Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 15, 2018

A publication called Frontline is periodically mailed to the church office and in a recent copy I found this:

Google Knows Everything! Caller: Is this Gordon’s Pizza? Google: No sir, it’s GOOGLE Pizza. Caller: I must have dialed a wrong number. Sorry. Google: No sir, GOOGLE bought Gordon’s Pizza last month. Caller: OK. I would like to order a pizza. Google: Do you want your usual, sir? Caller: My usual? You know me? Google: According to our caller ID data sheet, the last 12 times you called you ordered an extra-large pizza with three cheeses, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms and meatballs on a thick crust. Caller: OK! That’s what I want. Google: May I suggest that this time you order a pizza with ricotta, arugula, sun-dried tomatoes and olives on a whole wheat gluten-free thin crust? Caller: What? I detest vegetables! Google: Your cholesterol is not good, sir. Caller: How the h*** do you know!?!? Google: Well, we cross-referenced your home phone number with your medical records. We have the results of your blood tests for the last seven years. Caller: Okay, but I do not want your rotten vegetable pizza! I already take medication for my cholesterol. Google: Excuse me sir, but you have not taken your medication regularly. According to our database, you only purchased a box of 30 cholesterol tablets once, at Drug RX Network, four months ago. Caller: I bought more from another drugstore. Google: That doesn’t show on your credit card statement. Caller: I paid in cash. Google: But you did not withdraw enough cash according to your bank statement. Caller: I have other sources of cash. Google: That doesn’t show on your last tax return unless you bought them using an undeclared income source, which is against the law. Caller: WHAT THE HECK!!! Google: I’m sorry, sir, we use such information only with the sole intention of helping you. Caller: Enough already! I’m sick to death of Google, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and all the others. I’m going to an island without internet, cable TV; where there is no cell phone service and no one to watch me or spy on me. Google: I understand sir, but you need to renew your passport first. It expired six weeks ago! It’s probably true that all the information pertinent to our lives is floating around out there in cyberspace or the cloud or whatever they call it and we can only pray that that personal information remains secure. We’ve all heard or read horror stories of how lives have been damaged when personal information has been stolen and used by evil people. May we be spared from that nightmarish situation. Unless the one with knowledge of our personal information is God. Actually, there’s no “unless” about it, God already knows everything about us. In today’s Second Reading, St. Paul makes that point to the Ephesians. God “has blessed us in Christ,” and “chose us in Him, before the foundation of the world,” writes the Apostle. Furthermore, “In Christ we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things…..so that we might exist for the praise of His glory.” Yes, the Lord knows everything about us! That could be a scary thought because everything about me would have to include my sins. Yet, St. Paul assures us that for God that is not a deterrent but an opportunity. It provides for God a chance to assure you and me of his healing mercy and a way to send us out to make known the glory of Jesus Christ, something God chose us to do before we were born. In other words, even then God knew we could fulfill our calling, we could live according to our purpose, or, rather, God’s purpose for us. God has confidence in you and me. Let us live so that God’s confidence is rewarded.

May God bless all of you. Father Hambrough

We welcome to our faith Harrison Austin Bogrand, son of Matthew and Jill, who was baptized in our church last week. May God bless and guide Harrison and his family

as they journey with Christ to the Kingdom.

Men's White House Retreat

All men of the parish are invited to join us on our annual retreat at White House. This will be a silent, guided retreat based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. It’s a peaceful break from the chaos and confusion of everyday life. It’s like a 3-day vacation with Christ on their beautiful 80-acre campus high on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. All meals and private lodging are provided. Our retreat begins the evening of Thursday, August 23, 2018 and concludes Sunday afternoon, August 26, 2018. There is no set fee to attend a retreat at White House! White House operates on a free will offering basis, asking those in attendance to simply give what they feel they can at the conclusion of the retreat. To register call Patrick Lampe at 314-638-4452 or visit www.whretreat.org to find additional dates.

If you or someone you know is expecting a baby, you are welcome to put the parent’s names and/or the baby’s name on a rose by the statue of Mary in church so that they will be prayed for during the pregnancy.

Are you being called to share your faith with others?

We are looking for a catechist to teach 2nd grade PSR. If you are interested in sharing your faith

with others, please contact Christina Sanders, Pastoral Associate at 314.743.8604 or

[email protected].

RCIA—Journey in Faith

RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, at St. Mark Catholic Church is a Journey in Faith in which men and women become full members of the Catholic Church. (St. Mark Church also

offers these classes for children past the age of 7 years who have not been previously baptized.) RCIA is a process in which we look at ourselves, tell our stories, and figure out how God and the Catholic Faith fits into our lives. We ask questions and we search for truth.

Have you been thinking about joining the Catholic Church?

Have you been Baptized but have not received First Holy Communion or been Confirmed?

If you answer “yes” to either of these questions, contact Christina Sanders, St. Mark Pastoral Assistant: 314.743.8604 or [email protected] for more information about the RCIA Inquiry classes which will begin in early October.
