In a recent homily, Father Bolte encouraged us to “Go out and

live a dynamic life.” Our high energy priest is inferring that

we should live a dynamic “faith life.” Father has given us the

tools to re-charge our faith life by introducing the “Christ Re-

news His Parish” (CRHP) retreat program. He has witnessed

firsthand the transformation of parishioners at his previous

parishes over his past 34 years of priesthood.

The St. Ignatius team from Cincinnati hosted the inaugural CRHP men’s and women’s retreats for the

Piqua area Catholic community in January & February, 2014. After attending the retreats, the initial St.

Boniface/St. Mary retreat attendees organized the second CRHP retreats, which were held the week-

ends of Oct. 18th for women and Nov. 15th for men.

The retreats began at the Downing Street Campus at 8:00 am on Saturday morning and concluded with

a Mass around 3:00 pm on Sunday. St. Boniface and St. Mary CRHP members presented personal talks

focused on spiritual renewal and growth. Barb Kohl, coordinator of the women’s retreat, explains,

“We don’t just stop growing in our faith in high school. We need to continually grow in our faith with

an emphasis on scripture.” There were also opportunities for private and group prayer as well as for

reconciliation.

The formation of the co-parish CRHP teams has created a bonding opportunity between St. Boniface

and St. Mary parishioners. Barb was gratified at the generous support of both parishes in the form of

delicious homemade foods for both the women’s and men’s retreats. She is sure that parish support will

grow as we become familiar with the program. Don Stonerock, part of the men’s CRHP team, says

“One of the great benefits of attending the retreat is that you get to know your fellow parishioners so

much better and to develop a camaraderie.”

Trent Karn, men's retreat coordinator agrees, "Not only attending but

also conducting the retreat gives you an opportunity to deepen your

faith as well as to connect with fellow parishioners. You meet parish-

ioners that you probably would not have otherwise and gets you more

involved in our faith community."

We can be inspired by those parishioners who recently took a leap of

faith and stepped outside their comfort zones to develop spiritually and

bond with the local Catholic faith community. (Cont. on Page 8)

St. Mary Altar Society: St. Mary Altar Society recently had their Christmas Luncheon.

Afterwards, flowers and Christmas cards were delivered to the

parishioners who are confined to the local nursing homes. Another financial

contribution was made to the Window Preservation Project, and a

donation was also made to the choir for its ribbon banners.

Members will be selling desserts at the fish fry on February 27th.

And plans are being made for the Combination Dinner for the St. Mary and

St. Boniface ladies, which we will be hosting on April 23rd. Watch the

bulletin for further details.

Adult Faith Formation: Mass for Deceased Parishioners: On November 2, a mass was held in mem-

ory of deceased parishioners from both parishes at St. Mary. A reception was held in the school cafeteria

afterwards.

Coffee and Doughnuts: Held on the first Sunday of the month after the St. Mary 9:00 am and

the St. Boniface 10:30 am Masses. This is a time to enjoy refreshment and fellowship with fel-

low parishioners. Sponsored by the Family Life Commissions of both parishes, the Adult Faith

Formation coordinates the different groups hosting. If your group would like to host, please

contact Barb Kohl.

Christ Renews His Parish: Programs of personal renewal for men and women of both parishes were

held in October and November. Thank you to all for their prayers and food donations that helped to make

the retreats a success. Participants from both retreats are now meeting to plan retreats for fall 2015. The

Adult Faith Formation Commission will continue to act in a continuation capacity for this ongoing parish

renewal program.

Lent: The Commission is now in the planning stages for the upcoming Lenten season. Stations of the

Cross will be offered on Thursday evenings at St. Mary and Sunday afternoons at St. Boniface. Times

will be listed in the bulletin during Lent. Book discussion groups are also planned for Life’s Greatest Les-

son: What I Learned from the Happiest People I Know by Allen R. Hunt, distributed at Christmas from

the Archdiocese.

The Adult Faith Formation Commission is comprised of members from both St. Boniface and St. Mary

parishes, Fr. Bolte, and Sister Joan Clare. St. Boniface members are Nancy Peltier, Julie Tyler and Chuck

Tyler. St. Mary members are Ann Koehl, Barb Kohl (chairperson), Cathy Oda and Gloria Stonerock.

Meetings are held at the North Street Campus on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm except during

the months of July and December. Anyone interested in being a part of this commission is welcome to

attend or contact any of the current members.

Questions concerning any of our activities, please contact Barb Kohl (773-9205 or [email protected]).

St. Boniface Family Life:

SANTA: The Family/Parish Life Group thanks you for your overwhelming support of

its annual Christmas project — the Shut-ins And Needy Treats Appeal. Your generous

“caring/sharing” helped to bring the Christmas spirit to 18 families in our community,

including more than 25 children. In addition to the gifts, fresh fruit plates/poinsettias

were delivered to our parish’s shut-ins and staff. Our parishes’ Mission Committee Pro-

jects and the Elizabeth New Life Center received donations, too. Thanks to the follow-

ing for the giving of their time at this very busy time of year.

Fruit Plate Assembly: Martha Hemm, Karen Nickol, Rich and Pat Knab, David Pickering, Keith & Joyce

Thornberry, Tim and Debie Tyler, Juanita Ventura; Fruit Plate/Flower Delivery: Craig Peltier and the

following Confirmation Candidates and their families: Mason Darner, Madison Guillozet, Anna Haas,

Zach Kronenberger, Sophie Pitsenbarger, Brieanna Werling; Gift Delivery: Karen Barringer, Mary Ellen

& Jarrod Buechter, Chuck Peltier, Mark Pitsenbarger & Family, Geri & Grace Ryan.

ST. BONIFACE COOKBOOK: Really “big” thank yous to the following: Cookbook Committee: Jo

Pierson, Terri Sherman, Juanita Ventura; “60+” Cookbook Advertisers/Sponsors; Cookbook Sales: Jan’s

Hair Hut, Joe Thoma Jewelers, Kroger’s, Miami Valley Centre Mall, Readmore’s Hallmark, Tapestry An-

gel; Family Cookbook Publisher/Kathy LeFevre; to “all” who submitted recipes, photos, historical info,

etc.; and a really, really big thank you to “all” who purchased the cookbooks. A total of 650 cookbooks

were ordered — there are just a few left — and they can be purchased at Hallmark or the parish office.

CABBAGE ROLL/HERITAGE BREAD SALE: Over 650 cabbage rolls and 300+ loaves of bread were

sold at our 1st-Ever Cabbage Roll/Heritage Bread Sale in November. Thanks to ALL who helped make

the cabbage rolls — Bill Caserta, Bonne Decknadel, Jim Hemm, Theresa Henderson, Rich and Pat Knab;

and who helped to make the breads and worked at the sale—Karen Barringer, Debbie Darner, John &

Brenda Karpinski, Karen Magoteaux, Karen Nickol, Betty & Craig Peltier, Chuck & Nancy Peltier, Joyce

Thornberry, Chuck Tyler. And thanks, too, to

those individuals who helped to market the sale

and to ALL who made purchases.

One more very big “Thank You” to our Par-

ishes’ Staff — Father Bolte, Theresa Hender-

son, Judy Lohnes, Mark Pitsenbarger, Linda

Richard, & Sister Joan Clare — for helping with

“all” of the above St. B. Family Life activities.

They fielded the phone calls, provided the infor-

mation, sold cookbooks, took cabbage roll/

bread orders, and SO MUCH MORE!

Thank You! Bless You!

On the last day that Father Sharplis, Sister Grace, Beth, Pet and Augustus were here, a formal agreement

was signed to continue the Twinning relationship between St. Boniface/St. Mary Parishes in Piqua,

Ohio and St. John/St. Louis Parish in Portsmouth, Dominica. This document outlines the intent to have

our parishes continue to work together for at least the next three years to discern the will of God in our

relationship with the intent that this be a long term relationship between our parishes. The signing of the

agreement culminated the 10 day visit of our friends from Dominica. Plans are currently underway for our

next trip to Dominica which is scheduled in the early part of 2016. Anyone interested in becoming in-

volved with our twinning project can contact any Twinning Team member (Sister Mary Alice, Bob Hart-

ings, Marlene Henry, John/Brenda Karpinski, Mark Pitsenbarger, Father Tom Bolte) or the Parish Mission

Committee.

TWINNING COVENANT - 2014

The parishes of St John/St. Louis, Portsmouth, Commonwealth of Dominica and of St. Mary

and St. Boniface, Piqua, Ohio, USA hereby enter into a covenant. Our shared goal is

to grow in faith together in Jesus Christ. For the mutual benefit and support of both parish

communities, we desire to learn from each other and share both cultures and resources.

The initial term of this covenant is for three years, beginning on this 17th day of

September of the year of our Lord 2014; however, it is the genuine desire

of both communities that this be a long-term relationship.

In signing this covenant, we ask the blessings of Almighty God upon this endeavor.

My name is Jim Niswonger, and I am a student in the Lay Pastoral Ministry Program (LPMP).

The LPMP, offered through the Athenaeum of Ohio, is a two year Certificate Pro-

gram designed to empower the lay faithful to become more effective ministers,

grounded in Catholic doctrine and engaged in the mission of the Church. The program

is for both women and men, and one does not have to be Catholic for entrance. The

program is also a prerequisite for any Catholic man that wishes to apply for candidacy

to the Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

The components of the Program currently are 13 classes. 5 - 5 week classes, 7- 10 week classes and 1- 15

week class. The classes are: Basic Doctrine, Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pastoral Communication,

Old Testament, New Testament, Discipleship, Using Scripture in Parish Ministry, Liturgy and Prayer, Ec-

clesiology, Church History, Evangelization and Social Media, Jesus, the Christ of Faith and Morality and

Justice in Catholic Life.

The classes are held in several locations. For those who live in the southern Archdiocese, classes meet on

weekday evenings at the Seminary. For those who live in the northern Archdiocese, the classes alternate

every two years and are held on Saturdays. They are usually at the Pilarcyck Center on Needmore Rd. in

Dayton for two years, and another location in the north for two years. Since August of 2013, when I en-

tered the Program, the classes have met at Sacred Heart Parish in McCartyville on Saturdays. The classes

are through the Seminary and on the same semester schedule. There are both morning and afternoon

classes. The Saturday morning class is from 9:30am-12:10pm. There is a 50 minute break for lunch. Then

the afternoon class meets from 1:00pm-3:40pm.

There is a Mentoring component in which the student meets with a Mentor (Religious) for 40 hours

through the course of the program. Usually, an hour meeting for a total of 10 hours through the semester.

My Mentor is Sister Mary Alice Haithcoat, and I am so grateful for her willingness to encourage and help

me with my Spiritual growth. Thank you!! Sister Mary Alice!!

There is a 75 hour Field Education component in which the student participates in Social Justice ministry.

Examples of this would be volunteering at a hospital, food bank, homeless shelter, etc. For my Field Edu-

cation, I am serving at The Bethany Center for the

Friday evening meal between 4:30pm-6:30pm. The

meal is from 5-6pm. I would like to thank Wilma

Earls and Cathy Large for all that they do for the

community through The Bethany Center. Thank you

Ladies!!

During the program, it is required that you complete

a day retreat once a year. There are 2 Theological

Reflection components and there is a Project in Min-

istry. This Spring of 2015, I am entering my final

Semester of the Program. I would like to take this

opportunity to Thank the Piqua Catholic Community

for the opportunity to represent our Parishes!!

God Bless,

Jim Niswonger

The Center for Early Learning at Piqua Catholic:

On behalf of the preschool staff and families, I would like to wish each of you a

Happy New Year. Our hope is that all of you experienced a blessed Christmastime

with your families and friends. We have much to be thankful for as we reflect on

2014 and begin the next year!

The children have grown in many ways since the start of the school year. Midyear

assessments show tremendous improvements in letter recognition and sounds, as

well as many other cognitive skills. Every day, the children are developing

positive relationships with their peers through play and small group activities.

We had a great turnout for Parents Night Out with 25 children joining the staff

for a special night of The Polar Express. It was a very memorable night for the

children and staff, and we are looking forward to our second Parent’s Night out

on March 6, 2015. The preschool children also performed at the Piqua Catholic Christmas concert sing-

ing a special rendition of “Frosty the Snowman” with the junior high band. It was very sweet, and the

overall concert was amazing.

I would like to take a moment to thank two ladies who have volunteered with the preschool. Fran Wil-

liamson has been greeting our families every Tuesday morning since the start of last school year. She

gives the children and families extra attention on these mornings when she greets each one of them with a

warm smile and hello. Kim Cathcart began volunteering with our prekindergarten class this year and has

been implementing our religious education curriculum, Who am I, with the children on Wednesday

mornings. The children love her and enjoy learning about how each of them is made special in God’s

image. The second half of the school year will be exciting as we study clothes, buildings, recycling, and

more! Thank you for your support, prayers, and encouragement.

Reason for the Season (Front Page) Continued: Ultimately, the Christ Renews His Parish program

can be viewed as a process in which renewed people put faith into action by supporting other parish or-

ganizations and ministries. Through the Christ Renews His Parish program, parishes report a renewed

spirit of community and visitors have noted a spirit of welcome and belonging. As Fa-

ther Bolte emphasizes weekly, our mission is to get to heaven, and we help ourselves

when we help others get there too. We can evangelize others when we put our faith in

action because we have credibility.

In John 10:37-38: “If I do not perform my Father’s works, do not believe me; but if I perform them, even

if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize (and understand) that the Father is in

me and I am in the Father.” The works of the Holy Spirit are a result of an authentic encounter with the

Risen Christ. Don’t miss the opportunity to have an authentic encounter with the Risen Christ. Enrich and

renew your faith life by trying something new and attend a Christ Renews His Parish retreat in the fall of

2015.

Spelling Bee Winners Beth Trent took first place in

the St. Mary School Spelling

Bee. She advances to city-

wide competition. Chris

Osman placed second, and

Betsy Bell is the alternate.

Trent and Osman are sixth

graders, while Bell is in the

seventh grade. Trent cor-

rectly spelled “bleachers” to

win the competition.

Lehman’s Football Team Dancing Lehman football coach Steve Hunsucker is getting his players ready for

the 1985 football season. Weightlifting and ballet have begun as the

Cavalier football team reports to the multipurpose room behind the

school on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays.

Carolyn Barhorst and Kelli Anderson, Lehman sopho-

mores, instruct the players in ballet and Hunsucker pro-

vides weightlifting skills. Team members earn points for

attendance and weightlifting accomplishments. The

amount of points each receives will determine the order

in which that player receives his football uniform for

next year. At this time, there are 24 males participating, excluding bas-

ketball players, wrestlers, and incoming freshmen, who will be on the

team next year.

A new addition was made to the outside na-

tivity scene at St. Mary's thanks to the gen-

erosity of all the parishioners who contrib-

uted to the annual Christmas Flower Fund.

Those funds were used to purchase the lit-

tle donkey that could be seen for the first

time in the set. Special thanks go to Jerry

and Vicky Peltier who paid for the construc-

tion of the extension to the existing crib.

Father Bolte has approved the adding of a

shepherd statue to the set for next year's

display.

The 42nd Anniversary (January 22, 1973) of the Roe vs Wade

decision legalizing abortion in the United States is quickly

approaching. In the last 42 years, there have been 57,449,623

abortions. That is almost 57.5 million murders of innocent

children. Join us in prayer for an end to abortion and a re-

newed respect for the sanctity human life. Also watch the

weekly bulletin for announcements about events commemo-

rating this anniversary.

Prayer to End Abortion

Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life,

And for the lives of all my brothers and sisters.

I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion,

Yet I rejoice that you have conquered death

by the Resurrection of Your Son.

I am ready to do my part in ending abortion.

Today I commit myself

Never to be silent,

Never to be passive,

Never to be forgetful of the unborn.

I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement,

And never to stop defending life

Until all my brothers and sisters are protected,

And our nation once again becomes

A nation with liberty and justice

Not just for some, but for all.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen!
