Pope Francis from Joy of the Gospel, #99: I especially ask Christians in communities throughout the world to offer a radiant and attractive witness of fraternal communion. Let everyone admire how you care for one another, and how you encourage and accompany one another: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (Jn 13:35)

From the Finance Council
Nov 25, 2015 Presentation
Dear Friends:
I would like to explain why we are starting to put financial infor-
mation in our weekly bulletin. First of all, I want to honour you for
your generous giving over the years; both towards your tithes and
towards all the other evangelistic works.
As a result, St. Mary’s parish has been known for its generosity,
especially given its small size.
Why are we presenting this financial data? To keep our parish
informed of how we are doing financially: to reflect the status of our
income vs our budgeted expenses, and to allow us as a parish to
react in a timely manner if so required.
How and when are we going to present this data in the bulletin?
The annual picture will be updated on a monthly basis. For the
year, we can see that we are $36,000 short by the end of Sept. The
monthly picture will be updated weekly. We will be another $8,000
short by the end of Oct.
Do we have explanations for this shortfall? On the income side, the
biggest factor is the reduced number of parishioners. On the ex-
pense side, the expenses are slightly lower than 2014.
What has St. Mary’s council being doing about it? The staff and
council have been scrutinizing and reducing the expenses since
the end of 2014: reviewing our suppliers, getting more estimates
for the contracts, and the utilities and also reviewing our taxes to
the diocese. But we have not impacted our employees. The annual
picture tells us that we are 10% short of our annual goal. However
the weekly picture for Oct tells us that we are currently 25% short
on our weekly goal. The parish is dipping into its savings pool of
$75,000 ($25,000 taken out so far) to overcome this shortfall: but
at this rate we will soon be exhausting our savings: by June 2016.
To note, our current budget does not include any monies that will be
required for the major repairs of the church building envelope which
we have been postponing for a number of years.
So what do we recommend. For those who are already tithing, I
thank you for your generosity, and ask you to take it to prayer and
consider increasing your tithe. Let me give you an example of a
25% change: if one is giving $10 per week, it would mean giving
$12.5 per week. If you are giving $40 per week it would mean giving
$50 per week. Whatever you decide, please do so with a cheerful
heart.
For those who are not tithing but could be, please read Father
Bob’s booklet “Do you mean God wants my money too?” and ask
God to show you how much you could give with a cheerful heart.
For those who cannot contribute financially, please seek out how
you can serve the parish if you are not already doing so. Father
Bob’s booklet will be made available at the back of the church.
Questions? If you have any questions, concerns, sugges-
tions please call me, André Pion, at (613) 723-0150 or Marian
Corak, our Director of Operations.
