First Sunday of Advent November 27, 2016
Reading I : Isaiah 2:1-5 Let us walk in the light of the Lord!
The prophet Isaiah describes a glorious vision of the arrival of God’s Kingdom.
The event that Isaiah describes, the gathering of people into God’s Kingdom and the beating of swords into
plowshares, refers to a future time of peace and prosperity, similar to the time of David.
This reading urges the people to join in the march toward peace and prosperity by trusting in God!
Reading II : Romans 13:11-14 It is now the hour to awake from your sleep.
With the death and Resurrection of Christ, Paul presents the Christian community with the critical challenge of the
present moment. Paul lists six sins to be avoided in preparation for the end time, or indeed for any time in the life
of the Christian. Paul urges each person to seek the honorable path and imitate the life of Jesus.
Gospel : Matthew 24:37-44 You must be prepared.
This Gospel reading from Matthew focuses on the second coming of Christ.
The images of the two men in the field and the two women grinding meal emphasize the suddenness of Christ’s
coming and the separation that it will bring.
The lesson is: be constantly watchful.
Theme: Waiting, hoping, and preparing.
Breaking Open the Word Suggested text for faith sharing: Today’s 1st Reading from Isaiah
Step One: Listen to the Word As you hear this reading, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? What image
from Isaiah lingers in your memory?
Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: What can you do to be ready for God to come into your heart and your life?
Question for Youth: The Gospel tells us we don’t know when the Son of Man will return. If he were to arrive
today, would you be ready for him? What is one thing you can do during Advent to prepare for his coming?
Question for Adults: As you prepare to re-welcome Christ into your heart while you prepare for Christmas, what
does Isaiah call you to do? What does Isaiah call us as a people to do?
Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:
As a family buy or create an Advent wreath. (You can create one using a foam ring and evergreen branches.
Carve holes in the foam to fit four candles.) As you create or assemble it together, discuss the symbolism of the
Advent wreath:
The circle reminds us of God’s everlasting presence among us.
The green of the evergreen symbolizes God’s promise of eternal life.
The four candles remind us of the weeks of preparation for the coming of Jesus.
The pink of the third candle is a sign of joy. It reminds us of the closeness of the Lord’s coming.
As a family, plan what you will do to be ready for the coming of Jesus. Ask each person to answer this
question: “If we knew that Jesus was coming to our house to stay a few days, what would we do to get ready for
him?”
Make or buy an Advent calendar to help your family prepare for Christmas. (To make one, use small sheets
of scrap paper for each day. You might even use old Christmas cards or wrapping paper cut to size. On each sheet,
draw a picture, find a magazine picture or write a message that will help the family prepare for the coming of
Jesus. Roll each paper into a small scroll and tie it with a ribbon or string. Put the scrolls in a decorated basket and
unroll one each day.)
Plan a family meal for each week of Advent, where you light the Advent wreath and mark the days that have
passed on our journey to Christmas.

Primera Lectura : Isaías 2:1-5 ¡Caminemos a la luz del Señor!
El profeta Isaías describe una visión gloriosa de la llegada del reino de Dios.
El evento que describe Isaías, la reunión de las personas en el reino de Dios y la conversión de las espadas en
arados, se refiere a un tiempo futuro de paz y prosperidad, similar al tiempo de David.
Esta lectura urge a las personas a unirse a la marcha hacia la paz y prosperidad mediante la confianza en Dios.
Segunda Lectura : Romanos 13:11-14 Es hora de despertarnos del sueño.
Con la muerte y resurrección de Cristo, Pablo presenta a la comunidad cristiana el reto crítico del momento
presente. Pablo hace una lista de seis pecados que se deben evitar para prepararse para el fin del mundo o
ciertamente para cualquier momento en la vida del cristiano.
Pablo urge a cada persona que busque un camino honorable e imite la vida de Jesús.
Evangelio : Mateo 24:37-44 Vosotros estad preparados.
Esta lectura del evangelio de Mateo se enfoca en la segunda llegada de Cristo. Las imágenes de los dos hombres
en el campo y de las dos mujeres moliendo los granos enfatiza lo repentino de la llegada de Cristo y la separación
que habrá como consecuencia. La lección es: estar siempre atento.
Tema: Espera, esperanza y preparación.

Paso uno: Escuchar la Palabra Al escuchar esta lectura, ¿qué palabras o frases los impactaron? ¿En esta lectura qué tocó sus corazones? ¿Qué
imagen de Isaías persiste en su memoria?
Paso dos: Ver tu vida Pregunta para los niños: ¿Qué puedes hacer para estar listo para que Dios llegue a tu corazón y a tu vida?
Pregunta para los jóvenes: El Evangelio nos dice que no sabremos cuando el Hijo del Hombre va a regresar. Si el
fuera a llegar hoy, estaríamos listos para el? Cual seria la única cosa que harías durante el Advenimiento para
prepárate para su llegada?
Pregunta para los adultos: Al prepararse para volver a dar la bienvenida a Cristo en su corazón al prepararse para
la Navidad, ¿qué le pide Isaías que haga? ¿Qué nos pide Isaías a las personas que hagamos?
Elijan una de las siguientes actividades como una forma de reflexión sobre las lecturas del domingo:
En familia, compren o creen una corona de Adviento. (Pueden crearla usando un anillo de espuma de
poliuretano y ramas de árboles de hoja perenne. Hagan orificios en el poliuretano para colocar cuatro velas). Al
crearla o ensamblarla, comenten sobre el simbolismo de la corona de Adviento:
El círculo nos recuerda la presencia eterna de Dios entre nosotros
Lo verde de las ramas simboliza la promesa de Dios de la vida eterna.
Las cuatro velas nos recuerdan las semanas de preparación para la llegada de Jesús.
Lo rosado de la tercera vela es una señal de alegría. Nos recuerda la cercanía de la llegada del Señor.
En familia, planifiquen lo que harán para prepararse para la llegada de Jesús. Pidan a cada persona que
responda a esta pregunta: “Si supiéramos que Jesús va a venir a nuestra casa para quedarse por unos días, ¿qué
haríamos para prepararnos para recibirlo?”.
Hagan o compren un calendario de Adviento para ayudar a su familia a prepararse para la Navidad. (Para hacer
uno, usen hojas de papel pequeñas para cada día. Pueden incluso usar tarjetas navideñas viejas o papel para
envolver cortado a la medida. En cada hoja, hagan un dibujo, hallen una fotografía en una revista o escriban un
mensaje que ayude a la familia a prepararse para la llegada de Jesús. Enrollen cada papel formando un pergamino
pequeño y átenlo con una cinta o una cuerda. Pongan los pergaminos en una canasta decorada y desenrollen uno
cada día).
Planifiquen una comida familiar para cada semana de Adviento, en la cual enciendan la corona de Adviento y
marquen los días que han pasado en nuestro trayecto hacia la Navidad.

Advent Penance Service Monday, November 28

Meditation: Revelation 1:1-4; 2:1-5 You have lost the love you had at first. (Revelation 2:4)
Ephesus. AD 90. The tiny Christian community in this fourth
largest city in the Roman Empire has gathered in a church
member’s home for the weekly celebration of the Lord’s
Supper. A ripple of excitement goes around the room as a lector
begins to read out a long pastoral letter that has just arrived—a
letter that we now call the Book of Revelation. Coming from a
revered leader named John, the “prophetic message” opens with
specific words of knowledge for seven churches in Asia Minor.
Ears prick up as the group hears “the church in Ephesus”
addressed first (Revelation 2:1).
It’s painful to picture the Ephesian believers listening to the
assessment of their weaknesses that follows. Maybe they
expected nothing but praise. For forty years, they had labored
patiently. They had suffered hostility from citizens who
worshiped false gods and took pride in the city’s temple to
Artemis. They had stayed on guard against the false teachers.
They had opposed heretics and preserved doctrinal truth. John’s
letter commends them for these accomplishments. But then,
unexpectedly, there comes a sobering reproach: “You have lost
the love you had at first. . . . Repent, and do the works you did at
first” (Revelation 2:4, 5).
What went wrong? Apparently, the Ephesians’ zeal for
orthodoxy came at the expense of love. In a subtle shift of focus,
correcting false beliefs became their chief concern. Vigilant
against doctrinal deviations, the Ephesians seemed to have
slipped into a harsh, fault-finding spirit that created distrust and
division.
Scripture doesn’t say how the Ephesians responded. But their
story invites us to consider whether we are keeping love at the
forefront while also preserving the truth. Our emphasis on love
can protect our unity and our peace—both in our families and in
the Church. Our love can cover “a multitude of sins” among us
(1 Peter 4:8). It can keep us from sounding like “a resounding
gong or a clashing cymbal” when we talk about the truths of our
faith (1 Corinthians 13:1). Ultimately, our love for each other
will convince the world about the truth of Jesus (John 13:35).
May we all learn how to live “the truth in love” (Ephesians
4:15)!
