From the Collar What a marvelous catch Jesus makes in today’s gospel!
After ishing all night and catching nothing, Peter obeysJesus, puttingouthisboatandnetsonceagain.Hemakesagreatcatchof ish.Evenmore, hecomestoagreatinsightabout himself. Encounter with Jesus leads Peter to seehimselfashereallyis(I am a sinful man),andtobecomewhat he is not yet:a follower of Jesus participating in his saving mission. JesuscaughtPeter.Hewillcatchus,too. All we need to do is heed Jesus’ word. Whatprecipitated the radical response of the irst dis‐cipleswho left everything and followed Jesus? Clearly, Jesus’words and actions. To ishermen who had laboredfruitlesslyallnight,Jesussaystryagainandleadsthemtoa great catch. To a sinful Peter who considers himselfunworthy of Jesus’ company, Jesus says follow me andtransforms his life’s purpose. Jesus’ words are powerfulwords that bind us to himself. Jesus taught the crowds. The miracle of the great catch makes concrete the goodnews of Jesus’ teaching:God’s intervention overturning the futility of mere human work, the superabundance of God’s actions on our behalf, the invitation to follow in Jesus’ footsteps. The miracle of the catch of ish is thebridge to anothermiracle:hearing the Good News and living it. The disciples’ willingness to be caught enabledthemtoseemoredeeplyintothetruthof Jesus’teaching. It is the power of Jesus’ good news that drew them tofollowhim.Todayweare thecatch thatmakes theGoodNewsvisiblewhenweallowGodtowork inandthroughus. Following Jesus can hardly be an impulse decision, althoughthegospelaccountmightmakeitseemthatway.Between themiracle of the great catch and the disciplesleaving everything to follow Jesus stands Peter’srecognitionthatheisa sinful man.TheirencounterwithJesus helped the disciples see themselves for who theywere and opened up the willingness to change their lifecourse. They would still be ishermen—but now theircatchwouldbehumanbeingstowhomtheywouldtellthegoodnewsofGod’spresence. Jesus is thenetGod lowersintotheseaofhumanity, knowingfullwelltherewillbeagreatcatch.
