JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the “precursor” of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John’s basic message: Re-pent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John’s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: “You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory” (Isaiah 49:3). THANK YOU DEACON NORMAN On July 1 Deacon Norman Kutschenreuter will transfer to serve as a deacon from our parish to St. Paul. We thank Deacon Norman for his many years of service to our parish. Aside from assisting with Masses and preaching, Deacon Norman assisted with the RCIA, the Confirma-tion Program, Baptismal Instruction Classes, Marriage Preparation, Marriage Convalidation Workshops, Overseeing Annulments and our Annulment Workshops, and other parish minis-tries. As mentioned in the Mass announcements last weekend, his last Mass at St Matthew will be at 11 a. m. Sunday, June 24th. We will have a reception for him after that Mass this Sunday in the Parish Hall.

Our Parish family rejoices with you as you prepare for this life-long covenant of love. We know that these next months will be filled with many details planning for your wedding day. Attention Future Altar Servers! We will be having training for all of those interested in becoming an Altar Server. The requirements for becoming an Altar Server are as follows: You must be in the 4th grade or higher

• able to follow directions • use good judgement • have completed Altar Server Training • able to serve at a Parish Mass at least one time per month and a desire to serve the Lord and His Church We will have 2 Altar Server Training sessions: Monday, July 23

Saint Vincent de Paul Office Closure

The Saint Vincent de Paul office will be closed beginning Tuesday, June 26th until July 9th.

The office closure will allow our volunteers to have some time off for vacation. We will also have a great deal of necessary preventative maintenance performed during this two week pe-riod. We will reopen at 8:30 AM on July 10th. Please do not drop-off any donations during this time period, because we will not be able to store the items and process them. Construction Update By the time you read this, the new force main (sewer) will be installed. Site work should have begun on the retaining walls, and other grading around the site. The stone wainscot will be underway, as well as the painting of the main gym structure on the outside. LIFE AFTER LOSS Grief can be a very powerful and overwhelming experience that changes your life. Under-standing and compassion from others can lead to healing and rediscovering meaning in a per-son’s life again. “Life After Loss” is a group support program that was designed to help bereaved people better understand the process of grieving and how to live through it in a way that transforms them. It also provides a place for people to share their experience and offer support to one another. St. Matthew will be offering a Life After Loss group beginning Thursday, July 12, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. It will meet at this time for six Thursdays through August 16. The group will be facilitat-ed by Heather Walchar and Bruce A. Orey. The program will be a combination of teaching, discussion, and learning activities. The ses-sions are open to those who have experienced the death of a loved one, and there is no charge for the program. If you would like to know more, you can call Bruce A. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s midsummer day! We have the advantage of celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three “nativity” feasts on our calen-dar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today’s birth of the Baptist. Today’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong tra-ditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a reli-gious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting “St. John’s fires” in the long summer twi-light. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. TUESDAY QUILTING GROUP The ladies of the Tuesday Quilting Group have completed their first service project for the year. They complete two projects per year; They made 25 wheelchair pillows and 27fleece throws for St. Francis Nursing Home. The ladies received a $100.00 donation for the material used for this project from the University United Methodist Church Quilt Guild.

HAIR CUTS FOR SENIORS Haircuts for senior citizens will be available on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM in the Senior Center located in the Parish Hall. The price will be $7.00.

ART GROUP The Senior Center Art Group will continue to meet on Thursday mornings from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM. If you are a senior citizen and like to paint, please consider joining this talented and friendly group of seniors. Or if you would like to, please drop by on a Thursday morning, and visit with this group. You are welcome. The art group is currently in need of an art instructor. If you are 60 years of age and have experience in art instruction and are interested in working with very talented senior artists, contact Georgia at 210 478-5017.

JEWELRY CLASS (For seniors 60 years young or a little older) If you like to be creative and if you like jewelry, this is the place for you to come on Thursday mornings. This class is open to both men and women. Bring your own beads and your own jewelry tools. Meet other creative, talented individuals who share your same interest in jewelry.
