FATHER BILL’S MUSINGS Saints of the Week—Perpetua and Felicity: They were Chris an martyrs who lived during the early persecu on of the Church. Perpetua was a well-educated noble woman; Felicity was her servant. Perpetua’s pagan fa-ther begged her to recant the Faith, but she refused. Felicity gave birth to a daughter just before her martyr-dom. They were killed by the sword in Carthage. They are the patron saints of mothers, expectant mothers, ranchers, and butchers. Their feast day is March 7. Daily Mass a endance during Lent: I encourage our pa-rishioners, especially our families, to a end daily Mass during Lent: 7:30 AM or 5:30 PM. Saint Michael Parish School parents: please consider bringing your children to Mass before school starts. Sacrament of Reconcilia on: Our Lenten Penance Ser-vice will be held at Saint Vincent de Paul Parish on Thurs-day, March 23, 7:00 PM. Parishioner E-Mail Addresses: Courtney recently printed out for me an updated parishioner list that includes phone number, address, and e-mail. We are lacking many families’ e-mail addresses. If you are not receiving weekly e-mail parish updates from us, please e-mail me at [email protected]. We will update our parish web-site with your e-mail. Thank you. First Sunday of Lent: Lent is primarily the me of intense spiritual prepara on for conquering our tempta ons us-ing the means Jesus used during his forty days in the de-sert in prepara on for his public ministry. It is also the

me for renewing our lives for the celebra on of Easter with our Risen Lord who conquered sin and death by his suffering, death and Resurrec on. Today’s readings teach us that we are always tempted by the devil, by the world and by our own selfish interests. So we need to cooperate ac vely with God’s grace to conquer our tempta ons. The Devil’s Timing (March Madness Style): In basketball, things change much more quickly than in football. This is partly because there are three-point shots; partly be-cause of the major effect of last second foul shots; partly because the basketball court is s ll the same size as it’s always been while players are now much taller and big-ger.

The score and the balance of power can change instanta-neously. En re games are played; en re life mes are lived in those last two minutes. Even if a team is down by 20 points at hal ime, it can s ll rally to win. That is why the most nail-bi ng, hair-raising, blood-pressuring moments in sports are the last ten seconds of a neck-and-neck basketball game. Everything comes down to m-ing. Especially in the game of life, ming is everything. Does anyone doubt the devil’s ming when he arrived to challenge Jesus a er he had spent forty days and forty nights of fas ng in the wilderness? Jesus was exhausted, hungry, alone, red, and wobbly. The devil calculated that Jesus would be the perfect vic m. But his ming is o en perfect when he tempts us. Joke of the Week: “I gave them up for Lent”: A Catholic priest who worked in an inner city was walking down an alley one foggy evening on his way back to the rectory. As he rounded the corner, a young man approached him and pointed a knife against his back. “Give me your mon-ey,” the hoodlum mu ered. The priest opened his jacket and reached into his inner pocket to remove his wallet, exposing his clerical collar. “Oh, I’m sorry, Father,” said the young man, “I didn’t see your collar. I can’t take your money.” Trembling from the scare, the priest removed a cigar from his shirt pocket and offered it to the young man. “Here,” he said, “have a cigar.” “Oh no, I can’t do that,” the young man replied, “I gave up smoking for Lent!” Season of Lent: Abs nence from meat is observed by everyone 14 years of age or older. When health or the ability to work is affected, the law does not oblige. All the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday are days of abs -nence. If a person is unable to observe the above regula-

ons due to ill health or other serious reasons, other suit-able forms of self-denial are encouraged. The three pillars of Lenten living: fas ng, prayer, and almsgiving. Readers / Servers for Lenten Evening Masses: Except for Holy Week, we will have evening Masses Mondays through Thursdays in Lent. Although we have enough readers and servers for the evening Masses, we will glad-ly accept other volunteers. Please contact Fr. Bill at [email protected] or call 304-242-1560 ext. 7.
