dedicated to the Mother of God
Tuesday August 6 THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD ndash celebrated by 5th century East Syrians this feast was inserted into the general calendar in 1457 by Pope Callistus III to celebrate the defeat announced in Rome on 6
August of the Turks at Belgrade (6 August occurs forty days before the feast of the Triumph of the Cross 14
September)
Wednesday August 7 Saint Sixtus II and Saint Cajetan
Saint Sixtus II Pope and Companions Martyrs ndash Sixtus II and four deacons (Januarius Vincent Magnus and Stephen) were arrested in 258 while celebrating the Eucharist in the cemetery of Callistus by order of Valerian
they were decapitated that same day Sixtus named in Roman Canon

Friday August 9 Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross Virgin Martyr ndash Edith Stein was born in Breslau Germany (now Wroclaw Poland) in 1891 of Jewish parents She studied philosophy under Husserl the leading
phenomenologist of his day Inspired by the writings of St Teresa of Avila she was baptized 1 January 1922 She
taught in various schools from 1923 to 1933 until forced to resign due to anti-Semitic legislation In 1933 she
entered the Discalced Carmelite convent in Cologne where she received the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
At the end of 1939 she moved to the convent at Echt Holland on account of the Nazi persecution of Jews but in
1942 during the German occupation of Holland she was arrested transported to Poland and killed (9 August) at
the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz Her writings includeFinite and Eternal Being An Attempt to an Ascent
to the Meaning of Being Philosophy of Psychology and the Humanities and The Science of the Cross Along with

Friday August 9 Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross Virgin Martyr ndash Edith Stein was born in Breslau Germany (now Wroclaw Poland) in 1891 of Jewish parents She studied philosophy under Husserl the leading
phenomenologist of his day Inspired by the writings of St Teresa of Avila she was baptized 1 January 1922 She
taught in various schools from 1923 to 1933 until forced to resign due to anti-Semitic legislation In 1933 she
entered the Discalced Carmelite convent in Cologne where she received the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
At the end of 1939 she moved to the convent at Echt Holland on account of the Nazi persecution of Jews but in

every Wednesday morning
Thanks to your generous donation
we are able to provide a meal as
well as providing food supplies
to 40-80 families per week
We purchase the food supplies
form East Texas Food Bank at a
cost of $500-$1000 per week
Volunteers and donations are
always needed
and very much
appreciated
