Readings for Palm Sunday (29th March) (From the Glenstal Bible Missal: ‘Even in what seems complete dereliction – “Father, why have you deserted me?” – Jesus, with outstretched arms, attracts and gathers to himself mankind and the universe. All seems lost, all is about to begin.’ Is 50:4-7. The inspired Prophet here opens to us the mind of the suffer ing but constant and faithful servant of the Lord, and from where he draws his strength. It is an appropriate introduction to the story of Jesus’ passion. Ps 21:8-9, 17-20, 23-24, R/ v. 2. The response today is Jesus’ prayer on the Cross beginning: “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabathani: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Phil 2:6-11. This ear ly hymn has two movements. Fir stly Jesus empties himself of his divinity to become one of us, to the extent even of dying the shameful death of crucifixion with thieves. The second movement speaks of how God raises his beloved Son to Lordship of all. Mk 14:1 – 15:47. This is the story of Jesus’ passion, and was the or iginal kernel of the Gos-pels.
