SCRIPTURE REFLECTION: St. Augustine said, “At the end of the story of the woman accused of adultery there is only misery or mercy left.” If one chooses not to forgive and join the mob in a frenzy to put her to death then misery will come. Violating a sense of fairness and compassion when the heat of the moment disappears and the mob disperses the violation of one’s own sense of fairness in light of one’s own sins will begin to disturb one’s conscience and the image of love in us put there by God will feel violated and we become miserable having betrayed ourselves. Christ spared the crowd their misery by one statement, “let him without sin cast the first stone.” a thought to remember when we are tempted to accuse another and inflict punishment on them.

THE EASTER VIGIL: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

The Easter Vigil is important because it commemorates something God did in the past, and it celebrates something God is doing in our lives today. One of the unique aspects of the Easter Vigil is the recounting of the outstanding deeds of salvation history. These deeds are related in this year’s four readings from the Old Testament, chosen from the law and the prophets, and two readings from the New Testament, namely from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans (arguably the greatest letter ever written) and from the Gospel of Mark. Here’s what we will hear:

Genesis 1:1-2:2 – We hear of God’s creative powers having no temporal limitations. When God speaks it is done. Let there be…and it was!

Exodus 14: 15 -15:1 - The Exodus or “Exit” from Egypt. Pharaoh can no longer endure the plagues that God poured on Egypt and him and allows them to leave. Moses and the Israelites escape by parting the Red Sea.

Isaiah 55: 1-11- Imagery of food and drink is heard at the onset of this reading. The hearers are asked to seek God. The language is powerful and many worship songs use its language.

Ezekiel 36: 16-17a, 18-24 – This is an exciting text. If we listen carefully, we will hear that Ezekiel’s readers are being told that it’s not about them, it’s about God. Perhaps we should consider that the Easter message is not all about us, it is about God and what that God has chosen to do for us. Can we live in that reality?

Romans 6: 3-11 – If we tune in to what the lector is reading, we hear that Paul uses future tense verbs referring to our new life. Paul envisions a future salvation that will include a resurrection from the dead. This hope is the ultimate fulfillment of the claim that as we have died with Christ we will also live with him.

Mark 16: 1-7 – At the empty tomb, Jesus tells the women to go and tell the others of his rising. Are we ready to be that much of an evangelizer?

REFLECTION… by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson She is standing there, shoulders bent in as if to hide herself

from their stares. A woman of the night not wanting the

glaring sunshine of the day to reveal the flaws in her face and

figure. Shiny black hair curly and cascading down her back,

still adorned in part with a jeweled pin. And she is

shivering, despite the dry heat of a Palestinian summer,

out of fear for the awful verdict about to be carried out

on her. Most likely by some of her former “clients,” who

are among the men who have forced her to stand alone as

a crowd watches.

You and I don’t know her name because it isn’t given

to us. But we know her the way we know characters in

famous stories. Her story has been proclaimed in the

gospel for more than two thousand years. Though she

may not be a stand-in for any particular sins that resemble

our own, still she is a symbol of someone needing

understanding and forgiveness. Just a few yards away

from her, that group of scribes and Pharisees, those

perennial perfectionists, are standing with stones ready in

their hands, eager to carry out the demands of the court.

Mosaic justice in this matter was usually swift and cruel.

But these men are immune for now from its penalties,

because the case does not seem to involve them. For

now, they can go on living comfortably with all of their

own secrets. They provide a test case for this young rabbi

Yeshua, who has just finished teaching a sizable group of

His new followers. They too are drawn into the drama as

witnesses.

The “accusers”- a singular title shared with Satan- want

to know what Jesus thinks about this matter. And we pay

attention, because many times in our lives, we have been

that woman, in the sense of being poor unforgiven

sinners. While everyone waits for His word, Jesus decides

not to speak. Instead He bends down to doodle in the

dirt! But when this charged up group of leaders persist,

He finally stands to His full height and makes the famous

declaration: “Let the one among you who is without sin

be the first to throw a stone at her.” Bang! Just like that,

the energy shifts, and the innocence of Jesus combats the

guilt, not of the anonymous woman, but of the

hypocritical men. Slowly but surely, pairs of expensive

sandals start to swivel on the ground, and their owners

slink away.

When the woman was finally left alone with Him, Jesus

says to her what the priest in the confessional may now

and then say to us: “Go and sin no more.” In the latter

instance, we believe that the priest, after all a sinner

himself, is only a proxy for the merciful Savior Jesus

Christ who always judges fairly.

What a perfect story for this late Lenten Sunday on the

threshold of Holy Week! First of all, it is food for

thought. Second, despite being both disturbing and

demanding, it is nevertheless a hopeful and helpful story

that gives us inner peace as we do penance for our past

sins. It is also a story that deserves at least a second

private reading from us this week. Then we can let the

story make its imprint on our minds. The story is

particularly good preparation if you are someone who

hasn’t been to confession for quite awhile. But for all of

us, who ask repeatedly for the Lord’s mercy at each Mass

we come to, this story is ultimately a welcome portion of

the “good news.”
