Dear St. Matthew Parishioners, Parents, Alumni, and Friends, Time to let go … Every year around this time, thousands of men and woman across the country experience a unique form of heartache…it’s the bittersweet act of sending a child off to college. I was inspired to write this having conversations with several friends who will be facing the powerful pangs of separation together with other parents as millions of freshman head off to college this fall. “Empty Nest Syndrome” is the name given to a psychological condition that can affect parents around the time that one or more of their children leave home.

Dear St. Matthew Parishioners, Parents, Alumni, and Friends, (cont’d) When the sight of their empty rooms pierce my heart with sadness, may I find comfort in knowing that my children are God’s children too, filled with God’s grace and sheltered by his love. It is time to let go, to stand back and watch as the young leave home and go out into the world on their own.

Bless them, O God, in all their endeavors, in their successes and failures.

Guard them from all harm and evil and make them strong to resist temptation.

Lead them in your paths that they may be the builders of life and not destroy your creation.

Teach them your ways of justice that they may care for the well-being of all and not for their needs

alone.

Guide them in their search for truth that they may praise you in all they do.

Let them trust the love of family to support them in their time of need, to care for their hopes and

dreams, and to love them, no matter what comes. Amen.

Special blessing to all our children, family members, and young alums as they enter this new chapter in their lives (and ours). Blessings, Ann Connelly Admissions Director St Matthew Catholic

Grief Ministry News

Pray For The Departed

Dorothy Vacho

Death is an inevitable event most of us do not want to face, but there are things we can do today (beforehand) that will help our families and loved ones when this reality occurs. To assist with this need, we are sponsoring in St. Timothy three Monday evening presentations on October 10,17 and 24, 2016 between 7:00 - 8:30pm. In the GYM. Each will address a different aspect of these needs that will be faced by our families and loved ones when they are coping with death. This prior planning on our part can help to relieve the stress and grief that they will inevitably experience at that time.

The Topics are as follows: October 10, 2016 “Prior Planning in legal and financial areas to mitigate the grief of loved ones”

October 17, 2016 “Prior Planning for a funeral and burial in the Catholic tradition to mitigate the grief of loved ones”

October 24, 2016 “Walking and surviving the path of Greif”

This is a Free Event! Should you have any questions, please contact Deacon Fred Totah at 650-342-2468 x 20

PARISH MINISTRIES MINISTERIOS PARROQUIALES

Come, O Holy Spirit of the living God, and show us your ways.

Guide our parish discernment of those who are called to the ministry of leadership in

and through the work of the parish pastoral council.

Grant us wisdom to know our gifts. Call us to put those gifts at the service of

your people. Give us zeal and holy courage to respond generously to your invitation. And grant your grace to all in our parish faith com-

munities as they seek to live out the mission of Jesus.

We pray this in his name, who with you and the sustaining Father is one God,

forever and ever. Amen.

Msgr. John Talesfore, Pastor

Pastoral Council Selection Process

Act now to help shape the parish pastoral council. The selection process for the parish pastoral council is participatory. In keeping with the archdiocese guide-lines, One Body, One Mission, there will not be an “election” of pastoral council members; rather a prayerful discernment session will be conducted to “select” the council members. It is important that we discern leaders who are will-ing to invest their time and energy, as well as full commitment, in the important work of planning for the future of our parish. If you feel you would like to take an active role in helping set the direction for the parish, please include your name on the Identifica-tion Form. Or if you think someone you know is ca-pable of carrying out this leadership ministry, please name them on the Identification Form. I ask all in the parish to pray for the guidance of God’s Spirit as we seek to discern the leaders who will help us to vision for the future.

Jubilee Year of Mercy Twenty fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time When religious people complained that Jesus welcomed and ate with sinners, Jesus challenged them to change their image of God. Imagine God as a shepherd, abandoning ninety-nine obedient sheep to seek the stupid one who got lost. Imagine God as a distraught woman (could religious men imagine that?), losing something and turning the house upside down to find it. Imagine God as an uncondi-tionally forgiving father granting an unworthy son an un-deserved feast. Then Jesus added a character whom reli-gious people might imagine, even recognize, all too well. The elder son stayed home; obeyed the father’s will; then exploded with rage and judgment and refused to join his brother’s welcome-home feast. This Jubilee Year of Mercy asks, which half of Jesus’ audience do I belong to? How do I imagine God? How can I become like the searching shep-herd, the sweeping woman, the forgiving father? How else can I expect a welcome to Jesus’ feast of forgiveness?

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

¿Cómo tú te imaginas a Dios? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
