This straightaway showed us the kind of man God has given us in the new pope; a very praccal and realisc man of God. What a powerful image! This was obviously inspired by the gospel reading we hear this weekend (John 10:11-18); where Jesus is referring to himself as the ‘Good Shepherd’. He goes on to say, “I know mine and mine know me….” . Jesus also points out that the sheep hear his voice and follow him. This cannot really be possible if the Shepherd doesn’t spend quality me with the sheep. This is exactly what Pope Francis is saying; that we cannot accompany people or journey with them properly if we don’t meet them where they are at. It is then that we will able to fully understand them and support them. We cannot presume if we are not close to them or have their best interests at heart. Jesus refers to himself as the ‘good shepherd’ as different from a ‘hired’ person who is paid to look aſter the sheep for the owner. The hired person, Jesus says, only does it for the pay and his personal interests. But a good shepherd “lays down his life for the sheep”. Here we see Jesus referring to true love and self-sacrifice for the good of all. These qualies of the good shepherd help build a lot of trust between the ‘shepherd’ and the ‘sheep’. The atude of the ‘hired’ person has adverse effects where they will put themselves first rather than the flock and at the slightest challenge will abandon the sheep. This obviously leads to the flock being scaered rather than being together and journeying together. We don’t need to look too far to see this happening around us today in the church, society etc. My dear friends, this message is not just for those ‘in authority’ or ‘leadership posions’. We are all shepherds in our different capacies; in our homes, workplaces etc. and a lot of people look up to us for guidance and direcon (even if we don’t know it). Jesus needs us to learn from him and help make the world a beer place. We cannot be ‘good shepherds’ if we are not ‘good sheep’. We cannot be good leaders if we are not good followers. If we follow well, we will lead those following us to the right direcon. Joke for the Week ….

An Irishman not able to find a

parking space starts to pray

“Lord, if you open a space for me, I swear

I’ll give up on me whiskey and go to church

every week.” Suddenly the clouds parted

and the sun shone on an empty space.

The Irishman then said “Never mind. I

found one!”
