Matthew 6:33

PASTOR’S CORNER This weekend we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Lent or Laetare Sunday. Laetare means "Rejoice" in Latin, and the Introit (entrance antiphon) in both the Traditional Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo is Isaiah 66:10-11, which begins "Laetare, Jerusalem" ("Rejoice, O Jerusalem"). Because the midpoint of Lent is the Thursday of the third week of Lent, Laetare Sunday has traditionally been viewed as a day of celebration, on which the austerity of Lent is briefly lessened. The passage from Isaiah continues, "rejoice with joy, you that have been in sorrow," and on Laetare Sunday, the purple vestments of Lent are set aside, and rose ones are used instead. At this point in Lent, the season can start to weigh on us and so we are given hope on the Fourth Sunday of Lent and reminded of what we are going towards. Lent is meant to prepare us for Easter or the great feast of hope, the Resurrection. Today's Gospel is meant to strengthen our hope by reminding us of why Jesus came. Jesus came not to condemn us but to save us from our sins. So often we feel condemned because we have sins that we wish to stop committing but are unable to stop. This can lead to feelings of despair and it is important to go to the cross in those moments. Sin is always associated with darkness and virtue with the light. Whenever we find ourselves committing sins we bring them to the cross so they will go from darkness to light. However, sometimes we are so ashamed of our sins that we would rather leave them in the darkness then bring them to the light. When we remain in darkness then we condemn ourselves because we deny ourselves of the freedom won for us on the cross. It is not easy to take our burdens to the cross but it is the only way to obtain the

freedom we desire. As we enter into the second half of Lent let us bring our sins to the cross and not be condemned but prepare for newness of life.

This Thursday, March 19th is the Feast Day of St. Joseph, Husband of Mary, and we will have a special Mass at 7:00 pm in the Church in lieu of the 5:30 pm Mass. As part of this Mass we are having a special canned food drive since it is traditional to have a special offering for the poor on the feast day of St. Joseph. Confessions will be heard from 5:00 to 6:30 PM on March 19th. This weekend we are promoting a new ministry for married couples called Teams of Our Lady. I invite any interested married couples to consider signing up for this new ministry that will meet once a month in couple's homes. Fr. Charlie

Sanctuary Candle

A Sanctuary Candle burns in the Church and the Chapel to indicate the presence of our Lord. The candle burns for 14 days and then is replaced by a new candle. If you would like to donate a candle in memory of a loved one or as a thanksgiving offering (“on the occasion of…”In honor of…,”) please contact the parish office. The name(s) or occasion will be listed in the Sunday bulletin. We ask for a $15 donation.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul In today’s Gospel, God demonstrates great love for us by sending his Son so that we may believe in him. We demonstrate our great love for God by doing good works: reaching out to others, acting in justice and charity. Through your almsgiving you are performing a good work; far greater than you think. Know that every nickel, dime, quarter or dollar you give is multiplied by the coins others place in the SVdP blue bag collection.

Thank you for your generous donations to SVdP and for “sending” our Vincentians as the hands, feet, and heart of St. Martin de Porres so the needy will believe and have hope in a Christ who loves them and provides. We are happy to see more and more food being placed in the SVdP wooden box in the church. God bless you for your good deeds!

Our next SVdP meeting will be Tuesday, March 24th @ 7:00 pm in the Education Center. Anyone interested in this ministry is always welcome to attend to learn more.

From the Austin Sidewalks

Gwen & Leroy Churchill were praying during the 40 Days for Life Vigil last Monday. As a car approached, Gwen, a trained sidewalk counselor, motioned for them to come speak with her. Two young women parked the car, got out and walked over to Gwen and Leroy. Gwen shared with them the loving options offered at a close by pregnancy resource center. The women, with tears in their eyes hugged them, thanked them for being there and told them they would go to the pregnancy resource center. Leroy told them how brave they were for coming to speak with them. After they drove away, all of the volunteers offered a Rosary for this young woman that she continue to find Christians in her path. Grateful Families! Thank you, parishioners, for your many donations that have helped keep our Pregnancy Resource Centers supplied and for the 34 St. Martin de Porres' parishioners who are covering the moms, dads, families, abortion workers and doctors in prayer this Lent through our 40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil.

Wednesday, March 25, Relevant Radio will honor Alan Graham, President and founding member of Mobile Loaves & Fishes as the first Austin recipient of the Christ Brings Hope Award. This is an annual award presented by Relevant Radio to an American Catholic who has worked with extraordinary dedication to bring the good news and hope of Christ to all souls. This person exemplifies the virtues of charity, generosity, hope, apostolic zeal, and love for the Truth.
