St. Mary Catholic Parish – December 1, 2013
Communal Penance Service Wednesday, December 4th at 7pm at St. Mary Immaculate Conception This is NOT A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION. Christmas Eve Masses 4pm, 6:30pm (Children’s Choir), 11:15pm Christmas Carols begin for the 12 Midnight Mass Christmas Day 10am. There will be NO Masses December 26-27 Adoration We will repose on Monday, December 23rd at 5pm & resume on Sunday, December 29th after 11:30am. The Parish Office will be closed December 24-27th. New Year’s Eve 5pm Vigil. New Year’s Day 10am There will be NO Masses January 2-3rd. There will be NO interruption to the Adoration Schedule for New Year. The Parish Office will be closed December 31st – January 3rd.

RING THE BELL CAMPAIGN During this season of Thanksgiving, we give special thanks for the faithful support and commitment of parishioners to our parish. We are grateful for the many blessings we have in our parish; for parishioners who actively support our efforts; for parents committed to their children’s formation; and for teachers whose dedication make our mission a reality. Thank you and God bless. We continue to need your support for the financial stability of our Parish. Please return your pledge card whether you are pledging over a period of time, or a zero pledge. If you have not returned your pledge card you will be contacted, so please return even if you cannot pledge at this time. We as a faith community are praying that every parish family will make a pledge, committing to help us to reach our goal. Please take this to prayer; we are counting on your faithful support. Payments can be made annually, quarterly, monthly, weekly or a one-time donation. Payments can begin now or at a date that is convenient for you. “Be generous, sharing what you have.” (1 Timothy 6:18)

Tips for Christmas and Year-End Giving: Many people enjoy using this as a special time to give to their favorite charity or non-profit organization. Year-end gifts can provide many advantages to you, the donor and the receiving organization. St. Mary’s Ring the Bell Campaign and St. Mary Catholic Parish invite you to remember us in your gift giving this year.
Calculate Your Income. Try to get a handle on your tax liability for the year. Did your unearned income increase? Did you sell any appreciated assets: will you owe more taxes? This alone may motivate you to increase your giving before December 31st. In fact you may even want to move some of next year’s giving to this current year in order to create a larger income tax deduction for this year. Non-itemizers may especially find this “grouping of gifts” useful to take possible advantage of an itemized tax return every other year. In any case, by the time you fill out your income tax return in early 2014, it will be too late to make charitable gifts for 2013 tax year. Take the time to do some planning now while you still have an opportunity to make a year-end gift.
Do Your Giving Early. This is especially true if you want to make a gift of non-cash assets (Securities, real estate, etc.). It also applies to life-income gifts (Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts, etc.). Some gift transactions will take more time to finalize than others, so we recommend that you complete your gift sooner rather than later.
Talk to Your Advisor. Before making any significant gift, you should have your attorney, CPA or other advisor help you understand the impact of your gift on your income tax return or estate. The Church wants your giving to be not only generous and joyful, but also as beneficial as possible to you. Donations must be received or postmarked by December 31st to be eligible for your 2013 taxes. Please note that the parish office will be closed on December 31st.

ALTAR SERVERS, LECTORS / GREETERS,
& EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS The new schedule that starts on December 7-8, 2013, is
now available for pick-up and online. This 16 week schedule
includes three sign-up opportunities for Christmas, the
Holiday Weekend between Christmas and New Year's, and
New Year's.
Greeters / Altar Servers / Lectors please pick up a copy of
the schedule so you can put the dates you are scheduled to
serve on your home calendars. Greeters, Altar Servers, and
Lectors need to sign in prior to each Mass in the Lay Minister
Notebook in Meeting Room A both when you are scheduled
to serve and when you are covering for someone else.
Eucharistic Ministers are self-scheduling by sign-up and
so do not need to pick up a schedule. There are 3 ways to
sign up to be a Eucharistic Minister - please see page 5 of the
Bulletin. Eucharistic Ministers do need to sign in prior to
each Mass in the Lay Minister Notebook in Meeting Room A
so that we know that we have the number needed before each
Mass. PLEASE don't wait to be asked - come to Meeting
Room A when you arrive and VOLUNTEER.
GREETERS URGENTLY NEEDED If you have the gift of hospitality and a warm smile, St.
Mary's NEEDS YOU! All 3 Mass times are in need of folks
to welcome people as they come into the gathering space
before Mass. This is an important Lay Ministry, it welcomes
each person into our worship community and lets them know
that their presence and participation enriches our communal
worship for us all.
There is no training and no age restriction to becoming a
Greeter. The total commitment is that once a month you
come 20 minutes before the Mass time and welcome folks as
they enter. This is a great ministry for families to do
together, as well as single and married adults. Please call the
Parish Office to let them know your willingness to serve. I
will be able to add new Greeters to the current Lay Minister
schedule and so will contact you about dates.

SPELLING BEE CONTEST WINNERS The Knights of Columbus recently sponsored a spelling
bee at St. Mary School and would like to announce the
winners. First Place winner for grades 4-6 was Brendan
Schultz age 10. First place winner for grades 7-8 was
Meghan Schultz age 12. These children will receive a gift
certificate from Barnes & Noble bookstore and will advance
to the Diocesan finals March 2, 2014, in Mason. Runners up
in grades 4-6 Kendall Bonifer, Stephen McGlade and Paige
Wise. Runners up in grades 7-8 were Markus Brown, Lauren
Sullivan and Joshua Cross. Congratulations & thank you to
all who participated.

now offering a three-credit Introduction to Sacred
Scripture course this winter on-site at St. John the Baptist
in Ypsilanit, MI! The course will be held Thursday evenings
from 6:30 – 9:30 pm from January 9 through April 14, 2014.

In the Silence, God Speaks
“For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from God.” Psalm 62:5)
To make possible true inner silence, practice:
Silence of the eyes, by seeking always the beauty and goodness of God everywhere, and closing them to the faults of others and to all that is sinful and disturbing to the soul.
Silence of the ears, by listening always to God’s voice and to the cry of the poor and the needy, and closing them to all other voices that come from fallen human nature, such as gossip, tale bearing, and uncharitable words.
Silence of the tongue, by praising God and speaking the life-giving Word of God that is the truth, that enlightens and inspires, brings peace, hope, and joy; and by refraining from self-defense and every word that causes darkness, turmoil, pain, and death.
Silence of the mind, by opening it to the truth and knowledge of God in prayer and contemplation, like Mary who pondered the marvels of the Lord in her heart, and by closing it to all untruths, distractions, destructive thoughts, rash judgments, false suspicions of others, vengeful thoughts, and desires. Silence of the heart, by loving God with our heart, soul, mind, and strength; loving one another as God loves; and avoiding all selfishness, hatred, envy, jealousy, and greed. For in the silence and purity of the heart God speaks.
