WEEKLY CATECHESIS

WHY IS THE CHURCH INTERESTED NOT ONLY IN THE INDIVIDUAL?

It used to be that the Church was accused of being interested only in the salvation of the individual soul. In fact, every individual human being counts in God’s sight. We are all irreplaceable and unique. Neverthe-less, from our mother’s womb we are dependent on communion with other human beings. We can be happy only in good relationships with others. There-fore it says in the account of creation:” Then the Lord God said, ’It is not good that the man should be alone: I will make him a helper fit for him’” (Gen 2:18). God is interested in the total welfare of a person and, therefore, also in his development of community, in which people participate in manifold ways.

WHY DOES THE CHURCH PRACTICE SOLI-

DARITY?

A Church that showed no solidarity would be a con-tradiction in terms. The Church is the place in which God’s lasting solidarity with mankind comes about. In the communion of the Church, God’s love is sup-posed to have its human continuation and finally reach all mankind. The Church is the place where God wants to gather all men: “Behold, the dwelling of God is with men” (Rev 21:3). The Church is the “sign and instrument of a very closely knit union with God and of the unity of the human race” (LG 1). Through his Church, which follows the example of her Lord and shows solidarity with the helpless, the victims of injustice, and the poor of her times, God tries to reach the people of all nations and cultures and to help them. Whenever people try to shape a more human world, God is on their side. The Church is therefore in solidarity with all who want to give God’s salvation a visible face in the world.

you stand in a garage.” ~ Albert Scweitzer

Prayer for the Selection of a New Bishop

Merciful Father, you gave us shepherds as successors of the apostles to guide and govern your church. We implore your Holy Spirit to guide the selection process as a new bishop is chosen to lead our diocese. May he be a pastor filled with holiness and compas-sion who will foster healing and a greater love of your name. Allow our hearts to be open to the candidate of your choosing so that, together as disciples of Jesus, we may continue to build your kingdom. Amen. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

St. Mary/St. Mark Senior Group

Our “Senior Group” started approximately 20 years ago and began as a bereavement group which Jean Mullins and I started to help our parishioners who had lost a loved one. We helped through meetings, caring, prayers and discussions. We met once a month in the Michael D. Christopher Room at St. Mary’s with a bagged lunch, prayers, discussions, reflections and a game to finish the meeting. We played cards, Piction-ary, Bingo, etc. When we played Bingo, everyone brought in a white elephant wrapped for prizes. After a few years it quickly went from a bereavement group to a social group and we renamed it “The Senior Group”, and started to go out for the day starting with lunch in a restaurant, a meeting with prayers, a quote of the month, a game and discussions as to what’s go-ing on in our church our lives and families then some sightseeing and ice cream to finish the day! Over these many years we have traveled to Niagara on the Lake, Our Lady of Victory National Shrine & Basilica, The Abbey of the Genesee, Our Lady of Fatima Shrine, Genesee Country Museum, Niagara Wine Trail, The Lilac Festival, Geneva on the Lake, Letch-worth State Park, The Little Grand Canyon in Pennsyl-vania, Skaneateles, Medina Railroad Fall train ride and too many more to mention. We sometimes have as many as 12 to 14 ladies join us on our day trips and we are blessed with an extra driver, Alma Gilman. Thank you Alma! And a blessing and ministry that was born out of our Senior Group is called “Shopping with Friends”! I have been involved in many ministries in our church-es and next to being an extraordinary minister this is the most enjoyable and fulfilling. Not only do I get to take them on day trips but I get to see and enjoy all these places with them. I have been so blessed to trav-el with these ladies whom I love and call friends. They have taught me grace and helped me grow in faith, caring and love! All are welcome! If you would like to join us, please call Gail at 638-6294. Thank you! Gail Christ
