School and Parish Life in COVID Times It’s not life as usual, but life continues in our school and parish. Pictured are classes at St. Patrick School and the Sunday, October 16th Life Teen Life Night.

  • From the Pastor’s Desk Back in 1955 there was a song by the Platters called The Great Pretender. The opening lyrics are: “Oh yes, I’m the great pretender.” To be a pretender means we are not what we appear to be on the outside and we are trying to hide our real feelings, thoughts, or identity. That thought is in complete contrast to what I prayed in the breviary in morning prayer last Tuesday, the Feast of St. Paul of the Cross: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever; do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teaching.” (Hebrews 7:9) That verse was followed by a response prayer: “On your walls Jerusalem I have set my watchmen to guard you.” As a priest, one of my responsibilities is to be a watchman, helping those I serve to see anything that would weaken their faith or blind them to the goodness of God and His love for them. As Catholics we are not pretenders. We are contenders, asserting our faith by our way of life. We are not out to impose our beliefs on others, but are people who want our beliefs to be respected. After all we have been around for 2,000 years and have seen many political systems come and go. That means living who we are without concern for what others think. We believe in Jesus who “is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” That does not mean we are doomed to a monotonous, rote daily life, but people blessed with the gift of faith in Jesus who is truly the Way, Truth, and Life. Some political leaders portray us as intransigent, meaning we have beliefs that are extreme which we refuse to change or compromise on. The source of those who criticize us is centered around abortion. Life is a gift from God that begins at the moment we are conceived in the womb. Are we not all full of gratitude to our mothers for the gift of their love as they began nurturing us with their very bodies from that initial moment? God bless all mothers. Abortion is evil, it destroys the life of a child and injures the poor women who have them for life. One of the worst examples of being a pretender is Joe Biden, a man who touts being a practicing Catholic. Do not be deceived. Cardinal Burke, a canon lawyer and retired bishop in our country says: “This is not a political statement, I don’t intend to get involved in recommending any candidate for office, but simply to state that a Catholic may not support abortion in any shape or form because it is one of the most grievous sins against human life, and has always been considered to be intrinsically evil and therefore to in any way support the act is a mortal sin…. “ “Joe Biden has not only been actively supporting procured abortion in our country but has announced publicly in his campaign that he intends to make the practice of procured abortion available to everyone in the widest possible form and to repeal the restrictions on this practice which have been put in place. He should not approach to receive Holy Communion because he gives scandal to everyone. Because if someone says ‘well, I’m a devout Catholic’ and at the same time is promoting abortion, it gives the impression to others that it’s acceptable for a Catholic to be in favor of abortion and of course it’s absolutely not acceptable.

It never has been, it never will be.” Let us not be pretenders, but contenders, people who live our Catholic faith joyfully, gratefully, humbly, and lovingly every single day we are alive.

I offer Psalm 139 for your prayerful reflection.

O Lord, you search me and you know me, you know my resting and my rising, you discern my purpose from afar. You mark when I walk or lie down,

all my ways lie open to you.

Before ever a word is on my tongue you know it, O Lord, through and through.

Behind and before you besiege me, your hand ever laid upon me.

Too wonderful for me this knowledge, too high, beyond my reach.

O where can I go from your spirit, or where can I flee from your face?

If I climb the heavens, you are there. If I lie in the grave, you are there.

If I take the wings of the dawn and dwell at the sea's furthest end,

even there your hand would lead me, your right hand would hold me fast.

If I say: "Let the darkness hide me and the light around me be night," even darkness is not dark for you

and the night is as clear as the day.

For it was you who created my being, knit me together in my mother's womb. I thank you for the wonder of my being,

for the wonders of all your creation. Already you knew my soul

my body held no secret from you when I was being fashioned in secret and molded in the depths of the earth.

    Your eyes saw all my actions, they were all of them written in your book;

every one of my days was decreed before one of them came into being.

To me, how mysterious your thoughts, the sum of them not to be numbered!

If I count them, they are more than the sand; to finish, I must be eternal, like you.

O search me, God, and know my heart. O test me and know my thoughts.

See that I follow not the wrong path and lead me in the path of life eternal.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be. Amen.

  • Why am I here? - What's life all about? - What happens when we die? What is this journey in between the event we call “birth” and the one we call “death”? Is the journey taking you somewhere, or are you leading yourself to some kind of destination – a destination that could extend beyond your last breath? What do you want from your life during the in between? The questions are there. And, the answers are too. Take a look at these important questions by watching “The Search,” a seven-part video series, free of charge once you sign up for FORMED. FORMED is an online platform

that offers access to an amazing amount of Catholic content including books, audio talks, movies, documentaries, studies and more. FORMED also includes excellent content for children.

Sign up for FORMED for free at: https://stpatricksmithtown.formed.org and then search for “THE SEARCH.”

The Catholic Ministries Appeal supports our efforts to:

LIVE AND SHARE OUR FAITH by providing support for religious education programs for public school children, faith formation for those receiving the Sacraments, and vocations for the formation of our Priests, Deacons and Lay Leaders

CARE FOR GOD’S PEOPLE through support for the great works of our Parish Outreach programs and Catholic Charities. The Appeal also supports other programs that help us care for God’s people, including: our hospital and prison ministries, Respect Life initiatives, and our Mission in the Dominican Republic.

BUILD GOD’S KINGDOM by supporting programs that reach out to Catholics of all races and backgrounds, celebrate special needs Masses for children and adults, and support vibrant college campus ministry and dynamic youth ministry programs.

Next weekend we will give everyone an opportunity to make a gift - if you have not already done so - to the Catholic Ministries Appeal.

    Thank You!

Giving Made Easier Churches now routinely offer online giving for church donations. There are many reasons for this. Fewer people are using cash and checks. Mass attendance at your home parish is usually interrupted by vacations, business trips, illness, snow storms, etc. And many people find it easier (and greener) to not have to deal with church envelopes.

St. Patrick’s offers several forms of online giving:

    (1) Faith Direct: Signing up for Faith Direct allows you to indicate a weekly contribution amount that is automatically withdrawn from your account. Just go to faithdirect.net or download the Faith Direct app from the App Store. Our Parish code is NY51.

    (2) Our website: You can contribute at any time by going to our website: stpatricksmithtown.org. Just click the “Donate” button at the top right.

    (3) Our Parish App: In addition to its many other features, the OneParish App has a donation page that allows quick and easy one-time or recurring donations. You can download the One Parish App at the App Store.

The holy hour in our modern rat race is necessary for authentic prayer. Our world is one of speed in which intensity of movement is a substitute for lack of purpose; where noise is invoked to drown out the whisperings of conscience; where talk, talk, talk gives the impression that we are doing something when really we are not; where activity kills self-knowledge won by contemplation. - Archbishop Fulton Sheen

SUGGESTIONS FOR THE WEEK ON FORMED

We are a People of Prayer Please continue to say the following prayers each day as we seek God’s

    guidance, strength and courage

Gracious God, we are your people embraced by your love. We thank you for your presence with us throughout all time. Create us anew. Liberate us from that which keeps us from you. Enable us to recreate our world and restore justice. Heal us from every form of sin and violence. Transform us to live your Word more profoundly. Reconcile us so enemies become friends. Awaken us to the sacred; nurture our relationships; enliven our parishes; reunite our families. Fill us with joy to celebrate the fullness of life. Empower us to be a community of love growing in your likeness. Amen.

Thank you Father for the gift of life. Thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus. May my gratitude inspire and sustain me in doing everything I can to respect the lives of all people and to do all in my power to end abortion and everything else that harms, abuses, or threatens human life. Give me the courage and strength to live in your image each day. Amen.

Lord, the plight of our brothers and sisters is deep and the suffering of Christians is severe and frightening. Therefore, we ask you Lord to spare their lives to grant them patience and courage to continue their witness of Christian values with trust and hope. Lord, peace is the foundation of life; Grant us the peace and stability that will enable us to live with each other without fear and anxiety, and with dignity and joy. Amen.

Always be ready to share your faith! It's profound to consider what hangs in the balance when we share our faith with others. Patrick Madrid, in his highly engaging manner, speaks from a lifetime of experience to help Catholics effectively share

the truth about Christ and his Church whenever the opportunity arises.

Oh, how precious time is. Blessed are those who know how to make good use of it. Oh, if only all could understand how precious time is, undoubtedly everyone would do his best to live it out in a praiseworthy manner. - St. Padre Pio

Attention Level 2 Students: For your convenience, copies of the cards on which you write your gospel reflections will be included in the bulletin most Sundays. Feel free to use the form below and to make copies. Your reflection may be dropped into the collection basket as your gift to our parish. (Please provide your first and last name. Only first names will be used in the bulletin.)

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”

    1. Do the Beatitudes challenge your thinking about being blessed? Explain.

    2. When have you been blessed by something you did not initially consider a blessing?

    3. Which Beatitude do you relate to the most? Explain.

Jesus wants us to be peacemakers. Talk about a time when you were a peacemaker.

    Reflections on the Sunday Scriptures

Words of Wisdom from our Level 2 Students COMING SOON . . . . .

A favorite part of our bulletin over the past few years has been the “Words of Wisdom from our Level 2 Students.” Second grade students from our Religious Formation Program and our school, who are preparing to receive their First Holy Communion this year, are asked to read the “Children and Family Reflection” question in the bulletin (see below) and write down their thoughts on cards provided for them (or they may use the one from the bulletin at right). They then drop the cards in the collection basket on Sunday as their contribution to our parish. A good number of their reflections are then published in the bulletin (using first names only). We look forward to hearing from our wise and wonderful Level 2 students!

Whoever confesses his sins ... is already working with God. God indicts your sins; if you also indict them, you are joined with God. Man and sinner are, so to speak, two realities: when you hear 'man' - this is what God has made; when you hear 'sinner' - this is what man himself has made. Destroy what you have made, so that God may save what he has made ... When you begin to abhor what you have made, it is then that your good works are beginning, since you are accusing yourself of your evil works. The beginning of good works is the confession of evil works. You do the truth and come to the light. — The Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1458
