Method

• I will Describe characteristics of • Review aerial maps of the area/site• Conduct a field study, take photos and notes• Collect information from the library, Internet

and the “smccsose8” website about the history and possible changes (geomorphic and human) to the area over the last two centuries.

Location Map

Introduction

• Tectonic Plates– 3 types

– Insert pictures to show the different types of plate boundary

– Explain what plates are responsible for in relation to creation or change of landforms

Introduction

• Volcanoes– 3 types

– Insert pictures to show the different types of volcanoes

– Explain what volcanoes are responsible for in relation to creation or change of landforms

Weathering

• Name the different weathering processes• Insert 1 or 2 pictures to show these processes• Explain what weathering is responsible for in relation

to the changing or altering of landforms in the localk area make sure to include photos to illustrate your points

Page 9: St Mary’s Red Hill & Cowley Creek Field Study 2014 By Mr Hassett

• Erosion• Explain the erosion process• Include pictures from the field trip

Page 10: St Mary’s Red Hill & Cowley Creek Field Study 2014 By Mr Hassett

• Human processes• Explain how people change landforms refer to

the changes around the area where we went on our field trip.

• Include some picture from the field trip

Page 11: St Mary’s Red Hill & Cowley Creek Field Study 2014 By Mr Hassett

Photos

• Insert photos from the field trip and label them explaining what each picture is about

Page 12: St Mary’s Red Hill & Cowley Creek Field Study 2014 By Mr Hassett

Table of usage

• Insert a table and list all the ways the area is being used e.g. housing, transport etc

Page 13: St Mary’s Red Hill & Cowley Creek Field Study 2014 By Mr Hassett

Effects of use

• Explain the effect , in having the houses or school etc built here and its impact on the landform. In particular talk about erosion and trying to control the water flowing when it rains

Page 14: St Mary’s Red Hill & Cowley Creek Field Study 2014 By Mr Hassett

Interconnection between use and effect

• Explain how the use of this area, together with the erosion effects, is connected to the living things (people, plants and animals) in the Cairns Inlet and out to sea. Explain how these erosion problems affect more people other than just the ones living and working near St Mary’s. An example would be the affect on the coral and the tourists that visit Cairns to see the reef. You need to explain the connection between this site (St Mary’s and how it is connected to other places)

Interaction between use and effect

• On this slide you need to continue on from the previous slide and now explain what is the result or negative impact in relation to all of this. How does erosion impact on the actual reef or sea grass beds?

Page 16: St Mary’s Red Hill & Cowley Creek Field Study 2014 By Mr Hassett

Management approaches (table)

• List all the ways they manage the flow of water – gutters, drains etc

Page 17: St Mary’s Red Hill & Cowley Creek Field Study 2014 By Mr Hassett

Photos or sketches of management strategies

• Insert photos showing how they are trying to manage, in particular, water flow and erosion

Page 18: St Mary’s Red Hill & Cowley Creek Field Study 2014 By Mr Hassett

Evaluation of approaches

• Are the management approaches they are using good or bad for managing water and preventing erosion. Make sure you explain your answer.

Page 19: St Mary’s Red Hill & Cowley Creek Field Study 2014 By Mr Hassett

Suggested strategies or improvements

• If you have identified areas where there are problems how do you suggest they might fix them. Were there any areas where they were managing the water flow and preventing erosion? Could they use these strategies in other places or would they need something slightly different?

Your question

• You need to answer your question here

Page 21: St Mary’s Red Hill & Cowley Creek Field Study 2014 By Mr Hassett

Cultural connection

• You need to talk about the Aboriginal and/ or the Torres Strait Islander connection to the landforms.
