Dear parishioners,
The Fourth Sunday of Advent brings us much closer liturgically and scripturally to the celebration of
Christmas. Rather than focusing on Jesus’ second coming or the preparation of the way by St. John the Baptist, we now find ourselves waiting in the Gospel
for the birth of the actual infant Jesus in His first com-ing. The Gospel explains how Jesus, while Son of
God, can also be the son of David, the Messiah. The Virgin Mary’s betrothed, St. Joseph, is initially reluc-
tant to take her into his home, because doing so in-volves the claim that the child to come is his own. We
often think of Joseph assuming that Mary had been with someone else, but this does not have to be the
case – there is something of a tradition that he in fact believed her that her Child was God’s Son, but did not want to claim Him as his own. How could a mere man say that God’s Son was his son? The archangel Gabri-el tells him not to be afraid, that this is God’s will. Je-sus is thus known as – and, by Jewish law, for all in-
tents and purposes is, regardless of biology – Joseph’s son, and is thus a descendent of King David so as to
be the human Messiah.
Jesus fulfills so many of the promises God made the people of Judea, and offers God’s salvation to all of the nations. What do we expect or ask for of God?
How can Jesus fulfill our hopes and desires from God in this holiday season? It is good for us to remember that, whatever we wish for, God in fact wants more
for us. He wants us to share in the very greatest thing there is – His own divine life and love. Jesus, the in-carnate Son of God, is the one who makes this possi-ble. We give praise and thanks to our heavenly Father for this precious gift. May Jesus fill our lives and our homes and help us to do God’s will, knowing that He
will not be outdone in generosity.
Our bulletin at this time is a “double,” encompassing the Fourth Sunday of Advent, Christmas, the Feast of the Holy Family, and the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. Counting Epiphany afterwards, on January 5th, we will have the opportunity (not to mention the
obligation, ahem) to attend Mass five great times in 15 days. I invite everyone to allow God to draw all of
you closer to Him in the joyful mysteries of His Son’s incarnation as a tiny child in our midst. Please check
the bulletin for the times of our two holy days of obli-gation so that you may plan to attend with your fami-
lies.
Please note that our parish offices will be closed Dec. 24th-26th, Dec. 31st, and Jan. 1st.
It’s official – our associate pastor, Fr. Mike Keating, will be departing St. Michael’s on January 10th for a few vacation days, then on the 13th fly to Guatemala
for Spanish language studies until the 3rd of April. We wish Fr. Mike the best in his efforts to learn Spanish so as to minister more effectively to many of our pa-
rishioners.
In Fr. Mike’s absence, I will be joined in serving St. Michael’s by Fr. Joseph Broudou. Fr. Joseph was or-dained a year before Fr. Mike, and thus nine years be-fore me, in 1996 for the Archdiocese of Omaha. He
has been granted leaves of absence from Omaha in the past to discern membership in religious communities, but is currently reintegrating into the archdiocese. He has spent the past half year in Divine Mercy Parish in Schuyler, Nebraska, working to improve his Spanish. Fr. Joseph originally hails from the African nation of Mauritius, and is a native French speaker, though he has ministered effectively in English for many years
as well. I have had very few personal dealings with Fr. Joseph, but he is a good friend to several of my good priest friends, and I understand that he is a very sober, serious, no-nonsense, but kind and solid priest. I look forward to getting to know him better and collaborat-
ing with him during his three months with us. I will let him share more of himself in a bulletin column once
he arrives.
The plan is for Fr. Joseph to alternate English and Spanish Masses with me during his time here, while
taking up many of Fr. Mike’s usual duties. The Arch-diocese will be paying Fr. Joseph’s salary, while St.
Michael’s will continue to pay Fr. Mike’s salary. The parish will have a little bit of an extra burden in that we will cover Fr. Joseph’s board and mileage during his time here, but that will hopefully be a small price to pay for Fr. Mike’s increased Spanish proficiency.
As we begin to celebrate our Christmas season, I look back on a year of many blessings and joys. Fr. Mike
and I thank all of you for your prayers, your donations of time, talent, and treasure to the parish, and your
faith. May God bless you and your loved ones with a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
