If I make it that far, I will still be 15 years short of the time spent here by Monsignor Andrew Keene Gwynn, the most transformational pastor in our history. At the same time, the interior of our church needs significant attention: new pews and kneelers, new fan coil units for heating and cooling, new wainscoting to replace the crumbling plywood, patching and painting the plaster, and repairing and enhancing the organ that lifts all our worship. To accomplish all of these projects, we need the sacrificial generosity of every household in the parish, each according to its means, and so I am asking you now to reaffirm and complete or even expand your pledge if you have already made one and, if you have not yet made a pledge or offered a gift, to make a decision to do so now. If everyone in the parish participates in this effort, we will be able to expand and improve our facilities and provide for the next generation of St Mary’s parishioners to have a safe, convenient, and beautiful place to pray, study, play, and serve others. We were well on our way to meeting our goal in the Forward in Faith capital campaign when the virus forced us to shut everything down, and we will have to live with uncomfortable limitations until a vaccine, herd immunity, a natural burnout of the virus, or some combination of all three allows us to live without constant concern for our health and that of our neighbors. But even in the midst of these trying days, life goes on, and we must make plans for the future. I mentioned above my distinguished predecessor, Monsignor Gwynn, who guided the construction of our church, the founding of our school, and the building of what we now call Mercy Hall and Gallivan Hall. Those two structures were put up and paid for during the first years of the Great Depression, and so the trials of this present disruption to life should not discourage us in pressing ahead to provide for the future of St Mary’s. Come what may, we are here to stay, as I hope to be for the rest of my days. May the LORD of mercies sustain us all to the glory of His Holy Name. Father Newman

9 August 2020

Dear Friends in Christ,

In June I completed my 19th year at St Mary’s, in July I celebrated the 27th anniversary of my priestly ordination, and this past week I turned 58. If I have a full span of years, I hope to retire in July 2038 when I will celebrate the 45th anniversary of my ordination, by which time I will have been pastor here 37 years and be just shy of my 76th birthday. If I make it that far, I will still be 15 years short of the time spent here by Monsignor Andrew Keene Gwynn, the most transformational pastor in our history. But whatever my numbers come to in the end, I know already that I am blessed beyond all telling to serve this green and pleasant corner of the vineyard, and I thank you for your continuing patience with me!

I’ve been pondering those numbers recently not because I’m looking to the past but because I’m looking to the future. In 2022 our parish will be 170 years old, and I would very much like to dedicate our newly expanded gymnasium as part of that celebration. And as soon as we can raise the money, we need to begin work on the church annex to provide accessible restrooms and confessionals, a proper nursery, and space for our excellent musicians to have a practice space just a few steps from the choir loft.

OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

July 2020 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Pope Pius VII canonically erected the Diocese of Charleston on July 11, 1820. This month, we will celebrate the bicentennial of its historic founding. To give glory to God and to mark this momentous occasion, the diocese has organized liturgies, conferences, events, displays, videos, and more that have taken new life in the post-COVID-19 world. We are adjusting our celebration to meet our new normal and are excited to celebrate this momentous occasion for the remainder of 2020. For these events, we must rely on donations which can be made during a special collection which will be taken up August 9. These funds will help commemorate the important accomplishments in our history and inspire South Carolina's Catholics to unite as one. Please note that these funds are not associated with the Bicentennial Campaign and will be used specifically for the above stated purposes.

We have much to celebrate in a state that offers countless stories of faith-filled men and women who have served and sacrificed, and of the ministry of our great Church. Our first bishop, Most Rev. John England, started out with a large territory comprised of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. He traveled throughout the territory and immediately began to make disciples and history.

We continue to be a diocese of firsts, we had the first Catholic Church in the Carolinas and Georgia, the first important American Catholic theoretician of freedom of religion and separation of church and state, one of the first permanent deacons to be ordained in the United States, and the first Catholic newspaper in the country to name but a few.

Please consider donating to the August 9th Special Collection to help us implement a meaningful enterprise for everyone. Your generosity will assist in uniting the people of God as they join together in celebrating our history, our present and our future.

Thank you, and may God bless you abundantly.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert E. Guglielmone Bishop, Diocese of Charleston

The collection date for the Diocese of Charleston is August 9, 2020. This collection is not associated with the Bicentennial Campaign.

SAn Introduction to Catholicism

What is Catholicism?

Is the Catholic Faith in the Bible?

Did the Lord Jesus found the Catholic Church?

Our course called An Introduction to Catholicism is designed to answer

these and many other questions about the origins of Catholic

Christianity and the shape of Christian faith and life within the

Catholic Church.

The classes meet on Wednesday evenings from 6.30 to 7.30 pm from

Labor Day through Easter, and all are invited to come and discover what

it means to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus in His holy Catholic Church.

We will celebrate one Mass at 10.00 am.

Baptism ClassPrior to having a child baptized at Saint Mary’s, you must have been registered in the parish for at least six months, attending Sunday Mass each week, using the stewardship envelopes, and participating in the life of the parish.

Baptisms take place on Saturdays at 6.15 pm after the 5.00 pm Mass. Attending a Baptism Preparation Class is required and may be attended prior to the birth of your child. The next class is scheduled for Monday 24 August at 6.30 pm in Sacred Heart Hall. Pre-registration in the church office is required. For questions, contact T.J. Streaming Mass in Gallivan Hall Anyone who wants to attend Mass at St Mary’s is welcome to do so, and Gallivan Hall is open during every weekend Mass to provide plenty of room for everyone. Mass is clearly visible and audible in Gallivan Hall thanks to our cinema screen and sound system, and the rest rooms to the left of the stage will be open.

Those who attend Mass in Gallivan Hall are welcome to receive Holy Communion either by walking over to the church during the Communion Rite or by coming immediately after Mass and waiting in the center aisle for the priest or deacon to begin a second distribution of Communion. These two options will allow for the reception of Holy Communion without a crowd forming in the church.

Please note that every other pew remains closed to allow for social distancing, and we continue to encourage strongly the wearing of a face mask and careful attention to hand washing and purifying to help reduce the spread of the virus. Our cry rooms remain closed because proper distancing is not possible in those spaces, and for now Confessions are being heard in the cry rooms on Saturday from 3.30 - 4.30 pm. The Wednesday afternoon Holy Hour has returned from 5.00 - 6.00 pm.

Finally, the dispensation from the Sunday obligation remains in force, which means that no one is required to attend Mass, even though all must find a way to keep the Lord’s Day holy, and the best way to do that is by joining in the sacred liturgy live-streamed on Sunday morning at 11 am. If you are at risk of the severe symptoms possible from exposure to SARS-CoV-2, then please stay home and join us in prayer remotely.
