During Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. This feast is one of the most important of the year and Catholics need go to Holy Mass either during Christmas Eve or Christmas day to receive the graces that may allow Jesus to be born in our hearts. POPE FRANCIS ANGELUS

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning! The Gospel for this Sunday of Advent highlights the figure of Mary. We see her when, just after having conceived in faith the Son of God, she makes the long trip from Nazareth, in Galilee, to the hill country of Judah, to visit and help her cousin Elizabeth. The Angel Gabriel had revealed to her that her elderly relative, who did not have children, was in her sixth month of pregnancy (cf. Lk 1:26-36). That’s why Our Lady, who carried within her a gift and an even greater mystery, goes to see Elizabeth and stays with her for three months. In the meeting between these two women — one old and the other young — it is the young one, Mary, who offers the first greet-ing. The Gospel says: “she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth” (Lk 1:40). After this greeting, Elizabeth feels envel-oped in great astonishment — don’t forget this word, astonishment. Astonishment. Elizabeth feels enveloped in great astonishment which is echoed in these words: “And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (v. 43). And they embrace and kiss each other, joyfully, these two women. The elderly woman and the young one, both pregnant. To celebrate Christmas in a fruitful manner, we are called to pause in “places” of astonishment. And what are these places of astonishment in everyday life? There are three. The first place is the other, in whom we recognize a brother or sister, because since the birth of Jesus occurred, every face is marked with a semblance to the Son of God. Above all when it is the face of the poor, because God entered the world poor, and it was to the poor, in the first place, that he allowed himself to draw near. Another place of astonishment — the second place in which, if we look with faith, we actually feel astonishment, is history. So many times we think we see it the right way, and instead we risk reading it backwards. It happens, for example, when history seems to us to be determined by the market economy, regulated by finance and business, dominated by the powers that be. The God of Christmas is instead a God who “shuffles the cards” — he likes doing so! As Mary sings in the Magnificat, it is the Lord who puts down the mighty from their thrones and exalts those of low degree, who fills the hungry with good things and sends the rich away empty (cf. Lk 1:52-53). This is the second type of astonishment, astonishment in history. The third place of astonishment is the Church. To look on her with the astonishment of faith means not limiting oneself to consider her only as a religious institution, which she is, but to feel her as a mother who, despite her blemishes and wrinkles — we have so many of them! — allows the features of the beloved bride purified by Christ the Lord to shine through. A Church that is able to recognize the many signs of faithful love that God continuously sends her. A Church for which the Lord Jesus will never be a possession to be jealous-ly protected; those who do this err. The Lord Jesus will always be the One who comes to meet her and whom she knows how to await with trust and joy, giving voice to the hope of the world. The Church that calls to the Lord, “Come Lord Jesus”. The Mother Church that always has her doors open wide, and her arms open to welcome everyone. Moreover, Mother Church goes out from her own doors to seek with a mother’s smile all those who are far and bring them to the mercy of God. This is the astonishment of Christmas. At Christ-mas, God gives us all of himself by giving his Only Son, who is all his joy. It is only with the heart of Mary, the humble and poor daugh-ter of Zion, who became the Mother of the Son of the Most High, that it is possible to rejoice and be glad for the great gift of God and for his unpredictable surprise. May she help us to perceive the astonishment — these three wonders: the other, history and the Church — through the birth of Jesus, the gift of gifts, the undeserved gift who brings us salvation. The encounter with Jesus will enable us too to feel this great astonishment. We cannot have this astonishment, however, we cannot encounter Jesus, if we do not encounter him in oth-ers, in history and in the Church.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas ¡buenos días! El Evangelio de este domingo de Adviento subraya la figura de María. La vemos cuando, justo después de haber concebido en la fe al Hijo de Dios, afronta el largo viaje de Nazaret de Galilea a los montes de Judea, para ir a visitar y ayudar a su prima Isabel. El ángel Ga-briel le había revelado que su pariente ya anciana, que no tenía hijos, estaba en el sexto mes de embarazo (cf. Lc 1, 26.36). Por eso, la Virgen, que lleva en sí un don y un misterio aún más grande, va a ver a Isabel y se queda tres meses con ella. En el encuentro entre las dos mujeres —imaginad: una anciana y la otra joven, es la joven, María, la que saluda primero: El Evangelio dice así: «Entró en casa de Zacarías y saludó a Isabel» (Lc 1, 40). Y, después de ese saludo, Isabel se siente envuelta de un gran asombro —¡no os olvidéis esta pa-labra: asombro. El asombro. Isabel se siente envuelta de un gran asombro que resuena en sus palabras: «¿Quién soy yo para que me visi-te la madre de mi Señor?» (v. 43). Y se abrazan, se besan, felices estas dos mujeres: la anciana y la joven. Las dos embarazadas. Para celebrar bien la Navidad, estamos llamados a detenernos en los «lugares» del asombro. Y, ¿cuáles son los lugares del asombro en la vida cotidiana? Son tres. El primer lugar es el otro, en quien reconocemos a un hermano, porque desde que sucedió el Nacimiento de Jesús, cada rostro lleva marcada la semejanza del Hijo de Dios. Sobre todo cuando es el rostro del pobre, porque como pobre Dios entró en el mundo y y dejó, ante todo, que los pobres se acercaran a Él. Otro lugar del asombro —el segundo— en el que, si miramos con fe, senti-mos asombro, es la historia. Muchas veces creemos verla por el lado justo, y sin embargo corremos el riesgo de leerla al revés. Sucede, por ejemplo, cuando ésta nos parece determinada por la economía de mercado, regulada por las finanzas y los negocios, dominada por los poderosos de turno. El Dios de la Navidad es, en cambio, un Dios que «cambia las cartas»: ¡Le gusta hacerlo! Como canta María en el Magnificat, es el Señor el que derriba a los poderosos del trono y ensalza a los humildes, colma de bienes a los hambrientos y a los ricos despide vacíos (cf. Lc 1, 52-53). Este es el segundo asombro, el asombro de la historia. Un tercer lugar de asombro es la Iglesia: mirarla con el asombro de la fe significa no limitarse a considerarla solamente como institución religiosa que es, sino a sentirla como Madre que, aun entre manchas y arrugas —¡tenemos muchas!— deja ver las características de la Esposa amada y purificada por Cristo Señor. Una Iglesia que sabe reconocer los muchos signos de amor fiel que Dios continuamente le envía. Una Iglesia para la cual el Señor Jesús no será nunca una posesión que defender con celo: quienes hacen esto, se equivocan, sino Aquel que siempre viene a su encuentro y que ésta sabe esperar con confianza y alegría, dando voz a la esperanza del mundo. La Iglesia que llama al Señor: «Ven Señor Jesús». La Iglesia madre que siempre tiene las puertas abiertas, y los brazos abiertos para acoger a todos. Es más, la Iglesia madre que sale de las propias puertas para buscar, con sonrisa de madre a todos los alejados y llevarles a la misericor-dia de Dios. ¡Este es el asombro de la Navidad! En Navidad Dios se nos dona todo donando a su Hijo, el Único, que es toda su alegría. Y sólo con el corazón de María, la humilde y pobre hija de Sión, convertida en Madre del Hijo del Altísimo, es posible exultar y alegrar-se por el gran don de Dios y por su imprevisible sorpresa. Que Ella nos ayude a percibir el asombro —estos tres asombros: el otro, la historia y la Iglesia— por el nacimiento de Jesús, el don de los dones, el regalo inmerecido que nos trae la salvación. El encuentro con Jesús, nos hará también sentir a nosotros este gran asombro. Pero no podemos tener este asombro, no podemos encontrar a Jesús, si no lo encontramos en los demás, en la historia y en la Iglesia.
