My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
WELCOME DEACON RAJ !!
Please welcome Deacon Raj Rerivera, who will be at most of the Masses this weekend to meet the community. Deacon Raj is a “Transitional Deacon,” which means that he will be ordained a priest sometime in the next year. Until then, he has been assigned to help us here at Saint Matthew’s in order to get more pastoral experience, while he finishes his studies at St. Patrick’s Seminary.
Most of our parishioners are familiar with the role of a Deacon in the life of the Church, since St. Matthew’s has had such great “Permanent Deacons,” like Deacon Jim Shea and Deacon Rafe Brown, who have served here over the years. For those who aren’t familiar with Deacons, here are a few things you may see Deacon Raj doing that you’re used to seeing only a Priest do. While here Deacon Raj will have the opportunity to celebrate baptisms, (Continued on page 2)

witness marriages, and give blessings. During Masses when he assists a Priest or Bishop, he’ll proclaim the Gospel and usually administer the Precious Blood during Holy Communion. A Deacon can also give homilies as well, which Deacon Raj will do at least one a month according to the request of the Seminary program. Please stop to greet Deacon Raj after Mass and take a moment to read this brief biography, which Deacon Raj has prepared to introduce himself to us.

I am a seminarian for the Diocese of Sacramento. I was Ordained to the Transitional Diaconate on June 6, 2015, my first assignment as a deacon was at the small mountain parish of
St. Thomas in Burney, CA. I was born in San Diego, California but grew up in the Bay Area,
mostly in Vallejo, CA. I begun my undergraduate studies as an
engineering student at UC Davis, but after several years of working with computers, I left UC Davis and dedicated my time to ministry.
I entered Mount Angel Seminary in St. Benedict, Oregon in 2008 and in 2011, and completed a double major receiving Bachelor Degrees in
both Philosophy and Literature. I currently study at St. Patrick’s Seminary in
Menlo Park and I am in my fourth and final year of Theology.
Raj Derivera

Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
It has often been said
that it is not the size or nature of the gift which is important; it is the atti-tude in which it is given. It is what is in one’s heart that is important. There are many quotes about this kind of giving, includ-ing that wonderful line in the Prayer of St. Francis, “It is in giving that we re-ceive.”
Jesus makes reference to the importance of giv-ing in today’s Gospel from St. Mark: “Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his re-ward.” Giving a cup of water may not seem sig-
nificant to us, but to God, who sees into our very hearts, it can be of great consequence.
The keys are that the gifts are given out of love, not pity or guilt or because we may be blessed with excess. And they are given in Jesus’ name. Giving, especially of self, is a sign of our commitment to being a disciple of Jesus and as a sign that we truly “Love our neighbor.” Giving in this way is at the nucleus of stewardship. However, it can only be achieved if we have undergone a conversion of heart which leads us to understand that it is not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.
Baptismal Catechesis Prior to the baptism of your infant, parents are required to attend our Baptism class. Please call the Parish office for reservations.
Pláticas Pre bautismales

Sunday September 27 — Philadelphia As Pope Francis goes to visit the imprisoned, please
pray for justice and for true interior freedom for all people. Here is a prayer from the Roman Missal for
those held in captivity:
O God, whose Son humbled himself and took the form of a slave
to redeem the human race from being captive to sin, grant to your servants held in confinement
that they may obtain the freedom you destine to all, for we are your sons and daughters.
Through Christ our Lord.
As Pope Francis celebrates Mass on the Parkway in Philadelphia at the conclusion of the World Meeting
of Families, please join him in prayer. Here is the World Meeting of Families Prayer:
God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior,
you have made us your sons and daughters
in the family of the Church. May your grace and love
help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel.
May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit,
guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer
and to always seek your truth and live in your love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!
