INTRODUCTION TO THE LITURGY OF THE SUNDAY Preach the Gospel and practice it. A good leader is not self-seeking, but always has the best interests of his followers at heart. A poor leader

thinks only of himself and what he has to gain from his position of authority. Leaders have the power to guide their followers to destruction or prosperity. Jesus is the model servant-leader, humbling himself and serving all. In the first reading, God sternly warns the priests that their behavior is leading his people astray, and that they must change their ways or risk his wrath. The second reading finds Saint Paul giving thanks that the people to whom he preached have taken the word of God to heart and put it into practice. In the Gospel, Jesus warns the people not to follow their earthly leaders down the path to destruction, but instead to lead lives of humble service to one another.

WELCOME TO THE CELEBRATION OF ENROLLMENT IN EVERGREEN

We welcome John and Mathias preparing to receive First Holy Communion in 2018 to the Celebration of Enrollment in

Jesuit Martyrs Parish in Evergreen! (Sunday – November 05, 2017 during Mass at 11.00 AM)

We have a simple message in today's first reading from the prophet Malachi: A great king am I, says the Lord. There's a dire

warning to the priests: Give glory to my name… [or] your blessing I will make a curse. It seems it is from this very perspective

that Jesus speaks out so aggressively in the Gospel, as he confronts the hypocrisy of the Pharisees. How interesting that he

doesn't dismiss them or question their authority, but warns all of us to go beyond words of faith and to act on what we profess.

Whenever Jesus says “I am” in the Gospels – and he does it a number of times, especially in John – he is making a clear

reference to the First Commandment of the Ten, and to his own divinity. Remember that First Commandment? I am the Lord

your God. You shall have no strange gods before me. It's very easy to dismiss it as hopelessly out of step with the modern

world. We might say there's not a lot of idol worship going on in our culture, at least worship of carved images of strange

deities. But we do have our idols - power, wealth, fame, pleasure, independence. The most insidious and widely embraced

idol, though, is the image we see when we look in a mirror. There is something within us that in subtle ways struggles mightily

with the notion of allowing God to be God: it’s that determined sense that "nobody is going to tell me what to do."

So how do we let God be God; let God be the greatest? One way is through prayer, when we pray the Lord's Prayer and say

"thy will be done." Repeatedly returning to a posture of humbly seeking and following the will of God, no matter how

challenging, no matter how contrary to our own will, is the heart and soul of humbling ourselves as Jesus calls us to. It allows

God to be God. And God is the greatest!

CATHOLIC EDUCATION SUNDAY November 05, 2017

O Christ, our Teacher, You invite Your faithful people to make disciples in Your name and to announce good news to the poor. We thank You for the gift of Catholic schools, where the message of Your life, death and resurrection is proclaimed, Christian community is experienced, service to our brothers and sisters is modeled, and worship of You is cultivated. Increase our zeal for ensuring that all children and families can benefit from a high quality Catholic education, and that Catholic schools grow in their ability to nurture the soul of our nation. REMEMBRANCE DAY - NOVEMBER 11

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Canadians are asked to pause in memory of the thousands of men and women who sacrificed their lives in military service. Every year Canadians pause on November 11 in silence to remember those who died in war and to pray for the victims of aggression and inhumanity throughout the world. This is a day to pray for peace, to consider what we are doing as individuals and as a nation to bring God's peace into the world. This is a day when a believing community should rededicate itself by prayer and action to the ideals Jesus gave us in the Beatitudes. Community Service of Remembrance presented by Royal Canadian Legion in Rocky Mountain House: November 11, 2017 10.30 AM - 01.00 PM West Central High School, 5401 50 Street.

CWL SPUDS N SPLITS NIGHT THANK YOU!

A big thank you to all that helped make the Spuds N Splits a success. The event raised $1,050.00. There is a lot of work that goes into events like this and it would not be possible without the help of so many. These events not only help raise funds to share with our Christian community, but they help bring us together as community. It was loads of fun.

Thanks again everyone from the Catholic Women’s League, St. Matthew Council.

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE LET’S REMEMBER IN PRAYER ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED

Month of November is traditional time to remember in prayer all the faithful departed. Our prayers help them as theirs help us. If you wish to have your loved ones commemorated in our churches during all Masses in November (weekday and weekend Masses), please write down the name or names in the Book of Remembrance (family members, parishioners, friends and neighbors). We will pray for all the faithful departed whose names are written in Book of Remembrance during all the Masses in November.

Catholics and Lutherans mark 500th Anniversary of Reformation during joint Catholic-Lutheran Common

Prayer Service on Monday, Oct. 30, 2017 at 7.00 PM at All Saints Anglican Cathedral in Edmonton.

“It’s more than an analogy; we are a real family,” said Archbishop Richard Smith, who presided alongside his Lutheran counterpart at a service hosted by the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton at All Saints Cathedral. “We are the family of God, a family whose members, sadly, have gone their separate ways over some pretty serious divergence in understanding of the truth, the truth that has been given to us by Christ, left to the Apostles and handed on down through the centuries of the Church.” Bishop Larry Kochendorfer of the Lutheran Synod of Alberta and the Territories agreed. “We haven’t been united as Christ calls us to be,” he said. “In fact, there have been hateful actions, and there has been turmoil and pain within the Church.” Those differences led to centuries of division, war and violence, and the Edmonton prayer service focused on repentance and greater unity among Christians. The local leaders used the same ecumenical liturgy used by Pope Francis and world Lutheran leaders during the Holy Father's historic visit to Sweden last year.

SEEKING TRUTH, GOODNESS AND BEAUTY

This Sunday, November 5, we observe Catholic Education Sunday, a time to give thanks to God for the blessing of Catholic education, and to pray in a special way for all students, teachers, staff, administrators and trustees of our Catholic schools. In their annual message for Catholic Education Sunday, the Bishops of Alberta and the Northwest Territories draw on the teaching of St. Paul (cf Phil 4:8) to focus on the truth, goodness and beauty at the heart of Catholic education. The message is available on our parish website.
