Why Go to Mass on Sunday?

Why Sunday? God created seven days in the first two chapters of Scripture; He worked on six of them and rested on the seventh. This rest of God is the origin of the Jewish Sabbath. God rests, and He wants us to enter into His rest. He desires this so much that it was spelled out explicitly in the Ten Commandments that Moses received on Mount Sinai (Ex 20:8-11). Throughout the Old Testament God had a lot more to say about the Sabbath, and the consequences of not keeping it, of not entering into His rest with Him. In the New Testament, the Christians began to keep Sunday, or the Lord’s day (Rev 1:10), as the day of rest. This is the day of resurrection, the first day of the week for Christians.

The importance of Sunday for Christians as a day of rest and worship together was beautifully explained in the Second Vatican Council: “By a tradition handed down from the apostles which took its origin from the very day of Christ's resurrection, the Church celebrates the paschal mystery every eighth day; with good reason this, then, bears the name of the Lord's day or Sunday. For on this day Christ's faithful are bound to come together into one place so that; by hearing the word of God and taking part in the eucharist, they may call to mind the passion, the resurrection and the glorification of the Lord Jesus, and may thank God who ‘has begotten them again, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, unto a living hope’ (1 Pet. 1:3). Hence the Lord's day is the original feast day, and it should be proposed to the piety of the faithful and taught to them so that it may become in fact a day of joy and of freedom from work” (SC 106).

The Acts of the Apostles provides us more than a history of the First Christians - it is the story about the Early Church with the Holy Spirit as the protagonist. Christ did not leave His Apostles alone - He sent the Holy Spirit to guide, instruct and equip them. Enrich and deepen your faith as you learn how the Apostles continued Christ’s mission on earth through the Power of the Holy Spirit.

We Need Your Help! The Muffin People need more ladies and men to join us in collecting food that is about to reach the "Sell By Date" at retail stores such as Lunardi's, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, the three local Safeway Stores, Susie Cakes and Diablo Foods.  It takes twenty four vehicles a week to perform our MINISTRY of service to those in need.  We go in teams of three, four and five vehicles Monday thru Saturday and deliver this wonderful food to four shelters in Oakland who serve the elderly poor, abused or homeless women, poor families with young children in need and a day care center for working families unable to afford normal expensive day care.  You decide how often and what dates fit your schedule.   You can learn more about this MINISTRY by taking a ride with one of our members to see if it fills your desire to be of service to those so much in need. When you see the wonderful food and the urgent need we serve, you can't help but feel motivated and rewarded.  For information or to join, contact Jack Dice at 376-7189.

Join Us for Catechetical Sunday

September 15th, 11am Mass All Faith Formation families are asked to attend this special 11:00 am Mass on September 15th, as we honor the vocation of our Catechists, who will receive a blessing as they begin the Catechetical year. Mass will be followed by a Hot Dog lunch. This is a great opportunity for your children to meet their Catechists and fellow classmates. Attendance at this Mass is considered mandatory and is a beautiful way to begin the school year together. Please stop by the Check In Table before the 11 Mass to retrieve your child's name tag.

We are looking forward to seeing you all there!
