Many of us live in the midst of uncertainty, suffering, and loss, and it can be difficult to find hope that will last. Often, in our desire for peace and joy, we place our hope in the wrong things and only find disappointment. Jesus Christ offers us a hope that does not disap-point. When we place our hope in Him, He walks with us in our loss, helps us endure, redeems it, and makes us come alive.

“Hope Alive” was the theme for Steubenville Live this year. Here’s a brief overview of the focus for Session 3 on Saturday:

By His death and resurrection, Jesus has overcome sin and death.

He is alive and invites us to share in his life. Through the Scripture story of Jesus calling Peter to step out of his boat and walk on water, we want to illustrate Jesus’ call for each of us to keep our eyes fixed on him and hope in him in the midst of fear. Jesus sends his Holy Spirit to give us courage and strength to step out of the boat and hope in him.

A Message from the Pastor...

Dear friends,

Over these last weeks, I’ve found myself entirely too distracted by things beyond my control and not having enough focus on Christ. Whether it’s social media, the constant news coverage, or willful distractions in all their forms - like Peter in the Sunday Gospel a couple weeks back, my gaze is being pulled everywhere but where it needs to be right now.

This needs to change, so this past Saturday – the Feast of Our Lady’s Assumption into Heaven, I started a 54 day Rosary Novena – praying for Our Lady’s interces-sion. I had mentioned this during Masses this past week-end. What I didn’t mention was that during this time, I’m also going on a personal mini Lent, trying to reset. I’ve been fasting by picking back up the diet that I had started during Lent and was doing well with until Covid hit (admittedly it wasn’t as great afterwards).

I’ll continue praying the rosary Novena described for the Country, deliverance from this lousy virus, and the needs of St. Patrick’s, the community, and the diocese.

Finally, I’ll be using only necessary technology over this time the same way I have during Lent. Obvious-ly, this will have no impact on making sure we provide for the continued needs of those unable to attend Mass - streaming will continue from the Parish page. But the point will be to focus more on Christ from Last Saturday’s Feast of the Assumption of Mary to October 7th - the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

I invite you to pray during this time however you can. There isn’t much in our control nowadays, but there’s always recourse in this gift of prayer.

Let me be clear - The Blessed Mother’s interces-sion is powerful. If you pray the Rosary for these 54 days: from now through September 10th praying for your intentions, and September 11th through October 7th giving thanks for that intention (even if it hasn’t been granted yet), you will see why the Church promotes Mary’s prayers on our behalf to Jesus her son.

I’ll be praying for you all, and I’ll see you on Social Media again in October. Pray for one another! Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us.

God Bless, Fr. Jim

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: IS 22:19-23 Thus says the LORD to Shebna, master of the palace: “I will thrust you from your office and pull you down from your station. On that day I will summon my servant Eliakim, son of Hilkiah; I will clothe him with your robe, and gird him with your sash, and give over to him your authority. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. I will place the key of the House of David on Eliakim’s shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut when he shuts, no one shall open. I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot, to be a place of honor for his family.”

Responsorial Psalm: PS 138:1-2,2-3,6,8 Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands.

I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with all my heart,

for you have heard the words of my mouth;

in the presence of the angels I will sing your praise;

I will worship at your holy temple.

I will give thanks to your name,

because of your kindness and your truth:

When I called, you answered me;

you built up strength within me.

The LORD is exalted, yet the lowly he sees, and the proud he knows from afar. Your kindness, O LORD, endures forever; forsake not the work of your hands.

Second Reading: ROM 11:13-15,29-32 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how

unsearchable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor? Or who has given the Lord anything that he may be repaid? For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. Alleluia

Alleluia: Alleluia! Alleluia!

You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Gospel: MT 16:13-20

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present

in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen

Prayer to St. Michael

St. Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle.

Be our protection

against the wickedness

and snares of the devil.

May God rebuke him,

we humbly pray; and do Thou,

O Prince of the Heavenly Host,

by the Power of God, cast into hell

Satan and all the evil spirits

who prowl about the world

seeking the ruin of souls. Amen

The Memorare

REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known

that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help,

or sought thy intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence,

I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come;

before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate,

despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Prayer In Time of Pandemic : O God, whose Only Begotten Son bore the weight of human suffering for our salvation, hear the prayers of your Church for our sick brothers and sisters and deliver us from this time of trial. Open our ears and our hearts to the voice of your Son: Be not afraid, for I am with you always. Bless all doctors and nurses, researchers and public servants; give us the wisdom to do what is right and the faith to endure this hour, that we might gather once again to praise your name in the heart of your Church, delivered from all distress and confident in your mercy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

August 17, 2020 Dear Friends, I hope this letter finds you healthy and enjoying your summer in these difficult times. I am reach-ing out to you today because a group of parishioners has approached me with some ideas that could replace the fundraisers we normally hold each year. The Beer, Brats and Blessings, the Yard and Plant Sale, the Fall Festival and the Turkey Social are all events that help support the financial needs of the parish, accounting for approximately $17,000 in income.

The first event the group would like me to introduce is a Time, Talent and Treasure Auction. Simply put, this would be an online auction of various services and talents our parishioners would be willing to donate. For instance, one parishioner creates beautiful stained glass sun catchers, another cement garden statues they would each be willing to donate. Do you have any specific talent you would consider donating to help our fundraising efforts? Something that you create? Here are just a few ideas:

Are you artistic? Can you donate a treasure you have created? Are you skilled in a trade? Could you donate an hour of services? Could you donate an hour of your time? Yard work, etc. Gift cards are a great way to support local businesses and the parish!

We know that in our community we have an extraordinary amount of generous parishioners, and this is truly a time when we need to put our time and talents to use to help reduce the deficits the parish is facing. The deadline for accepting auction items is September 23rd, and we are planning to begin the auction on September 28th. Please see the attached flyer for more information. Other future fundraisers the group is also considering are a fall presale of mums, a take-out turkey dinner & apple pie sale before Thanksgiving, and a calendar raffle in January. Thank you in advance for all that you do for our parish, and for supporting these fundraisers. Please feel free to contact Meg or Donna if you need more information. God Bless, Fr.
