FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 28, 2018

From the Pastor:Dear Friends in Christ,This Sunday is the beginning of Catholic Schools Week. This year’s motto sums up what makes Catholic schools such a great option for children and families: “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” In 2016, SAT Subject Tests scores showed that religiously affiliated schools, which include Catholic schools, scored significantly higher than the national mean for public schools on the new version of the SAT. Religiously affiliated students had a mean score of 532 in math, 537 in reading and 525 in writing compared to the public school mean score of 487 in math, 494 in reading and 472 in writing. The national mean score is 494 for math, 508 for reading and 482 for writing. Research has also proven that:Graduates of Catholic high schools are more likely to vote than public school graduates (Dee, 2005)Graduates of Catholic schools are likely to earn higher wages than public school graduates (Hoxby, 1994; Neal, 1997).Catholic schools tend to produce graduates who are more civically engaged, more tolerant for diverse views, and more committed to service as adults (Campbell, 2001; Greeley & Rossi, 1966; Greene, 1998; Wolf, Greene, Kleitz, & Thalhammer, 2001).All of these factors are important, of course, but we don’t need statistical studies to tell us that Catholic schools will always do better than non-religious schools in teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, teaching children how to pray, and encouraging students and their teachers to pray together. Our parish grade school educates children in Kindergarten through grade 8. Financial aid is available for all families who qualify. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend our school’s Open House this Sunday after the 11:00 a.m. Mass.

Sincerely Yours, in Christ,Fr. Thomas Buffer
