19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“At times, we imagine that the Lord is hidden from us or is absent from our lives, especially when we need him the most. The reality is, in fact, that we are the ones who fail to recognize him. The Lord is always in our midst. In today’s first reading, the prophet Elijah waits for the passing of the Lord, but the Lord is neither in the noises around him, or in the fire; rather, the Lord passes through the gentle breeze. In the Gospel reading, when the apostles see Jesus walking on the water, they at first confuse him for a ghost. When Peter goes to insure that he is, indeed, the Lord, Jesus invites Peter to join him on the water, but Peter begins to sink out of fear, and Jesus saves him.

“In our own lives, we have similar experiences. Surrounded by shadows that confuse us on our journey, we sometimes fail to recognize that Jesus is always at our side. But once we realize that the Lord is present in the compassionate voice of a friend, family member, priest, or lay minister, we are able to turn our hearts toward him, and thank him for his help in difficult times. Is it true that we sometimes fail to recognize Christ Jesus in others? Can we point out some of the reasons why this might be true?”

Décimo Noveno Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario “A veces nos imaginamos que el Señor se esconde de nosotros o está ausente de nuestras vidas, sobre todo cuando más necsitamos de su ayuda. En realidad, somos nosotros los que no lo reconocemos; Él siempre está cerca de nosotros. Elías esperaba el paso del Señor; no fue en el ruido ni en el fuego sino en la brisa donde lo puedo reconocer (primera lectura). Los apóstoles, desde la barca, confundieron a Jesús, que caminaba sobre las aguas del mar, como un fantasma. Pedro quiso asegurarse de que era el Señor, y Jesús los invitó a que caminara sobre el mar, pero Pedro, por el miedo y la falta de fe, se hundía, y Jesús le tuvo que dar la mano.

“A nosotros nos pasa lo mismo. Al no reconocer que el Señor está siempre a nuestro lado, nos atemorizan las tormentas de la vida. Una vez que reconocemos al Señor en la voz compasiva de una familiar o de un amigo, de un sacerdote o de otro ministro laico de la comunidad, nos dirigimos a Él en la oración y podemos agradecerle la ‘mano’ que nos ha brindado en medio de tantas dificultades. ¿Es cierto que, a veces, no reconocemos al Señor Jesús, a quien celebramos a diario en nuestra vida de oración, y por quien servimos a los más necesitados de nuestro mundo? Si nuestra respuesta es afirmativa, ¿podemos enumerar algunas razones?

“My loving and creative mother, Peg Lentz, commissioned me to make woven banners for the altar at her church, St. Mary, in Aurora, Illinois. She requested that I use the bright colors representing all of the different parishioners woven together into a representation of the St. Mary community. Upon visiting the church, I was inspired by the rose window above the altar. So I dyed cotton yarn to match, and I wove the ‘weft’ to mimic the jagged ‘slices.’ Since Father Tim requested that the banners be different from each other to create more interest, I wove them with varying ‘warps’ and lengths. It’s my hope that these banners add light, color, and beauty to an already beautiful church, and that the parishioners enjoy them. Thank you so much to Peg and Tom Lentz and Fr. Tim for allowing me to be a part of this special project. It was a joy!”

BANDERAS TEJIDAS PARA EL ALTAR

Mi amada y creativa madre, Peg Lentz, me encargó hacer banderas tejidas para el altar de su parroquia de Santa María, en Aurora, Illinois. Ella me pidió que utilizara colores brillantes para representar a los distintos miembros de la parroquia tejidos en una representación de la comunidad de Santa María. Luego de visitar la parriquia, me inspiró la ventana en forma de rosa que está arriba del altar. Está hecha de pedazos geométricos de tonos de joyas. Quiero que las banderas parezcan ventanales tejidos. Teñi hilos de lana con colores similares a los de la ventana, y los tejí de manera similar a los pedazos que forman la ventana. Como el Padre Tim me pidió que las banderas fueran diferentes una de la otra para hacerlas más interesantes, las teji con diseños y dimensiones distintas. Deseo que estas banderas añadan luz, color, y belleza a una iglesia que ya es hermosa, y que los miembros de la parroquia las pueden disfrutar. CITIZENSHIP CLASSES

Citizenship classes start on September 11th at St. Mary Parish Center, 432 E. Downer Place, Aurora. The classes will help you prepare and pass your citizenship test and interview. Classes are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Thursdays mornings from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The class is free. A $10 donation is requested for study materials.

CLASES DE CIUIDADANIA Clases de Ciudadania empiezan el 11 de septiembre en el Centro Parroquial de la Iglesia de Santa Matía en el 432 E. Downer Place, Aurora. Las clases te ayudaran a prepararte para pasar tu examen de ciudadania y la entrevista.
