August 23rd, 2016 Term 3, Week 5

Kia ora Whanau ma,

I am sure that by now, many of you are aware of the upcoming ‘Teacher’s Paid Union Meeting’ on Tuesday 13th September. The teaching unions believe that the bulk funding "Global Budget" proposal is the single biggest threat to

quality teaching in many years. Some of the believed effects are that it could drive schools to hire fewer teachers,

increase class sizes, narrow the curriculum and casualise the teaching workforce. This meeting for all Primary & Secondary School Union members starts at 1.30pm and because of this will affect normal school operations. On this day

we ask that you please pick your child up at 1pm. All teachers and support staff will be attending this meeting and at school there will only be a skeleton staff in place to supervise those children that cannot be picked up early. If you do

have any questions or concerns about this day please do not hesitate to contact me here at school.

I have noticed that in the last couple of weeks a number of non-regulation uniform items are being worn to and at school. This includes such items as children wearing sneakers, wrong socks and mufti PE gear. Please support us by

ensuring that your child has the correct uniforms and that they wear these at school. Thank you for your support.

So far we have held two community consultation meetings and it has been fantastic to hear the views of those that

attended. Please take note of the upcoming meetings and if you have not yet attended, come along and ‘Have your say’ as we plan ahead for the future direction of our school.

and if not what could it be?

All parents & caregivers are invited to join us at one

of the meetings, in the school staffroom, for a cup of coffee/ tea to informally talk about and share your ideas about

celebrate all the children who over the years have been

draws of $1000 to win!

Plants for the Gala: Any plant donations for the plant stall are welcome and we are always grateful for any

donations of seed raising mix or potting mix. Even an opened bag that has a little left in it we would love! At

Catholic Character

Kia ora whanau ma,

Yesterday we celebrated Catholic Schools Day with the other schools from the Wairarapa that make up our Catholic family. This year’s theme was ‘Extending the horizons of hope - changing lives’. It was a wonderful morning with the children enjoying a shared liturgy, break time games and activities and finishing with a sharing of the many talents that our schools have. Follow this link to watch some of the highlights. Thanks Mr Day for your great video and of course all of the staff members from all the schools who helped make it a special celebration.

Later in the newsletter you will find a message from Cardinal John Dew who reminds us what we stand for as a Catholic School and the importance of celebrating this.

If you currently have children in the McKenna Syndicate I am sure that you are now all aware that the three classrooms have wonderful new furniture. The updating of the furniture is one part of our journey as we look to implement ‘modern learning practices’ across the school. The furniture is not just more comfortable and colourful but also enables children to have more choice of where to work and learn depending on the task they are doing. Please pop in and have a look when you can and soon we will be upgrading furniture in our two other syndicates.

This week is ‘Bullying Free NZ week’ and teachers will be making reference to this in their classroom programmes. Bullying is a part of society that has no place and is something that we work with the children on and try to develop their understanding of why it is wrong and how it can affect others. Below is our school ‘WITS’ poster that we encourage children to use if they ever do feel uncomfortable or threatened in a situation.

A very valuable resource that you, as parents/ caregivers, may find helpful can be found at www.bullyingfree.nz. Something that I also came across recently was a poster designed by a child which explained their understanding of bullying. It contained the message that:

When someone says or does something unintentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s

RUDE

When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s MEAN

When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they keep doing it – even

when you tell them to stop or show them that you’re upset, that’s BULLYING

Today, syndicate newsletters for Term 2 will be available for all families. These contain useful information for the term ahead and help you to know what learning experiences your child will be taking part in. Please make sure you get the chance to read them.

Finally, it is always great to hear that students who have moved on from St. Patrick’s continue to perform and shine. Congratulations to Taylor, Maia, Kairi, Sian and Boaz who have all been selected in the Wairarapa Year 7 Rep netball team. It was also fantastic to see so many ex-St. Patrick’s students in the Chanel College Cultural Group performing at the Wairarapa Choral Festival held at the end of last week. Ngā mihi o Te Atua

Matharapa Maths Competition 2016

Nine students from the Kildare’s represented the school in the annual inter-schools Matharapa Competition. While the overall title was taken by Douglas Park School this year, our teams performed incredibly well. Charlie Karaitiana won the title of top individual student in round 1. The Paddy’s, made up of Charlie, Jack and Jack O’Dowd were overall winners for round 2. Just when you thought we couldn’t do any better, our all girl team made up of Chelsea, Anna and Renee took away the title of winners for round 3. Our third team, the Shamrocks, saw Travis, Ana and Jemma confidently take on other teams from across the region. An excellent result for the school. Your places in the team were all well-deserved and we all very proud of you.
