CLERGY CORNER

Ex 17:8-13; 2Tim 3:14-4:2; Lk 18: 1-8) -

Not so long ago, we had the Olympics. I was so impressed to see the enthusiasm, the determination, the stamina on these athletes competing with one goal in mind: to win. To achieve this, even just to compete, doesn’t require physical fitness only but all of a person’s determination. These young men and women had their own setbacks and gratifications, struggles and achievements, frustration and encouragement, personal trials and endurance. I believe that as Christians we’ve gone through the same moments either when we’ve struggled with our faith or when we’ve felt the Lord’s healing. At the Olympics these heroes had been working hard for a long time. The one thing in common among them was: Persistence. It’s not an easy task to persevere. In today’s readings, we hear the same: Persistence. Whether it’s Moses who kept his hands up praying so God saves his people from the enemy or in St. Paul to Timotheus encouraging to be persistent at all times, or the relentless widow in the parable who kept coming to the judge crying out for justice. But also, I want to point out another kind of persistence that is very subtle – the indolence depicted by the judge who neither feared God nor respected human life. Precisely, the same kind of persistence shown today by “liberal judges or progressive people” who act in defiance to God under the so fake called social justice and human rights. For Christians persistence is never to give up in our faith. It’s to hold fast and refuse to grow weary. It’s to live according to the Gospel. St. Paul got it right: “Man must

remain faithful to the Lord; to what we’ve learned and

believed so that one who belongs to God may be competent,

equipped for every good work.” Our journey on earth is an Olympiad. We must persist in the Lord and go for the gold. All are invited but we must endure and hold fast. What’s the best training program to achieve this? Jesus said: it is necessary to pray always without becoming weary – not to

lose heart. We lose heart in prayer because we can easily get disturbed. Even the disciples couldn’t pray for an hour. The devil always tries to take us away from God by distracting us. One way to pursue a rich and rewarding life of prayer is by devoting a time in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, talking to the Lord in silence. And so the Lord will give us a more resilient and generous heart not so much physically — but spiritually. A strong heart that can withstand discouragement, endure disappointment and prayers that seem to go unanswered, and hardships that sometimes can be difficult to bear. That heart won’t stop if it’s full of faith. And so it will return to God, again and again, in gratitude and in hope, persistent in prayer. Prayer is about transformation and it all begins in the heart. We need to remain firm in the faith as faith and prayer go hand in hand. St. Augustine said: “Faith causes

prayer to grow, and when prayer grows our faith is

strengthened” (Sermon, 115). Yours in Christ, Deacon Mauricio O. Rivas

SOCIAL CONCERNS

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY -- In the Gospel today Jesus tells his disciples to pray always without becoming weary. Indeed our prayer must always be an expression of our love for God, our family, our world, and especially for the suffering

poor. As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul envelope, please say a special prayer for the poor who have no one to pray for them. THE PANTRY – With your help, we provided food to 211 families in the week ending 3 October. Thank you for all your help to your neighbors in need! Distribution categories in chronic short supply: Similac baby formula (blue label), baby food #1, and disposable diapers numbers 4, 5 and 6. Also in short supply: EVERYTHING (as usual for early Fall!) All of the following are needed for our regular food distribution: canned soup, pasta sauce, pasta, canned vegetables, canned tuna, canned beans, boxed macaroni & cheese, dried potatoes, dried rice, dried beans, canned fruit, dried soup/ramen, unsweetened breakfast cereal, peanut butter & jelly, cookies and crackers, powdered milk, potatoes, apples, oranges, personal hygiene products and paper products, Numbers 1 and 2 baby food, and baby formula (please, no larger than one pound package to facilitate distribution), and disposable diapers especially sizes 4, 5 and 6. The list above gives items we need for the weekly food distribution. Donations at times include a much wider variety of items, however. Please note items which we do not distribute: non-commercial packaged or home-canned items (unless the source is well known to us); dented cans; opened items; alcoholic beverages; prescription or over-the-counter medicines; “non-perishable” food past its expiration date (although we can pass on not-too-far expired items to other programs that can use them); Insect sprays

Page 5: St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church - Fata Online · Cesar Mendivil, Mai-Ahi, Kathryn Boycheck, Carol Breneman, Maria Corazon Hamoy, Christian Cohen, Cesar Ricardo, Cynthia Francisconi,

and poisons, Pet food – any turning up in our distribution is passed on to the Humane Society or animal rescue organizations; and candy, as the basic goal of the program is nutrition (except for items appropriate for clients’ young children present at the distribution). Please do not leave food donations outside St. Martin’s Church, Parish Office or Pantry (Annex) Building. The Pantry needs adult volunteers! -- Working inside the Pantry Friday, Sunday and Monday requires clearance through the Archdiocesan Virtus (child protection) Program. Have you completed the clearance for another

program? Let St. Martin’s Parish Virtus coordinator at

[email protected] know that you wish to work in the

Pantry, and info [email protected].

-- HAVE YOU COMPLETED WORK FOR A VIRTUS CLEARANCE TO WORK AT THE PANTRY? We’ve noticed an occasional problem in the current system: the applicant is NOT necessarily notified of a completed clearance. On occasion, even an identification card will turn up at the Pantry with no contact information or indication of the service for which the clearance was requested. Please contact Chuck Smith at [email protected] to confirm your clearance status!
