AFTERWORD….Fr. Dave Howell MOVING AGAIN!...I guess it should not come as a sur-prise to find out I will be a part of a move and renovation project. It seems to have been my pattern of the last 44 years. In my deacon internship year, the parish bought a house next to the little church built in 1862. So I had to move from our rented apartment and office to the new house. In my first assignment as a priest, at St. Gerard in Lansing also built a new rectory & offices; hence another move. In 1981, I was re-assigned to St. John in Jackson. Both the church and the rectory were renovated. For four months, we celebrated Liturgy under the scaffold-ing, in a space that smelled of new paint rather than in-cense. When the painting was done, we moved to the gym for 3 more months while the church was renovat-ed. My last year there I was a part of the planning to build a parish center. My five years as the pastor of St. Joseph in Dexter, we renovated the church, the rectory, the parish offices (the former convent) and the parish center (the former school). I returned to St. John in Jackson for 3 years and got to raise the funds to do repairs in the school and to pay off the debt for the parish center I had helped to plan. In 1993, I went to Brighton to start a new parish. In 1994, we moved into the house that would be our parish offices, meeting rooms, weekday chapel and my home. Each week for 5 years, we set up & took down our tem-porary worship space in a public school. In 1996, we moved out of the rectory into temporary rented space so that we could pick up & move the rectory to clear a space for the church (I moved to a duplex). We moved into our new church & offices in 1998. In 2005, we be-gan to plan to enlarge our facilities by 30,000 sq ft, The original space was renovated so everything got moved around. The renovated & enlarged church was dedicat-ed in 2010. Ten years later I moved to St. Mark. Starting this Sunday, I will be a part of another reno-vation project and be a part of moving our worship space! What fun, he said! (Actually, that’s not quite true, but we’ll make the best of it, knowing the end re-sult will be worth it!) FORGETTING MY MASK ...On Monday, I went to give Communion to those assembled and had to go back up to the altar to get my mask. I hope it won’t be needed before I get used to using it. I don’t wear a mask for me, I wear it for you. It’s not comfortable, but it’s a proven way to protect others. I would encourage all of us to wear a mask especially inside or when less than 6 ft. away from someone outside. When we gather for Eu-charist, we celebrate the suffering, death and resurrec-tion of the Lord. It seems a real contradiction that I wouldn’t put up with being temporarily uncomfortable. (If the mask over the mouth is too uncomfortable, an-other option is to use a light-weight plexiglass shield.) On Monday, Pope Francis wrote: “On the Day of Judgement we will not be judged for our ideas, but for the compassion we have shown to others.”

Ron’s Thoughts… As Christians we follow Jesus and profess him to be Lord and Savior. His teachings become what we strive to follow and make a part of our lives. What I BELIEVE that means for our daily living, is that we should try to be more like him. Simply put, as Christians, we should try to BE JESUS FOR OTHERS every day. So what does that exactly look like? Well, let’s just keep it simple and use one of his greatest teachings, “Love one another, as I have loved you” (John 15:12). To make it clear, this IS NOT JUST A SUGGESTION, IT IS A COMMAND. If Jesus is God, then Jesus knows what our world needs and that is LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER. The love Jesus talks about is a love that puts others needs before our own. It is a love that respects others, no matter how different they are than us. It is a love that looks at those around you and nudges you to ask, “What can I do for you?” It is a love that sees first, the good in every person. It is a love that helps you to listen more and criticize less. It is a love that helps you to speak words of encouragement and life, rather than de-stroy the life of another. As Christians we follow Jesus! This means today, in a world that seems so divided, WE SHOULD BE LEADING THE WAY, to think of others first, to care for others first, to show compassion for others first, to love others first! IT IS NOT JUST JESUS’ JOB, IT IS OUR JOB TOO! Walk the talk. Be Peace! D-Ron ([email protected]) Ceiling Project Update! Begins this week August 3rd. Following will be our

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Although not a Holy Day of Obligation, we will be cele-brating this feast day with Mass at 9:30 a.m. on Satur-day, August 15th.

Update on our Family Promise initiative During the pandemic, the families in the program are being housed in a hotel/motel with all services being held at the day center. Therefore, we, as a Parish, will be making a cash contribution from our Christian service fund in lieu of our week of volunteer service. If you wish to contribute directly to the Family Promise program, their website is https://familypromiseofgc.org/ and click on the donate tab. We will keep you updated as to the status of the program as we navigate these times.

Our deepest needs The word of God serves up a tremendous feast for us today. Isaiah beckons all who hunger and thirst to come to the Lord for satisfaction. The psalmist cries out, “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs” (Psalm 145:16). Saint Paul tells us that nothing can sepa-rate us from the love of God. Fi-nally, in the Gospel, we hear the story of the miraculous feeding of over five thousand people from a mere five loaves and two fish. Most of us have our material needs met on a day-to-day basis. These scriptures, nevertheless, have much to say to the contem-porary believer. We must ask ourselves, “Where are my deepest hungers? Where are my thirsts?” After material needs are satisfied and, in some cases, over-satisfied, many people still experience a deep longing for spiritual balance and well-being. As the loaves and fish are multi-plied in today’s Gospel, perhaps our prayer can be a longing for the satisfaction of the deepest needs that only God can fill.

Prayer intention of Pope Francis for August The Maritime World
