* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

We have now entered into the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. The Church breaks up the liturgical year into multiple seasons beginning with Advent, the first of two penitential seasons; then Christmas, the shortest season which is followed by the first part of Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time barely gets started before we are into the second penitential season of Lent which lasts forty days and is then

followed by Easter. Once the Easter Season concludes we re-commence Ordinary Time. The colour for Ordinary Time for the use of vestments is green. Green, the colour of Spring, symbolizes hope, life and anticipation. The primary focus of the Gospel readings for Ordinary Time is the three year public ministry of Jesus Christ. This being the case, we might rightly judge the name of the Season to be misleading: there is nothing ordinary in the Life of Christ or in the celebration of the Sacraments. Indeed as we enter into the celebration of the Mass we step out of the ordinary into the truly extra-ordinary. In the original Greek of the New Testament there are two words for time: chronos and kairos. Chronos, from which we get the word chronological, is linear time, one event in succession of another. This word is used 54 times in the New Testament. Kairos, which is used 86 times in the New Testament, may be translated or understood as the appointed time in the purpose of God. Kairos is the time in which God acts. There is a sense of fulfillment in its use: “The Kingdom of God is at hand.” More prosaic translations of kairos would include the “opportune time” and “season,” both of which dovetail with its theological meaning. When we participate in the Mass (as opposed to simply attending Mass) we step out of Chronos and into Kairos. The Season might be more aptly called the Season of Kairos.

WEDNESDAY ADORATION -- adoration has resumed *only on Wednesdays*, from after the 8:30 a.m. Mass until 8 p.m. in the main church. For more information, please contact Rosemary Duffy, 703-256-4468. Friday Family Holy Hour -- start a great tradition this 2021, and join us this Friday, January 22, from 7-8 p.m. There will be two brief meditations followed by generous amounts of quiet time to rest in the Lord. This experience will help you relax after a challenging week and also to prepare for the Sunday liturgy! Parents are ENCOUR-AGED to bring their children but to also help us preserve the quiet as they are able -- please feel free to bring them and don't be embarrassed if they get squirmy! They need Jesus too! ALL are encouraged to bring a friend! Hope to see you this Friday! Parochial Status of Adult Children -- Please note that Adult Children of Registered Families are not automati-cally members of the Parish; and especially if they are no longer living with their parents should register at the Parish in which they live. Adult children who no longer live in the Parish and/or do not practice the Faith cannot use St. Mi-chael’s as a “default” parish to fall back on if they are in need of sponsor certificates or other proofs of belonging to a parish. Frassati Annandale Young Adult Ministry -- Parishion-ers aged 18-35 years old are welcome to join the St. Mi-chael’s Young Adult Ministry! To receive more informa-tion and find out what events we have on the calendar, or to be added to our email list, please email Sandie and Theresa at [email protected] and follow our Facebook page! We look forward to meeting you!

FaithDirect -- Our ministries need your support today. After the uncertainty, unemployment and isolation caused by COVID-19, families in our community will be turning to St. Michael for help in astonishing numbers during the holiday season. We prayerfully request that you consider signing up for eGiving from your computer, smartphone or tablet. You can set up a recurring donation or make a one-time gift. Sign up today by visiting faith.direct/VA409. Thank you for your support of our parish family!

EnCourage -- is a support group for faithful Catholics with same-sex attracted loved ones. What distinguishes the work of EnCourage is its commitment to offer faithful witness to Catholic teachings on sexual morality while addressing the needs of its members with charity and compassion. To this end, the group both professes an orthodox position on the immorality of homosexual acts and respects the human dig-nity of persons who have homosexual feelings.
