He is a king who conquers by love, not by force - a king who reigns from the cross and wears a crown of mockery and
thorns, not of gems and jewel One of the most perplexing and paradoxical scenes in all of the Gospel narratives is the one which we are invited to contemplate on the Solemnity of Christ the King: Jesus on trial before Pontius Pilate. The King of heaven and earth – the Judge of all mankind – submits himself to the judgment of man. The irony of the interrogation heightens with Pilate’s question: “Are you the King of the Jews?” Throughout his public ministry inaugurating the Kingdom of God, Jesus opposed every semblance of royal ambition. But at this climactic point in time when he is handed over to the forces of the world, he concurs, “You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth” (Jn 18:37). Pontius Pilate’s subsequent question punctuates the trial scene with odious irony: “What is truth?” Truth itself stands before him, but Pilate is blinded from seeing it, or more precisely, from seeing Him. What follows, then, is the blasphemous mockery of the King. He is scourged and dressed in a purple robe. The soldiers strike him repeatedly and hail him king (Jn 19:3). The placard at his crucifixion identifies him as “King of the Jews,” but his Kingdom is not of this world. (Continued on page 2)

a reflexionar en la fiesta de la Solemnidad de Cristo Rey: Jesús juzgado por Poncio Pilato. El Rey del cielo y la tierra, el Juez de toda la humani-dad, se somete a ser juzgado por un hombre. La ironía de la interroga-ción se acrecienta con la pregunta de Pilato: “¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos?”. Durante todo su ministerio público que inauguraba el Reino de Dios, Jesús se opuso a toda apariencia de ambición real. Pero en este punto culminante en el tiempo Una de las escenas más desconcertantes y paradójicas en todos los relatos del Evangelio es en la que se nos invita cuando lo entregan a las fuerzas del mundo, él coincide: “Tú lo has dicho: yo soy Rey. Yo doy testimonio de la verdad, y para esto he nacido y he venido al mundo”. (Jn 18,37)
La pregunta siguiente de Poncio Pilato interrumpe la escena del juicio con una abominable ironía: “¿Y qué es la verdad?”. La verdad misma está ante él, pero Pilato no puede verla, o más precisamente, no puede verlo a Él. Entonces lo que sigue es la burla blasfema al Rey. Lo azotan y le ponen una capa de color rojo púrpura. Los soldados lo golpean una y otra vez, y lo llaman rey (Jn 19,3). El letrero de su crucifixión lo iden-tificaba como “Rey de los Judíos” pero su Reino no es de este mundo.
No resulta sorprendente que el mundo no reconociera el reinado de Jesús. Es un rey que conquista por medio del amor, no por la fuerza; un rey que reina desde la cruz y lleva una corona de burla y espinas, no de gemas ni de joyas.
