Ron’s thoughts…. Some time ago at a previous parish, members of the Pastoral Team would give the yearly message about Stewardship. When it was my turn I prepared diligently a message about what it means to be a good steward of our parish community. I used some good Scripture passages about Time, Talent and Treasure. Honestly I thought I did a good job without pushing a guilt trip upon those sitting in the pews. The message about giving in many different ways was conveyed to help the people of God see that it is through their generosity that ministry is alive and well in the parish. For the most part it was well received. But at the end of Liturgy one gentleman, who I knew well, came up to me and said, “Ya” know Dcn. Ron I get what you said, but I hate all this money talk. I come to church to pray, not to pay.” My response to him was simple. I said, “Yes I agree, but please realize prayer does a lot but it doesn’t keep the lights on.” Well, I guess he didn’t like that response and he stormed off. I have worked in parishes full-time for over 30 years. The hardest thing to do is give a talk about stewardship and tithing. No one wants to hear the talk about money. I get that, but at the same time it is important to present and reflect on where we are, not only as a parish in terms of Stewardship, but also in our own personal lives. This weekend we will hear the state of the parish. Since coming to St. Mark I have been so impressed with the generosity of this community. The leadership at St. Mark strives to continue to be good responsible decision makers when it comes to the resources put before us by you the people of God. Thank you for continuing to see the need and responding to that need. St. Mark moves forward because of your generous hearts. Continue to pray and ask God where he needs you to be a good steward in time, talent and treasure. Thank you again. Walk the talk. Be Peace! D-Ron ([email protected])

A cup of Joe . . . Greetings in Christ, all!

In our readings this week, we are hearing from a book in the Old Testament that we do not often hear from: II Maccabees (mac-uh-beez). This is a short book in the OT that is hyper focused on a short period of time in the history of the Jews: covering the Jewish revolt against Greek dominion. It primarily focuses on the great Jewish General Judas Maccabee and his family, who helped lead the revolt. An interesting historical note is that this book reveals a few things that we as Catholics hold dear: Praying for the dead, the value of martyrdom, the intercession of the saints and the belief that the dead will rise body and soul. At the time these books were written, these ideas were gaining real traction in the Jewish world, mostly em-braced by a group of Jews that were called "Pharisees". As much as we used to thinking of the Pharisees as Jesus' enemy, they were in fact at different times defenders of Jesus and the movement that came after him because of the belief in the resurrection of the dead. So, anyway, the Greeks and Jews fought an awful, ex-tended war within Israel and many of the Jews laid down their lives rather than break God's laws. The story we hear in our first reading is a shortened account of one of those martyrdoms. We are so grateful to God that, despite our best efforts, He reveals Himself to us and helps us pass along the truth about Who He Is and what He calls us to be. I love you guys and thank you for letting me be your priest.
