Message from our Pastor

Todays Readings First Reading — Isaiah speaks of the Servant whom the L upholds; he shall bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7). Psalm — The Lord will bless his people with peace (Psalm 29). Second Reading — Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit; he went out healing and doing good (Acts 10:34-38). Gospel — A voice comes from heaven proclaiming Jesus as the beloved Son, with whom God is well pleased (Matthew 3:13-17). This Is My Beloved Son This Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christ-mas season. In the scriptures we see one more epiphany, or manifestation, of the Spirit of God in Jesus—but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a child. Jesus’ baptism also serves as the inauguration of his prophetic mis-sion and the messianic age. Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in the proclamation from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ baptism in wa-ter goes almost unnoticed. The crucial moment comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a voice from heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). Sunday Readings and Reflection

Vision Statement: Baptized into Christ Jesus, we worship as one and reach out to all.

We are delighted to welcome each and every one who has come to wor-ship with us today. Whether you’re a longtime parishioner, a newcomer, or just visiting, know that our desire is to extend God’s loving presence to all. If you would like to register, you can download the registration form from our website, www.stmartha.com, or find a copy in the narthex on the welcome kiosk.

Welcome

Dear Parish Family, Our own baptism was an important moment in our lives. That was the day that we were claimed once and for all as God’s sons and daughters. It was the day that we were first given the promise of eternal life. If we don’t know when our baptism was, we should look that up, know it, and even celebrate it every year. We cele-brate other important dates: birthdays, anniversaries,

and retirement days. We should also celebrate the wonderful day when we were claimed for God forever! Today, the Church cele-brates the baptism of our Lord Jesus. It was an important moment for us because he showed us how important baptism is and why we should follow His example. The voice of the Father speaks that same words to us every day of our lives: “This is my beloved son, in him I am well pleased.” We pray that we may hear God’s voice saying he is well pleased with us. We have been claimed as His children and we are so grateful for His incredible love in our lives. Fr. T.J.

THOUGHTS FROM THE LOFT

What are the Propers and Ordinary? Have you ever noticed that some parts of the Mass are consistent from week to week and some parts change based on the season or day? The consistent parts are called the Ordinary of the Mass. It is encouraged that the congregation, in informal words, “take ownership” of their role in the Mass by reciting/singing the Ordinary of the Mass. It is optional to allow choirs and scholas to sing more elaborate versions of some of these parts alone, but our bishops do ask that the congregation retain, at the minimum, some of those parts (like a call and re-sponse between the choir and congrega-tion in the Gloria or Credo). The Propers are then all the parts of the Mass that change dependent on the day. If you take a look at your own personal Missal, they are often divided to include all of the options for the Ordinary of the Mass in the front followed by the select anti-phons/readings for each day. St. Martha's Bus Trip To Texas

may purchase tickets through Faith Direct: https://membership.faithdirect.net/events/details/3899 **No children under the age of 18 due to the Safe Haven restrictions. Departure: 8 AM at St. Martha Catholic Church Join thousands of Texans at the Texas Rally for Life on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Capitol in Austin. Show the media and our elected officials that Texas is PRO-LIFE! The 2020 Texas Rally for Life will commemorate the 47th an-niversary of the tragic Roe v. Wade Supreme Court deci-sion in 1973, which made abortion legal throughout all nine months of pregnancy. In the wake of Roe, legal abor-tion in our nation has claimed the lives of more than 60 million unborn children and has hurt countless women and men. The Rally will feature pro-life speakers and leaders from across the state. For more info visit texasrallyforlife.org. We hope to see a huge turnout as we March for Life! Questions? Contact Terrell Nelson, 713-503-7684 or [email protected]
