Members learn how to save a lifeBy Sherrie Algren55 members of St. Martins are now certified by the
American Heart Association in CPR, First Aid and
the use of an AED
(Automated External
Defibrillator).
Statistics show an AED,
along with CPR, greatly
improves the odds of
surviving a cardiac ar-
rest (from less than 5%
to almost 74%). Our
church recently pur-
chased an AED and put
together a committee
to oversee training and
use of the device.
Sherrie Algren is a registered nurse and serve
on the new committee. She led the 4-hour tra
ing sessions during four days in August. With
leadership, members
learned how to identify
signs of a heart attack a
other emergency event
and initial actions in tre
ing serious and minor
health problems. Kudo

Oh God, make speed to save us.
P A G E 3S T M A R T I N S C H U R C H . O R G
we pray to-
gether in the
days ahead.
When disaster
strikes, in any
form, we may
be knocked
back on our
heels or even
completely off
our feet. But then, and with Gods
help there is always a but then,
we find that the church communityaround us and the Holy Spirit find
their way into our troubles. We
recognized the resurrected One
through the hospital visits, the cas-
seroles brought over, and the cards
that remind us that no tragedy can
separate us from the love of Christ.
The Twin Towers went down that
day and we mourn the loss of life
and the many, many lives that
would never be the same again. It is
good for us to remember 9/11 with
that iconic image of the cross that
stood in the midst of the rubble. It
is also important for us to pray for
our enemies, (see BCP pg. 816), and
for the continuing restoration of all
of Gods creation. We do move
forward. We act out of faith not
when we come to some kind of
totally clear understanding of the
situation, but in the very midst of
lifes rubble. We see God in the
closeness of others and the acts of
kindness from people we dont
even know. We meet others at the
foot of the cross.
Across the street from the Twin
Towers memorial is little St. Pauls
Episcopal Church. It was miracu-
lously spared in the falling debris.
This is the same house of worship
that served communion to George
Washington and our countrys
founding leaders. The real power of
who America is was never housed
in buildings of commerce and busi-
ness. The real power was in the
faith that predated the 9/11 attack
and can be seen today at St. Pauls
in the thousands of prayers posted
inside the chapel walls or in the
deep scratch marks on the pews
where the firefighters and EMTs laid
down their oxygen tanks to re-
group and press on.
As we remember 9/11, where we
were and how it changed us, may
we pray that whenever we get that
sinking feeling of despair, our focus
would shift to the cross of Christ
and our strength would be in the
One who saves us everyday.
Blessings,
Fr. Jon
Times of crises are a
part of life. Unfortu-
nately nothing makes us
feel more alone thanbeing in crises. Our souls
experience unrest and it
can seem as if we will
never get a break from
the stress. In the midst
of such trying times it is
especially difficult to hear and see
that Gods presence remains close
by. Like Peter, whose focus shifts
from Jesus, then to himself, and
then back to the Lord, we reach
out and ask God to save us.
This is the tenth year after 9/11. I
remember exactly where I was the
moment the news showed the
premeditated attack on the Twin
Towers. I remember watching in
disbelief and thinking it was just
some kind of terribly odd accident.
Later that morning we set a TV in
the office of the church and people
started coming to the church dur-
ing lunch hour and throughout the
rest of the day for prayer and con-
solation. Prayers were circulated
from the national church office and
through helpful resources like For-
ward Movements Day By Day. Theeditor of this devotional booklet
responded to the 9/11 tragedy this
way: One thing we know: God
will not leave us comfortless. The
strength of such comfort is espe-
cially available through the unity
and common life we are given as

Its time to make music!
Fall is upon us and it is time to get choirs
started. There are two opportunities for you
as September arrives:
The Sanctuary Choirrehearses at 7 p.m. on
Thursday nights, beginning September 1, and
will sing at the 10:15 service beginning Septem-
ber 11. All are invited to join. If you havent
sung with the choir (or any choir) for a while,
consider coming out and joining us.
Tintinnabulation, our bell choir, meets on
Wednesday nights at 6:30 beginning September
7. If you have some musical ability but are not
a singer (or would like to double dip and be in
two ensembles) we would like to have you join
us. Dont worry; we have a bell for you!
I am certain there are others of you in the con-
gregation who play musical instruments. Please
make yourself known to me. The more people
we can have involved in the music program the
better. The choirs and instrumentalists in any
church are some of the most dedicated and giv-
ing people there are. These people enrich our
worship weekly, helping all of us to offer up our
sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to God
(Book of Common Prayer, p. 342). I give thanks
for all of you who have participated in the past,
and I look forward to working and worshipping
with you in the future.

Where are you staying?By Heidi Gioia,
Youth Ministries Director
In the first chapter of John, two disci-
ples follow Jesus. He asked them,
What are you looking for? They said,
Rabbi, where are you staying? Come
and see, he replied. So they went and
saw where he was staying, and spent
the rest of the day with him. (John
1:35-39)
A ministry of presence, thats what
Jesus offers these disciples. What
did they mean by where do you
stay? I think they were curious,
trying to figure out what made
Jesus tick. They wanted to see first
-hand who this Lamb of God was.
An image of our senior high room
flashes when I think about this
story. I can picture Jesus and these
unnamed disciples watching a
movie, playing a game of Apples
munity to invite. But here, perhaps,
maybe the roles can reverse a bit
and we adults can ask the question,
Where do you stay? We can en-
ter in to the worlds of teens and
see what makes them tick. Then, we
can be a centering voice to reflect
on how God works through their
life experiences, joys and frustra-
tions.
A ministry of presence, thats the
core of our mission in Youth Minis-
tries this year.
To Apples and talking just like we
do. I imagine how this ministry of
presence transforms these disciples
faith and their relationship with God.
Just like the disciples, our youth are
curious. They too want to experi-
ence what their faith is all about.
How does all this stuff we talk about
in church relate to their day-to-day
lives? As such, were called to offer a
place for those conversations and
take the time to listen.
And Jesus reply: Come & see. Jesus
invites them in. Its only two of them,
not an impressive crowd. Jesus does-
nt wait until he reaches critical
mass. He ministers to who is pre-
sent now. How instructive. Like-
wise, our youth leaders have made
the commitment to be present.
Just like Jesus, were called as a com-

Legacy Giving: In my own words...
By Ashleigh Kellogg, Finance Committee Member
Okay, lets be honest. Who of us has placed
two envelopes into the collection plate at
once? Three envelopes? What if you could
feel confident that St. Martins is receiving
your gift of treasure even when youre unable
to give your gift of time? Perhaps you are a
snow bird or maybe you work Sunday
mornings. Then electronic giving may be for
you!
You may have heard of the swipe-fee reform
that recently took effect limiting the amount
of income banks receive from retailers ac-
cepting their debit cards. Unfortunately, the
banks will still find ways to make money. Is St.
Martins the only check you write? Do you
have to pay for your checks or are you
charged a fee for each check you write? With
electronic giving, your pledge is automatically
withdrawn from your personal bank accountand transferred directly to St. Martins oper-
ating account. So easy!
Your finance committee is currently working
to evaluate how implementing electronic giv-
ing will benefit St. Martins and its parishion-
ers. Be on the look-out for more information
in the fall regarding this E-citing program!
E-giving is E-citing!
By Murrell Cunningham
July 10th and 17th Father Jons
sermons described the meaning
of the order of Episcopal Wor-
ship. His second sermon dealt
with the last part of worship
which is Holy Communion,
which he noted begins with the
offertory just after the passing of
the peace. This caught my at-
tention since I am involved with
the Stewardship Committee and
the Legacy Committee, but even
more because I am Christian. As
a matter of fact, I find it thrilling
that giving opens the door in
our worship from the reading
and preaching of the Word to
the celebration of Holy Com-
munion. It gives us direct access
to participate in the Holy Eucha-
rist with our tithes and offerings.
In the Book of Common Prayer
there is an offertory sentence
and a bidding which have great
meaning for
me personally:
But do not
neglect to do
good and to
share what
you have, for
such sacrifices
are pleasing to
God,
Hebrews 13;15,16 BCP 367.
Let us with gladness present
the offerings and oblations of
our life and labors to the
Lord. (BCP 367)
This reminds me that there are
so many ways we can share
what we have when we pause to
remember that everything we
have is from God. It is our love
for God, Jesus, and the Holy
Spirit that enables us to search
for ways to do good, to share
what we have
been given
and to makesacrifices that
are pleasing
to God.
There are so
many ways
we can give
to God and
His Church. Time, talent, money,
service to others, volunteer work
the list is endless. Have you
considered giving to St. Martins
Legacy Fund? Have you remem-
bered St. Martins in your will or
estate plans? Only God knows
what new ministries may lie in
store for future generations be-
cause our generation cared
enough to give!
Murrell shares a smile at a recent church
event with Abbey.

Mystics and their teachingsBy The Rev. Emily Hillquist Davis
Whats a mystic?
One definition: A mystic is a person with a hunger for experiencing God im-mediately (with no mediation, nothing in the
way, nothing between God and your soul, the core of your being.) This is the experience out of which Peter knows aboutJesus, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. (Matthew 16:16)
Mystics say things like:
And:
And:
I hope these feed your mind and soul, as they do mine.

Its a risky thing to pray, and the danger is that our very prayers get between God and us. The great thing in prayer is not to
pray, but to go directly to God. If saying your prayers is an obstacle to prayer, cut it out. The best way to pray is: stop. Let prayer
pray within you, whether you know it or not. This means a deep awareness of our true inner identity. It implies a life of faith, but
also of doubt.
- Thomas Merton (1915-1968) in Monastic Studies (Mount Saviour Monastery, Pine City, NY: 1969)
God enters into you with all that is his, as far as you have stripped yourself of yourself in all things. It is here that you should be-
gin, whatever the cost, for it is here that you will find true peace, and nowhere else.
- Meister Eckhart (ca.1260-1329), Talks of Instruction
We awaken in Christs body as Christ awakens our bodies,
() For if we genuinely love Him, we wake up inside Christs body
Where all our body, all over, every most hidden part of it,
is realized in joy as Him, and He makes us, utterly, real,
and everything that is hurt, everything that seemed to us dark, harsh, shameful,
maimed, ugly, irreparably damaged, is in Him transformed
and recognized as whole, as lovely, and radiant in his light
he awakes as the Beloved in every last part of our body.

Please dont miss the fun at Episcopal
City Missions gala event. Moment in Time
will be held on Thursday, September 29
at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Clayton.
The cocktail reception and dancing to
The Just in Time Ensemble begins at 6
p.m. This year our featured speaker is
The Rev. Dietra L. Wise, ECM chap-
lain. We are also honoring The Rev.
Susan C. Skinner for her years of work
on behalf of ECM. Please call the ECMoffice at 314-436-3545 if you would like
to reserve a space. The tickets are $125
per person. We look forward to seeing
you on September 29.
Episcopal City Mission provides chaplain
services to children in detention through-
out the St. Louis area.
About the speaker:
For the past six years, Rev. Dietra L.
Wise has served the children in detention
as chaplain at St. Louis County Detention
Center and Lakeside Residential Treat-
ment Center. She organizes ECMs quar-
terly hip-hop chapel services, leads a com-
munity service program at Lakeside and
offers activities which engage youth in the
areas of faith, media and culture. Dietra is
an ordained minister in the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ). The Rev.Wise is currently pursuing her Doctorate
of Ministry Degree in Preaching at Aqui-
nas Institute of Theology. Dietra is planter
and pastor of Liberation Christian Church
(DOC) located in University City. The
Rev. Wise was recognized as an out-
standing Young Leader by the St. Louis
American Foundation in March 2011.
About the honoree:
The Rev. Susan C. Skinner was Executive
Director of ECM from 2002 to 2006.
During this time, Susie worked tirelessly
in the community to raise the awareness
of the work of the ECM chaplains. The
Rockwell Society, Summer Solstice, and
Moment in Time were organized during
her tenure at ECM. The Rev. Skinner was
ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1981
and has served the Diocese in many ca-
pacities, including rector at EmmanuelEpiscopal Church and as the interim rec-
tor at St. Matthews, St. Martins and the
Church of the Good Shepherd. The Rev.
Skinner and her late husband, The Rev.
Robert Skinner, have a son, Robert, Jr.,
daughter-in-law Sarah, and two grandchil-
dren.
