NEW CATHEDRAL RECTOR NAMED As was announced at all the Masses last weekend, Bishop Boyea has appointed Fr. Karl Pung as the next Rector of the Cathedral. The appointment is to take place on Wednesday, June 28, 2017. Fr. Pung is currently serving as the Pastor of St. Patrick Parish, Brighton, MI. More information on the transition will be included in future bulletins.
SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT The word “behold” is used twice in today’s Gospel ac-count of the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mt. Tabor. This scene is recounted every Lenten season on the Second Sun-day. Sr. Mary McGlone in her article for Preaching Resources believes the word means more than “Look!” or the more current expression, “OMG!” She believes it’s more like, “Take a very good look, and then look again, because there is more here than you can grasp.” I didn’t read more of her article but remembered another resource and so I went there to look up another’s descrip-tion of this epiphany/revelation event. This is what I found that made me appreciate “Behold!” “The transfiguration scene serves as ‘a twin of sorts’ to the execution narrative in Mt. 27:32-54. Davies and Allison beautifully note the parallels. ‘In the one, a private epipha-ny, an exalted Jesus, with garments glistening, stands on a high mountain and is flanked by two religious giants from the past. All is light. In the other, a public spectacle, a hu-miliated Jesus, whose clothes have been torn from him and divided, is lifted upon a cross and flanked by two common criminals. All is darkness. We have here a pictorial anti-thetical parallelism, a diptych in which the two plates have similar lines but different colors.’ The parallel scenes high-light the horror of Good Friday and the splendor of Jesus’ love for us. It is no ordinary man that will be crucified on Calvary, but the beloved Son of God revealed in glory at the transfiguration. This same glorified Son will freely sub-mit himself to utter humiliation in order to redeem the hu-man family.” (Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture: The Gospel of Matthew by Curtis Mitch and Edward Sri, pp 218-219.)
Behold! Indeed. Take a very good look, then look again, because there is more here than you can grasp.
