MEN’S AND LADIES GROUPS.
I have had several enquiries about when and where we meet. We meet on the first
Tuesday of the month in the Cratfield Poacher at 7.30pm, and on the
second and fourth Tuesdays in the Laxfield Low House, also at 7pm.
The third Tuesday of the month is a Ladies Group in the Cratfield Poacher.

OPEN THE BOOK.
Open the book is a project to offer Bible stories in schools, churches and other places
where children meet. Teams of between four and seven volunteers use a variety of visual
aids to present stories in a lively and compelling way. We are establishing a team in this
benefice so if you would like to know more then please let me know, but be warned: you
must be prepared to have fun.

WILBY SCHOOL CHRISTMAS FAYRE
Suffolk Historic Churches Cycle Ride
Many thanks to the Roughton family from Wilby who cycled around the churches in
September. Half of the money raised went to the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust and our
church received the other half which amounted to £113.50. We are most grateful to them
for doing this again.
Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
The amount raised from house to house collections in Wilby this year came to £415.25. The
church collection at our Remembrance Sunday service also was given to the Poppy Appeal
and this came to £161.88. Grateful thanks should be expressed to Priscilla Williamson and
Celia Woollatt who once again went round the village to do the collection.
Christmas Services
Our Carol Service by Candlelight is on Sunday December 20th at 6.30pm. As usual we
will be having mulled wine and mince pies after the service. On Christmas Day our service
will be at 9.30am and will be a Family Service with Holy Communion.

ST MARY’S CHURCH, WILBY
Christmas Trees at Town Farm I am pleased to say that we raised a total of £60 last December for St Mary’s Wilby,
St Lawrence’s Brundish and All Saints Stradbroke Churches from folks who came to see
us at Town Farm for their Christmas Trees.
Trees grown here will be available again this year, a selection will be freshly cut for you
to choose from and delivered to your door if you wish.
I am aiming to be here for folks to come and choose on Saturday 5th and
Saturday 12th December but please telephone first to make sure we are here.

NEWS FROM WILBY SCHOOL
The term is whizzing through and the children have been very busy with lots of activities.
The youngest children have been studying space, and have had a fantastic time building
rockets, space suits, UFO’s and doing some amazing writing associated with this topic.
At the older end of the school Beech Class have been studying the work of William
Shakespeare and are in the midst of rehearsing a play which celebrates this. There are
certainly some budding thespians in the class! Beech Class also had another chance to
hone their performance skills after being invited to attend and perform at “The Big Sing”
event at Snape Maltings this month.
Willow Class have been studying the Anglo-Saxons and had a very enjoyable day visiting
the Anglo-Saxon village at North Stow. There was lots to see and learn both in the
museum and exploring the village. The children also found time for some very enjoyable
and enthusiastic re-enactments of the Beowulf legend! Willow Class is also continuing to
investigate the natural habitat within their science lessons and put learning into practice
during their visit to Framlingham Mere.
Several events are coming up at School in the very near future to which you are warmly
invited. On Saturday, 5th December, 11.30am- 2pm, the School is hosting its annual
Christmas Fayre. Lots of Christmas goodies are available to buy as well as various
tombolas, lucky dip stalls and the Christmas Draw. Father Christmas has also promised to
pop in so here’s hoping everyone has been on their best behaviour!
If you would like to find out more about what goes on at Wilby Primary School why not
pop along to the School’s open morning on Tuesday, 8th December, 9.00 – 12.00. You
will have the chance to see the school in action as well as chat to teachers, support staff
and other parents about the school.
On Friday, 18th December the School is having its Christmas Service at St Mary’s
Church, Wilby, at 1.30. This is followed by tea and mince pies in the School Hall and you
are very welcome to join us for part or all of the afternoon’s Christmas celebrations.
The Thursday morning “Tea and Toys” group for children between 0-5 years old
and their parents continues to run during term times.
No need to book, just turn up –the team would love to see you.
Please note the group now starts at the slightly later time of 9.30am.

NEWS FROM WILBY PARISH COUNCIL
December 2015
The Parish Council met on Wednesday 4 November 2015. A summary of the matters
discussed is given below.
Locality Budget Grant Our District Councillor, Julie Flatman, has secured a grant of £400 for Wilby from her Locality
Budget. The Parish Council is seeking to put this grant towards local improvements of benefit to the
whole community.
Planning Applications Council supported planning applications for a change of use of land and buildings from agricultural
to residential use within the curtilage and for internal alterations at Church Farm., London City Road.
Consideration of an application for an anaerobic digester at Barley Brigg Farm, Stradbroke would be
the subject of a separately convened meeting.
Village Survey 130 survey forms were returned of the 226 issued. These are now being analysed and the findings
collated to give us a picture of the village and the views of its residents. Arrangements are being made
to hold a public meeting in February 2016 to announce and discuss the results and to enable the Coun-
cil, the Church, the School and the Village Hall to indicate how they intend responding to the survey
findings.
Defibrillator The Council agreed to enter into a contract with the Community Heartbeat Trust to provide a defibril-
lator in the telephone box and associated services, subject to confirmation that funding for the project
would be provided from the Rix Petroleum Community Fund. A number of volunteers have come
forward to take part in awareness and the necessary first aid training so as to be available to operate
the defibrillator in an emergency. Preferably everyone in the village should have some knowledge of
how to use the defibrillator. To this end plans are in hand to hold short illustrated awareness sessions
whenever significant numbers of the community are gathered together at public events.
Broadband A public meeting arranged by our County Councillor is to be held on Thursday 3 December 2015 at
a time and location to be announced to receive a briefing on the superfast broadband programme and
to enable a discussion thereafter. Details of this meeting when known will be published on the Parish
noticeboard and website and also circulated to those on the e-mail register.
Speed Restriction – London City Road
Our County Councillor, Guy McGregor, has advised that the proposal to have a speed restriction on
parts of London City Road is to be considered by the Speed Panel in December 2015, this being the
next stage in the process.
E-mail register
The e-mail register will now be activated by the Parish Clerk and will be used for example to
distribute this notice of Council proceedings and other information of community interest.
Council vacancies There remain two vacancies on the Council which we are anxious to fill both to ensure that we
always legally have sufficient councillors present to conduct our business but also to make the
Council more fully representative of the community it serves. If you would like to serve on the
Council or wish to know more about it please contact the Chairman (Ian Williamson – 01379
388034) or the Clerk (Julie Collett - 01986 798258) for further information. Next meeting The next regular meeting of the Parish Council will be held in the Village Hall at 7.30 pm on

“Striving for something for everyone”
My thanks go out to the committee members and Sheila (Mutimer) for giving up their time on
the 28th. October (in between showers) to plant daffodil bulbs all around the hall.
What a great way for Kenny Mutimer to have spent his birthday!
We look forward to seeing as many of the bulbs emerge as possible.
It is with great sadness that Angela McCann passed away aged 87 on the 11th. November. A
resident of Wilby for over 22 years her many years door to door collecting for both Poppy and
Lifeboat Appeals, regular attendance at hall lunches and delivery of meals on wheels made her
a well known figure in the community. She was a passionate gardener and retired landscape
architect. Anyone needing tips or plant advice would be told “Ask Angela”. Angela was very
appreciative of her good neighbours, friends and carers saying that in later years she felt “very
well propped up by everybody”. We will miss her. Angela’s next of kin would like to thank all
her friends, neighbours and carers for their kindness. They welcome you to attend her funeral
on Friday 4th. December, 1.30pm, Ipswich Crematorium, Seven Hills, Felixstowe Road,
Nacton, IP10 0FG. Family flowers only. Donations for her nominated charity can be made
c/o Rackhams Funeral Services, Diss.
Don’t forget our first RACE NIGHT is on Friday, 4th December. Doors open at 7pm for the
first race at 7.30pm. £1 admission to include race programme.
“Christmas Carols around the piano”
We would like to invite everyone on Friday, 18th December to join us from 8pm. in the hall
for Christmas Carols around the piano. Mince pies, sausage rolls and mulled wine will be
available and the bar will be open as normal. If you haven’t been in the hall yet or for a while,
this could be a great opportunity to meet up with friends, old and new.
Wilby Village Hall Committee members would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a
peaceful and Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Thank you for your continued efforts and support over the last twelve months and we look

IMPORTANT! CHANGE OF VENUE
Advent Carol Service by Candlelight
6.30 p.m. Sunday, 6th December at St Ethelbert’s Church, Tannington
Please note that due to the current restoration of the window in the south-east
corner of the nave at Brundish Church, the organ has had to be protected against
potential damage by stone dust and is temporarily unable to be used. Although
there is a smaller organ available to us for normal services, it isn’t suitable for
large choral services like Advent. At short notice, we are most indebted to our
friends at Tannington who have saved the day by allowing our Advent service to
take place at St Ethelbert’s on the date above. Brundish’s organ will be available
again for the big Christmas services. The Chantry Singers and Players will be
there as planned. Director of Music, Michael Spencer has picked some beautiful
pieces which The Chantry Singers have been busy rehearsing. The service will be
led by Rector, David Burrell. The start of Advent is such a mellow time of the
year; the “calm before the storm”, some have called it! The bells of this beautiful
and simple little country church will ring out to welcome everyone from our
benefice. Please do come along and join us.
This promises to be a magical evening.
Carols at The Crown 8 p.m. Wednesday, 16th December at The Crown
Now firmly established on the Brundish social calendar is this very enjoyable
evening at our much-loved old pub. As a community, we are very lucky to have a
place to meet friends and have a meal or a drink together, where many places
have lost theirs. Do come along to join in - you don’t have to be good at singing!
Some lubrication will loosen the vocal chords! Don’t miss a great night out.
A Service of Lessons and Carols for the Eve of Christmas
6.30 p.m. Christmas Eve at St. Lawrence’s Church
This age-old candlelit service is now considered to be a very important part of
most villagers’ Christmas celebrations, relaxing our frazzled souls from the hectic
lead-up to the big day. The Chantry Singers will be out in force and our church
will receive its flock, just as it has for nearly a thousand years, to celebrate the
birth of the Holy Child. Please come and fill our church with the wonderful sing-
ing which is now a trademark of our worship. A very warm and festive welcome
awaits you on this most sacred of nights.
Christmas Midnight Communion 11.30 p.m. Christmas Eve at St. Lawrence’s Church
People from all over the benefice will unite in Brundish to celebrate the first
Communion of Christmas, conducted by our Rector, Reverend David Burrell.
The Chantry Singers will be there along with Director of Music, Michael
Spencer. This is an important and uplifting service and whether you are a
communicant or not, you are most welcome to join us.

It’s nearly that time again! A flyer asking you all for any donations of home
produce, cakes, mince pies and raffle/tombola prizes will be distributed around
the village sometime in November. Please do what you can as the fair’s success
depends upon your much appreciated generosity and attendance. All the
traditional stalls and games will be there wrapped up in that special festive
atmosphere for which Brundish is famous. See you there!

Brundish Film Programme – Winter 2015/16
Many thanks to the 21 stalwarts who supported the showing in November
of the very moving film Still Alice.
In December we have a complete change of mood as we present on
Thursday, 10 December The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a further
chapter in the post colonial romp as Sonny Kapoor seeks to expand his hotel
empire whilst keeping his fianceé and his ex-pat residents happy.
Two new arrivals in the form of Richard Gere and Tamsin Greig add further
confusion and delight to the mix. As usual we will be marking the Christmas
season with mulled wine and mince pies as an alternative to our usual fare
(which will remain available).
Do come and join what is always the highlight of our film season and attracts a

We are currently negotiating the film programme for February to May next year
but hope that it will include Suffragette, The Lady in the Van and Spectre.

Room at the inn?
Small charity HOST is seeking friendly people who would like to learn more
about other countries and cultures and share their home life with adult
international students at UK universities.
Young adults from many countries would love to have a short homely break and
discover the real life of this country.
Host Kit Millington-Hore wrote:
“Meeting students from around the world is hugely fulfilling and satisfying.
Watching their pleasure as you introduce them to our ways of living,
particularly over Christmas, is extremely rewarding.”
Visits can be for a day, weekend, or four days at Christmas.
Offering a Christmas invitation to someone who would otherwise be alone on a
University campus can make a big difference.
Invitations are urgently needed from volunteer hosts, no matter their age, or how
far they live from a university.
