NCAA Tournament Appearances: St. Norbert has made 18 NCAADivision III Tournament appear-ances, all coming within in the last22 seasons. The Green Knights are31-13-1 all-time in NCAA competi-tion, have reached 12 Frozen Fours,and have won 22 of their last 26NCAA Tournament games. St.Norbert won national champi-onships in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2014and 2018, and was the national run-ner-up in 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2016.The Green Knights are just one ofthree programs in NCAA DivisionIII history to have won consecutivenational championships (UW-Stevens Point 1989-91 andMiddlebury 1995-99 and 2004-06).

Senior forward Tanner Froese,named the Frozen Four’s MostOutstanding Player, led the GreenKnights with 14 goals and 20 assistsfor a team-high 34 points.Sophomore forward DominickSacco had 12 goals and 16 assists for28 points. Freshman forward PeterBates totaled 11 goals and 17 assistsfor 28 points, while freshman for-ward Keegan Milligan had 12 goals

and 13 assists for 25 points. Juniorforward Steven Phillips had ninegoals and 12 assists for 21 points,while junior forward RileyChristensen had six goals and 15assists for 21 points. Junior goaltender T.J. Black was27-3-1 with a 1.44 goals againstaverage and .940 save percentage.Freshman Ryan Bontorin was 0-1with a 1.63 goals against averageand .917 save percentage. St. Norbert was 37-for-166 (22.3percent) on the power play and was118-for-129 (91.5 percent) on thepenalty kill this season.

D is for Defense: St. Norbert finished the seasonwith the No. 1-rated defense inDivision III, allowing just 1.47 goalsper game. Only three times in Division IIIhistory has a team had a scoringdefense for the season under 1.45goals per game. St. Norbert holdsthe Division III record at 1.34 in2007-08. Norwich had a 1.39 markin 2009-10, while St. Norbert had a1.44 ledger in 2013-14. The Green Knights have led theDivision III in scoring defense sixtimes (2007, 2008, 2011, 2014, 2017and 2018). St. Norbert also boated thenation’s top penalty kill at 91.5 per-cent. It is the fourth time the GreenKnights have led the country inpenalty killing, joining 2003, 2008and 2011. St. Norbert outscored its oppo-nents 51-13 during its 12-game win-ning streak to finish the season.

All-American Boys: For the first time, St. Norbert hadthree players named first-team All-America by the American HockeyCoaches Association in the sameseason. Junior goaltender T.J. Black was afirst-team selection for the secondconsecutive season. Senior defense-

man Sean Campbell earned his firstfirst-team honor after being a sec-ond-team choice in 2017. Senior for-ward Tanner Froese’s All-Americahonor was his first. St. Norbert has had a first-teamAHCA All-America choice for 21consecutive seasons - a Division IIIrecord.

Oh Captain My Captain!: Senior forward and captainTanner Froese saved the best forlast, with his performance at theFrozen Four leading to beingnamed the tournament’s MostOutstanding Player. Froese had two goals in the 4-3national semifinal win over Colby,including a key shorthanded goallate in the second period. Froesethen recorded the primary assist onall three goals in the 3-2 double-overtime win over Salve Regina forthe national championship. Froese joins B.J. O’Brien (2010 and2011), David Jacobson (2012) andJoe Perry (2014) as the tournament’sMost Outstanding Players from St.Norbert. The award was reinstitut-ed at the 2009 Frozen Four.

Pung Patter: Junior forward Brad Pungcemented his name into St. Norberthockey history with his goal at 9:48of double overtime to beat SalveRegina 3-2 to claim the GreenKnights’ fifth national champi-onship. Pung, one of eight St. Norbertplayers to play in all 32 games this

Jason Deitsch scored tobeat UW-River Falls 3-2 in a NCHAPeters Cup Playoffs semifinal gameon March 1, 2002 at CornerstoneCommunity Center.

Black Bullets: St. Norbert junior goaltender T.J.Black finished the season second inDivision III in goals against averageat 1.44 and save percentage at .940. Black also set a St. Norbert seasonrecord for goaltender wins at 27.Black surpassed Kyle Jones’ 25 winsin the 2006-07 season. Black also has 12 career shutouts,which is third-most in school histo-ry. Jones had 25 from 2005-08, whileDavid Jacobson posted 20 white-washings from 2011-15.

Steady Study: St. Norbert coach Tim Coghlinhas directed the Green Knights to22 consecutive seasons with at least18 wins, dating back to the 1996-97season. That streak is the longestsuch record in NCAA Division IIIhockey history. Coghlin is one of five coaches inDivision III hockey history haveposted at least 11 consecutive sea-sons with at least 18 wins. Plattsburgh State’s Bob Emeryhad 17 consecutive seasons reach-ing the 18-win plateau from 1990 to2006. Middlebury’s Bill Beaney had15 consecutive seasons with at least18 wins from 1995 to 2010. Oswego State coach Ed Gosekhad a 12-season streak with at least18 wins begun in 2004 snapped in2016 with a 14-11-2 overall record.St. Thomas’ Terry Skrypek had 11

Overtime Observations: St. Norbert’s 3-2 overtime winover Salve Regina on March 24 towin the NCAA Division III champi-onship was its fourth overtime tri-umph this season, matching aschool record set in 2007-08. This season marks the fourthtime the Green Knights have won atleast two overtime games in oneyear. The Green Knights won twoeach in 1995-96 and in 2013-14. The2008, 2014 and 2018 seasons werenational championship years. St. Norbert is now 25-13-47 all-time in overtime games. St. Norbert is 225-22-10 in its last 257games at the Cornerstone CommunityCenter. The Green Knights were anenviable 16-0-1 at home this season,the only blemish a 2-2 tie withManhattanville on Nov. 24. The Green Knights had a 25-gamehome winning streak - the second-longest in NCAA Division III history -snapped with a 2-2 tie to GustavusAdolphus on Nov. 4, 2011. St. Norbertalso owns the NCAA Division IIIrecord with a 36-game home winningstreak set Oct. 25, 2002 to Oct. 29, 2004. In the last 17 seasons, the GreenKnights are a sparkling 236-25-12 atthe Cornerstone, with three losses andone tie coming to national championUW-Superior during the 2001-02 sea-son. Tough After Two: St. Norbert had an 83-game unbeat-en streak when leading after two peri-ods snapped in a 3-2 overtime loss toAdrian on Jan. 26. The Green Knightswere 81-0-2 since the semester break ofthe 2013-14 season when leading aftertwo periods. Under Tim Coghlin, St. Norbert is anastounding 288-2-3 at home when upafter two periods. St. Norbert had a home unbeaten

streak when leading after two periodsof 200 games (197-0-3) before it wassnapped by UW-Stout in a 4-3 over-time loss on Feb. 7, 2009. The GreenKnights also lost 5-4 to Lawrence onDec. 7, 2013 when leading after twoperiods. At home, St. Norbert is 306-3-4 inschool history when leading after twoperiods. The Green Knights' lone otherloss when up after two periods on theirown ice came on Nov. 18, 1989 in a 3-1loss to Augsburg when St. Norbert losta 1-0 lead.

Gimme Five: St. Norbert saw a 273-game unbeat-en streak when scoring at least fivegoals spanning nearly 19 years end in a6-5 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 3,2015. The Green Knights were 266-0-7when scoring five goals since a 7-5 lossto Bemidji State in De Pere on Jan. 12,1996. The Green Knights are 33-0 since thatloss to Stevens Point, making them299-1-7 over their last 307 games whenscoring at least five goals in a game. St. Norbert is 6-29-6 in its last 41games when allowing five goals ormore dating back to the 1996-97 sea-son. The last such win came in a wild8-7 double-overtime win over UMass-Boston on March 25, 2016 at the NCAADivision III Frozen Four in LakePlacid, N.Y. The Green Knights have allowed fivegoals just 28 times in their last 493games. St. Norbert has never allowed 10goals in a game during Tim Coghlin’s747-game tenure.

Western Wonders: The Northern Collegiate Hockey

Association placed a representative inthe NCAA Division III championshipgame 23 out of a possible 35 times. St.Norbert has made nine title gameappearances, coming in 2004, 2006,2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016 and2018. Bemidji State did it twice (1985-86),UW-River Falls three times (1988, '93,'94), UW-Stevens Point six times (1989-93, '98), Mankato State once (1991),UW-Superior four times (1994, '97, '99,2002) and UW-Eau Claire once (2013).NCHA teams have squared off for thenational championship three times(1991 - Stevens Point vs. MankatoState, 1993 - Stevens Point vs. RiverFalls, 1994 - River Falls vs. Superior). UW-Stevens Point (1989, '90, '91, '93),UW-River Falls (1988, '94), BemidjiState (1986), UW-Superior (2002), St.Norbert (2008, ‘11, ‘12, ‘14, ‘18) andUW-Eau Claire (2013) have all wonDivision III national titles while play-ing under the NCHA banner.
