Weekly Message

Word of Life

“An old Irish proverb says, ‘It is in the shelter of each other that the people live.’ Indeed, we are created to depend upon

one another and walk together in suffering.”

-Caring for Loved Ones at Life’s End USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, 2016-17 Respect Life Program P. 2

In John’s gospel, the miracles of Jesus

were performed to reveal the glory of

God to the people so that they might

come to faith. That was why Jesus

opened the eyes of the man born blind in

last week’s gospel. Jesus stressed the

same point in the gospel today when He

raised Lazarus from the dead. After

receiving the news that Lazarus was

critically ill, Jesus decided to wait two more days before

He went to visit the family. He told the disciples: “This

illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God.”

This approach to the miracles of Jesus is different from

the other synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke

where Jesus performs miracles out of compassion for the

people. This is not to say that the approach of John

contradicts that of the other gospel writers. In fact, the

glory and/or the power of God are manifested in his

compassion and love for people.

Today, Jesus wept at the grave of Lazarus his friend. He

loved Lazarus so much, and also loved the two sisters,

Mary and Martha. Jesus shared in our humanity. He

shared in the sorrows and pains of his friends. I wonder

how many of us have really taken time to think about this.

When we are in pain and sorrow, do we know that Christ

is sharing in our pains? Yes, He does. Knowing He does,

we should be consoled and put our trust in him knowing

that He will do what is best and give us strength to endure

our pains. Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, a sure sign

of God’s power over life and death.

Our gospel reading these past three Sundays have shown

us the different faces of Jesus. In his encounter with the

Samaritan woman, Jesus reveals Himself as “the living

water”. For the man born blind in last week’s reading,

Jesus is “the light of the world”. By raising Lazarus from

the dead in today’s reading, Jesus reveals himself as “the

resurrection and the life”.

Jesus called forth Lazarus from the tomb and he heard the

words of Christ and came out. Yes, hearing the word of

God, the dead lives again. There are times we probably

feel that we are of no use in the community. To some, we

are even as good as dead. This may be or may not be our

fault. However, if we listen for the voice of Christ calling

us forth to a new life, we need to respond like Lazarus and

come out. When Lazarus came out, he was still tied and in

bondage. Jesus commanded the people:

Unbind him, let him go free. It was only then that Lazarus

fully regained his life.

No one can say it is all over except God. Jesus proved to

us today that life and death are in His hands and we have

no right to take other’s life. If He is offering life to people,

Jesus wants us to cooperate with him by letting such

people go free. When we free them, we become free

ourselves. When we free them, many people will believe

that we are truly serving the living God.

Congratulations to our 2017 Confirmation Class who

received the fullness of the Holy Spirit this Saturday April

1st, through the laying on of hands of our Auxiliary Bishop

George Sheltz. With their confirmation, these youth are

now fully initiated in the Catholic faith. They are now

soldiers of Christ! Filled with the Holy Spirit, they are to

share their gifts with the world, the church, and our parish

community. Sometimes young Catholics receive the

sacraments and then stop going to church. They see the

reception of the sacrament as a trophy that they have

earned and they just keep it in a shelf in their homes.

Well, that is not what the church expects of her children.

The sacraments of grace received are to manifest in the

words and actions of the recipient. When the Holy Spirit

descended on the apostles at Pentecost, they were embold-

ened to go out and share Christ with enthusiasm. It is my

hope that our Confirmandi who received the sacrament of

Confirmation on Saturday will become more active in the

church and also share their faith with their peers at school

and everywhere. I invite them to get involved in the youth

programs and ministries in the parish.

Next week is Holy Week beginning with Palm Sunday.

Our parish schedule for the week is included in the

bulletin. Please note that there will be no confessions or

evening Mass on Tuesday, April 11th as the priests will

be attending the Chrism Mass in the Co-Cathedral.

Cardinal DiNardo will celebrate the Chrism Mass with all

the priests of the archdiocese during which he will bless

the holy oils that will be used for the celebration of the

sacraments. The priests will also renew their commitments

to priestly service that day. I ask you to pray for all the

priests working in our archdiocese, particularly for Fr.

Tony and I as we renew our commitments to God and to

you, the people of God.

classes! We will meet this Sunday,

April 2nd at 3:00pm ; Tuesday, April

4th at 6:00pm ; and Wednesday, April

5th at 6:00pm. We are seeing an increase in the

number of sick children being sent to class! Please make sure your child is symptom-free for a full 24

hours - just like school! We don’t want to spread germs to everyone. CCE Registration Dates:

As we wrap up one academic year, it is time to prepare for the

next! We have scheduled three ( 3 ) Formation / CCE registration events for the 2017 - 2018 program year. These

are opportunities to register for both CCE / Formation classes and our Sacramental Preparation programs. The “early”

registration dates are Saturday, April 22nd ; Saturday, May

20th ; and Saturday, June 3rd … all events will be from 2:00pm -

5:00pm in the Family Life Center!

Sacrament Preparation: If your child needs to be re-interviewed (or pass have their book reviewed), please contact the Formation Office to schedule an

appointment ASAP. Students who have not completed the Reconciliation and/ or Eucharist interviews will not be allowed to celebrate First Communion until they do complete the

required evaluations! The Eucharist rehearsal is coming up on

Monday, April 24th at 6:00pm… as usual, we will require both

the parent and student to attend this important event.

2017 Confirmation CLASS:

Congratulations to all our

newly confirmed high school

youth! As we have learned,

Confirmation is a celebration of your

faith… not a graduation! We look forward

to seeing your continued growth in the years to come.

We will notify you when your

Confirmation photo orders arrive. Please

check the Remind test message account for

quick updates.

2018 Confirmation CLASS If you are a baptized high school student (9th, 10th, or 11th

grades) who is not currently participating in the 2017

Confirmation class, you are invited to attend the 2018

Confirmation Orientation Meeting. Parents and students

should plan to attend this important meeting, which will be

held this Friday, April 7, 2017 at 8:00pm in the Church.

We will be reviewing the parish Confirmation guidelines and

calendar dates, plus we will answer any questions you may

have. Please plan to attend this meeting… there is NOT a

make-up!

Want to receive text message reminders about the 2018

Confirmation process — please text @conf2018 to 81010.

AYC 2017: If you are an incoming high school freshman (currently an 8th grader) through to our graduating seniors, you are invited to participate in the Archdiocesan Youth Conference… the largest event we offer locally for high

school youth. It is coming up July 28 - 30 at the Hilton

Americas Hotel downtown; the cost is $190 per person (includes AYC registration, hotel, transportation, and food) until June 2… after June 2, the price goes up to $210. A $50 deposit is due when you turn in the paper-

work… see Carissa for details.

Breaking Open the Word for Families

5th Sunday of Lent

Reading 1: Ezekiel 37:12-14

I will open your graves and have you rise from them. The Lord promises that He will open our graves and put

His spirit in us that we might live and know that He is the

Lord. “I have promised, and I will do it,” says the Lord.

We, who have been dead in sin, will be raised to new life

in Christ Jesus.

Reading 2: Romans 8:8-11

You are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in

you. St. Paul explains that when the Spirit of God dwells

in us, we are dead “to the flesh” – meaning to the

temptations of the world. “The one Who raised Christ

from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also,

through His Spirit dwelling in you.”

Gospel: John 11:1-45

Jesus told her: I am the Resurrection and the Life.

Jesus’ friend Lazarus is ill, and Jesus tells His disciples:

“This illness is not to end in death but is for the glory of

God.” Although Lazarus dies, this is not the end; Jesus, the

Resurrection and the Life, called Lazarus forth – He

opened his grave and had him rise from it – He poured His

Spirit upon his friend. Let us pray in faith that God is

listening, as Jesus prayed then: “Father, I thank you for

hearing me; I know that You always hear me.”

CCE classes will meet today Sun., Apr il 2; Tues., April 4; and Wed., April 5.

CCE Registration Event this month: Saturday, April 22 from 2 to 5 in the Family Life Center.

We offer CCE classes during the school year on

Sundays (3 to 4:30); Tuesdays (6 to 7:30); and Wednesdays

(6 to 7:30). We also offer “Summer Study” daily from June

19 through June 30, which covers one year of lessons in

those two weeks.

Who should come:

(1) Parents wishing to enrich the faith formation of their

children;

(2) Parents whose baptized children over the age of 7 attend

a Catholic school (including St. Mary Magdalene’s school) should register for Sac Prep to prepare for First

Reconciliation and First Eucharist;

(3) Parents wanting to baptize children over the age of 7

should register for CCE (one year) and CCE and RCIA

(second year).

Our faith in art: See what you think of Adoration by

Giuseppe Magni (1869 – 1956). Here we see our Lord as a

chubby, cherubic child seated on the lap of His mother. He

accepts the gift of vivid flowers from adoring, pious

children. We see here in these children the virtues of faith

and charity. Have we done our best to bring our children to

the Lord? Have we fostered in them a love for the Lord?

What flowers (good works, acts of charity) have we given to

the Lord today?

The Sac Prep Eucharist rehearsal is coming up at the end

of this month: Monday, April 24. Children needing Eu-

charist interviews should contact Mike, Ginger, or Carissa at

281-446-8211.

Interested in becoming Catholic? If you are not a baptized Catholic - or a baptized Catholic who needs the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation - we offer “inquiry” classes to learn more about

what the Catholic Church teaches and stands for. Our next

Inquiry classes begin on Tuesday, April 18th at 7:00pm in

McGivney Hall; we start with a short prayer service and then move to Room 216 of the 2-story Education Building until

8:45pm. All are welcome! Please contact Ginger at

(281) 446-2933 with questions.

DIVINE MERCY MESSAGE AND DEVOTION Divine Mercy: A Way of Life

On Good Friday 1937, Jesus requested that St. Faustina make a special Novena before the Feast of Mercy, from Good Friday through the following Saturday. He, Himself, dictated the intentions for each day. He said, “I desire that during these nine days, you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that they may draw from there strength and refreshment and whatever

grace they have need of in the hardships of life, and especially at the hour of death. On each day, you will bring to My heart a different group of souls, and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy…” (Diary,1209). “By this Novena, I will grant every possible grace to souls” (796).

To prepare for the Feast we must also practice the ABCs of Mercy:

Ask for His Mercy (Pray constantly, repent sins, ask for mercy for our-selves and the world.) Be Merciful (Let the mercy received from God flow through us to others.) Completely Trust (The more we trust, the more graces we can receive-no trust, no graces.)

It is not necessary for you to pray the novena in church. We invite the whole community to come and pray with us. However, if you are unable to come, please pray the novena at home wherever

it is convenient. **Free pamphlet on how to pray the Novena available in the back of

the Chapel**

Amaba a

vuelven a vivir. Hay veces que probablemente sentimos que

no tenemos ningún uso en la comunidad. Para algunos, so-
