest is speaking into the chalice, but what he is doing is breathing on the wine as the words of consecration are pronounced over the chalice (just as he is to breathe on the Host at consecration). One of the titles of the Holy Spirit is the “Breath of God.” Whenever God breathes, as it were, in the Bible, He gives life. Life and breath are always paired. In Genesis 1:2, the

world is nothing but a formless, dark void until God breathes life over the waters and the process of creation is revealed. In Genesis 2:7, “The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being.” Throughout the Old Testament, there are many more instances when God’s breath (who is actually the Holy Spirit) generates life either physically or spiritually (as seen in Job, Ezekiel, Isaiah, and the Psalms). However, the high point of the Bible is always the Gospel texts because all Sacred Scripture points to Jesus Christ. On the night of the Resurrection, He appeared to the frightened disciples in the locked upper room. “Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, so I send you.’ And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained’” (John 20:19-23). Jesus’ Resurrection re-created the world in the order of His grace just as God had created the physical world. Both creations involved the Holy Spirit. The Breath of God the Father and Jesus, His Son, is the very Person of the Holy Spirit. Moreover, when the Catholic Church received her visible mission by the Holy Spirit to go into the world according to the life of Christ at Pentecost, His action was accompanied by a “strong, driving wind”—like His breath breathing life into the Church, the Body of Christ, just as Adam had experienced in Genesis (see Acts 2). In addition, in the traditional rite of Baptism (always used before 1962 and still used upon request by parents), the priest greets the infant at the entrance of the church, asks questions about his or her faith, and then breathes on the child three times (to symbolize the Trinity) as the infant will soon become God’s adopted son or daughter through the pouring of water and the action of the Trinity, including of course, the Holy Spirit (who blesses the water for Baptism). Consequently, breathing on the bread and wine as the words of consecration are pronounced makes perfect sense according to the mind of the Church. Our senses visibly experience what is invisibly occurring once again: Just as Jesus breathed and imparted the Holy Spirit on the disciples after His Resurrection, so the priest (in the person of Christ) breathes on the bread and wine as they are changed in Transubstantiation by the Holy Spirit. Our Holy Communion that we receive which results from Transubstantiation gives the faithful new life in abundance as mankind can now connect with God’s divinity by consuming His Flesh and Blood in this life until, we pray, we will see Him face-to-face in eternity when we will need no sacramental signs. May we take the profound privilege we are given to receive the life of God in Holy Communion to heart by growing in His love, grace, and mercy each day.
