OUR MISSION STATEMENT
St. Mary's is a community of believers dedicated to the living worship of God. As the only Catholic Church in Limestone County, our faith community reflects the ethnic diversity of the towns in which we live. We gather to fulfill our mission as dis-ciples of Jesus Christ: we hear His Word, we celebrate the Sac-raments and we witness His love to others. Our Christian wit-ness consists of sharing our spiritual gifts with the grace of God and the example and prayers of our patron saint, the Immacu-late Conception, among us and with others - striving to grow in Holiness.

Jesus Sat the Earth On Fire
“I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I
must be baptized (his death), and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think I have come to establish
peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two
and two against three. . . (Luke 12:49-52). Paul said: “First of all, then, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone.
. . . That we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. This is good and pleasing to God our savior,
who wills everyone to be saved and come to knowledge of the truth” (1 Tim. 2:1-4).
Do Jesus and Paul contradict each other? No! They are both speaking of the same truth. Jesus knows that there
will be people who not only reject him, but, those who will reject his teachings. Jesus said:” Amen, Amen I say to you, no
one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit [Baptism] (John 3:5). But, some people say
that’s not what he meant and calls Baptism a mere ordnance. Another case is when Jesus told the ‘rich young man’ . . . “If
you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments” (Matt. 6:17). Instead, some people say that once they “accepted Je-
sus Christ into their hearts as there personal Lord and Savior”, that their salvation is secured and nothing will prevent
them from going to heaven. Jesus never said that and it is a non-Biblical, manmade phrase.
The biggest division comes from Jesus' very words that Catholics have always taken literally from the apostolic
age to the present and that some groups have taken symbolically. Jesus said: "Amen, Amen I say to you, unless you eat
the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my
blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day" (John 6:53-54). Does this mean that they will have symbolic
eternal life, and then will be symbolically raised on the last day, and will have symbolic life within them?
Historically, the Catholic Church existed since the foundation of Jesus Christ and then Orthodox and Protestant-
ism stemmed away from the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Protestantism sprouted like mushrooms, and, in
doing so, many people followed their new teachings. Today there are approximately 50,000 separate denominations, all
proclaiming to be guided by the Holy Spirit and all with conflicting doctrine. Do you think that the Holy Spirit would
have ever guided anyone into contradiction? If Jesus would have only said all that you need to do is 'accept me into your
heart as your personal Lord and Savior' there would have never been any division. But, he didn't. And, it's not that simple.
Jesus established His Church and promised that “the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it” (Matt.
16:18). The Catholic Church has stood for nearly 2,000 years with that promise Jesus made. Yes, he has caused division,
because he knew that some people would turn away from of His Church and follow a different path.
