FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR
“At this time, when indications have been given to exit out of quarantine, we pray the Lord will grant to His people, all of us, the grace of prudence and obedience to these indications, so that the pandemic does not return.” ~Pope Francis on 4/28/20
Dear Friends in Christ:
In our first reading we hear the words of the Prophet Jeremiah. He was born into a priestly family and experienced a call to the prophetic vocation at an early age. You might say he was a prophet-prodigy! Nevertheless, Jeremiah was a reluctant prophet. His first plea to God in trying to get out of his vocation was that he was just a mere “lad.” But his protestations went unheeded. It seemed from then on, nothing was going to be easy for Jeremiah. Why? Because a prophet is one called to interpret the signs of the times in light of faith in God. A prophet is deeply in touch with the realities of the day and it is their mission to expose that which is contrary to God’s will. Because this is often a challenge to the status–quo and those who benefit from it, the prophet makes many enemies in the course of prophesying. The non-acceptance of Jeremiah’s warnings is demonstrated well in an incident referred to as the “Burning of the Prophet’s Scroll.” Jeremiah had warned the people about threats from the North which resulted from the people’s unfaithfulness. Since he was barred from the Temple, he sent his secretary, Baruch, to read the scroll to the people who were assembled for a fast day. Upon hearing it, some royal officials advised the secretary to take Jeremiah into hiding while the scroll was present-ed to the King as his warnings could have been viewed as high treason. King Jehoiakim was sitting in his luxurious palace before a fire with a drink as the scroll was read. As each few columns were read, he would reach over with his pen knife, slash off the portion that had been read and disdainfully toss it into the fire until the whole scroll was burned. But the Prophet’s warnings materialized when the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar, invaded Judah and took Jehoiakim’s son, who had succeeded him on the throne, into exile in Babylonia. Biblical history holds Jeremiah up as one of the true prophets, as opposed to a false prophet. The true prophets spoke the truth to the people whether they wanted to hear it or not. The false prophets would tell the people what they wanted to hear even if what they needed to hear was the opposite.
It can be tempting for us as individuals or as a people to seek out those who say what we would like to hear as opposed to those who would challenge our thoughts or behavior. One of the most important things in life is to seek the right counsel even when they tell us what we don’t want to hear. There is a commercial that claims “Real friends don’t let friends drive drunk.” Our real friends and best counselors don’t tell us that which we want to hear; rather, they utter the truth. Happy Father’s Day! Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Gregg
THE POLICE OFFICER'S PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL
Saint Michael, heaven's glorious commissioner of police, who once so neatly and successfully cleared God's premises of all its undesirables, look with kindly and professional eyes on your earthly force.
Give us cool heads, stout hearts, and uncanny flair for investigation and wise judgement.
Make us the terror of burglars, the friend of children and law-abiding citizens, kind to strangers, polite to bores, strict with law-breakers and impervious to temptations.
You know, Saint Michael, from your own experiences with the devil that the police officer's lot on earth is not always a happy one; but your sense of duty that so pleased God, your hard knocks that so surprised the devil, and your angelic self-control give us inspiration.
And when we lay down our night sticks, enroll us in your heavenly force, where we will be as proud to guard the throne of God as we have been to guard the city of all the people. Amen.
Our patron saint, Michael the Archangel, is also the patron saint of police officers. Our Fr. Ted is
Chaplain for the Clearwater Police Department and Pinellas County Sheriffs provide our weekend traffic control. In this time of unrest, we think it important
to thank all the good cops that we know for selflessly risking their lives every day for our safety. You are therefore invited to sign Thank You cards for both
police departments in the Narthex after Mass today.

Because all printed material has been removed from the Church due to coronavirus concerns, we are including below the music for today’s liturgy that you would normally find in our Journeysongs hymnal.
You are encouraged to pray these words along with the cantor (rather than sing them) during the pandemic.
ENTRANCE HYMN
Be Not Afraid Bob Dufford SJ
1. You shall cross the barren desert, but you shall not die of thirst.
You shall wander far in safety though you do not know the way. You shall speak your words in foreign lands and all will understand. You shall see the face of God and live.
Refrain Be not afraid. I go before you always. Come, follow me, and I will give you rest.
2. If you pass through raging waters in the sea, you shall not drown. If you walk amid the burning flames, you shall not be harmed. If you stand before the pow’r of hell and death is at your side, know that I am with you through it all.
3. Blessed are your poor, for the kingdom shall be theirs. Blest are you that weep and mourn, for one day you shall laugh. And if wicked tongues insult and hate you all because of me, blessed, blessed are you!

FINAL HYMN
How Can I Keep From Singing ENDLESS SONG
1. My life flows on in endless song above earth’s lamentation.
I hear the real though far-off hymn that hails a new creation. Refrain
No storm can shake my inmost calm, While to that rock I’m clinging. Since Love is Lord of heaven and earth, How can I keep from singing?
2. Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear that music ringing;
it sounds and echoes in my soul; how can I keep from singing?
3. What though the tempest ’round me roar, I hear the truth, it liveth; What though the darkness ’round me close, songs in the night it giveth.
4. When tyrants tremble, sick with fear, and hear their death knells ringing;
when friends rejoice both far and near, how can I keep from singing? 5. The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart, a fountain ever springing.
All things are mine since I am his; how can I keep from singing?

PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS
Shelter Me, O God Bob Hurd
Refrain Shelter me, O God; hide me in the shadow of your wings. You alone are my hope.
1. When my foes surround me, set me high above their reach. Hear when I call your name.
2. As a mother gathers her young beneath her care, gather me into your arms.
3. Though I walk in darkness, through the needle’s eye of death, you will never leave my side.
Text: Based on Psalm 16; Psalm 61; Luke 13:34. Text and music © 1984, Bob Hurd. Published by OCP. All rights reserved. Reprinted under ONE LICENSE #A-735212
COMMUNION SONG
On Eagle’s Wings Michael Joncas
1. You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, who abide in his shadow for life, say to the Lord: “My refuge, my rock in whom I trust!”
Refrain And he will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of his hand.
2. The snare of the fowler will never capture you,
And famine will bring you no fear: under his wings your refuge, his faithfulness your shield.
3. You need not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day; though thousands fall about you, near you it shall not come.
4. For to his angels he’s given a command to guard you in all of your ways; upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.
