Message from the Director of Education

In December, 2011, Eastern School District approved a three-year strategic planning process which centered on developing our schools as caring, professional and purposeful places of learning and excellence. This school report for 2011-2012 highlights the activities of your school and your efforts to achieve your school-based goals, in keeping with the District’s mission and its vision for the future. The information provided is very helpful as we continue to pursue excellence for our District through a planning process which emphasizes continued professional growth and development. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate each school on the success achieved to date as evidenced by this report. I acknowledge, with gratitude, the efforts of our teachers, administrators, support staff, parents and community representatives, particularly through schools councils. By working together, we can achieve the best possible learning environment for our students. I encourage you to dialogue with our stakeholders on this document and on our District objectives. As we move forward with our new Strategic Plan (2011-2014), I look forward to your continued support and cooperation in the achievement of the specific goals and objectives listed in this plan. Message from Principal The 2011 - 12 school year was very busy as the team at St. Paul’s Junior High prepared for the External Review Process. This past year, as a continued part of the School Development process, the school community was involved in collecting and recording data for the External Team. On behalf of the entire Administrative team, I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the entire school development team and the staff for the time and effort that has been invested. Throughout the process, the focus has always remained on the children. As we move into 2012-2013, our school will begin year one of the School Development Cycle. Our focus remains with the students and enabling all to feel included. I also want to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone involved with St. Paul’s Junior High community. As we face the future, your continued support and commitment will help St. Paul’s Junior High work towards the vision and mission of our school. By working together, we will continue to improve. Thank you, Christina Pike Principal, B.A., B.Ed, M. Ed.

Message from School Council

St.Paul's School Council 2011-2012

Christina Pike: Principal Todd Osmond: Teacher Representative Terri-lee Cornick: Teacher Representative Chair: Tammy Hallett Boddie, Community Representative Gerry Puddister, Parent Representative Susan Taite-Beiger, Parent Representative Kimberly Best Janes, Parent Representative Deanna Hann, Parent Representative Joanne Butler, Parent Representative Susan Ryan Goldsworthy, Parent Representative Sheila Greene, Parent Representative Peter Whittle, Parent Representative Jean Harding, Parent Representative Debbie Sheppard, Parent representative Michelle Greene, Parent Representative Larry Daley, Parent Representative

Our council consisted of several new faces this year. Most had already had experience on various school councils.

As in previous years, CRT results were presented, discussed and focused on throughout the year.

A sub-committee was set up of council representatives and other interested parents to further the development of the Multi-purpose field located at the back of the school.

Again this year, we invited the new parents for an informal evening called "Demystification of Junior High" It was presented by the parents on the school council about the social issues that students nay encounter entering junior high. We also had some booths set up around the gym for extra-curriculum booths to be represented. We have found that this gives parents a more informed and relaxed feeling about certain non-academic issues children can encounter. The evening included questions from the floor and a tour around the school. It was very well received by all.

It is the hope that this year, we will focus on additional areas where the council can have an impact.

Key Highlights/Special Projects

Enrichment Math PI Day During the week of March 12-16 students at St. Paul’s Junior High participated in Pi Week activities. Such as a Pi Day Scavenger Hunt, Math Question of the Day, Food Drive (Collecting at least 314 items), and Memorizing the Digits of Pi. Activities were designed to get everyone involved and motivate students to do math. Overall there were a great number of students who participated in each activity and students had fun while doing math. At the end of each day winners from each activity were picked, one from each grade level. As well on Wednesday, March 14th the official Pi Day (3.14) students completed math activities in their math class and were able to win prizes during that class. Science Department 2011-2012 St. Paul’s enjoyed a banner year in the science department with many students participating in science activities beyond the classroom. Events and Activities In September, Grade 7 French Immersion students attended the Brother Brennan Environmental Education Centre for a two-day program. This is a great hands-on opportunity to learn about the Ecosystems unit. Grade 8 students took part in water quality testing on the Virginia River and Virginia Lake during October. Results confirm that water quality in our area continues to be good! On December 1st, Grade 9FI students attended a special live Question and Answer session with Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, organized by the Canadian Space

Page 7: St. Paul’s Junior High School · 2013. 9. 2. · Math PI Day During the week of March 12-16 students at St. Paul’s Junior High participated in Pi Week activities. Such as a Pi

Agency. Students at St. Paul’s and another school in New Brunswick submitted questions in advance, and then were given the opportunity to ask Col. Hadfield those questions live via Skype. Col. Hadfield was in Russia at the time, preparing for his upcoming mission to the International Space Station. Students asked about Col. Hadfield’s inspiration to become an astronaut, his favourite subject in school, and what it feels like to blast off, float around in space and the hard Soyuz landing. This session was a great culminating activity for our recently-finished Space unit in Grade 9. Grade 9 girls all attended a Women in Technology conference at the College of the North Atlantic in May, and came back with a wider view of some of the careers open to them in science and technology. The second provincial All-Science Challenge was held at Memorial University on May 1st. Three Grade 7 students participated in the Challenge, preparing at school under the guidance of Ms. Jean Harding (retired science teacher) and Mr. Ryan Nichols (teaching intern) and then competing against other schools. Participating students were enthusiastic about the experience and are already talking about improving on their performance next year! Student Success at Science Fairs St. Paul's enjoyed one of the largest and most successful school science fairs in recent memory. All Grade 7 students, as well as, a few students from Grade 8 took part, and eighteen students were selected to move on to the regional fair. The Eastern Regional Science and Technology Fair was held on Friday and Saturday, March 29th and 30th . Representing St. Paul's with pride and distinction were Abby Barrett, Kelsea Furlong & Katie Healey, Alex Jeon, Sam Bauer, Megan Spencer & Julia Hudson, Nora Boone, Julia Fitzpatrick, Paul Anderson & Andrew Newhook, Amelia Twells & Annika Bieger, Emily Eagles, Haley Dwyer Cook & Samantha Kao, and Kyle Comerford & Brandon Wilkinson. Honourable mentions were awarded to Julia Fitzpatrick and Amelia Twells and Annika Bieger. Sam Bauer won a bronze medal for his project on spinning tops. Silver medals went to Nora Boone for her project on heating with plastic bottles and to Haley Dwyer Cook and Samantha Kao for their project on dissolving ibuprofen. Megan Spencer and Julia Hudson won a gold medal and the Women in Science and Engineering award for best project by female students in a Junior category for their project on brain dominance. Alex Jeon won the Department of Chemistry Award for the best project in a Junior category with his project on melting ice. We are very proud of all of our students who demonstrate such enthusiasm for science with their participation in school and regional science fair competitions! Innovation Grant St. Paul’s was successful for the second time in an application for the provincial Innovation Grant. This year’s project, titled “Project LEAD” was designed to help students learn about their natural environment from direct exposure as well as from experts in the field. Through a combination of the provincial grant as well as in-kind and school contribution, the school some digital water quality testing equipment and identification guides to flora and fauna.

The benefits of this project will continue for many years, as students use the the water quality testing equipment to carry out long-term studies on the quality of water in Virginia River and Virginia Lake, and the field guides to learn more about the natural environment surrounding the school. Think Green Team Our Think Green Team was active this year making St. Paul’s a greener school, conducting our usual recycling drives. A special initiative this year was that our team participated in the ExxonMobil Water Security and Conservation Fair at the Suncor Energy Fluvarium on March 22nd. Students learned about water quality monitoring, local watersheds, and plastic water bottle reduction initiatives. Students then conducted a week-long plastic water bottle use inventory, and brainstormed about ways to reduce their use in our school. We have ordered two new water bottle filling stations and fountains for our school, and once they have been installed this fall and the Think Green Team carries out an educational campaign, we will re-do the inventory to see if we have reduced the number of plastic water bottles used in our school. Once we have submitted the results from our post-installation inventory, ExxonMobil will provide $1000 toward to cost of the filling stations. School Counselor Report The School Counselor is responsible for providing a diversity of services to students, parents and teachers. It is important to note that the scope of services is both broad and comprehensive and thus cannot be extensively outlined in this report. The following information will give you some insight into the activities of the School Counselor at St. Paul’s Junior High School during the 2011-2012 academic year.

• Provided individual counselling to students in many areas including behavioral, academic, personal, social, and emotional.

• Coordinated the Special Services Department. The Special Services

Department is comprised of the School Counselor, Special Education Teachers, Student Assistants, Speech Language Pathologist, and Educational Psychologist. This department is responsible for programming for all adolescents with special needs. This may include programming in the areas of Learning Disabilities, Language Delays, Neurological Impairments, Physical Disabilities, and Significant Behavioral Issues etc.

• Under the supervision of the School Counselor the Special Services Department

conducted a number of Partial and Comprehensive Educational Assessments which in turn provide valuable information for student programming.

• Consultation with parents and teachers about student behavior and academic

performance is a weekly and often daily service provided by the School Counselor.

• Consultation and referrals were made to outside agencies for students who need

specialized intervention. This included referrals to the Janeway Child Health Care Center, District School, the Justice Department, Child Youth and Family Services, Addictions Services and some Private Agencies.

• Provide professional development opportunities for teachers in the area of

Special Needs. There has been a strong focus on improving our Assistive Technology services within our school. We are proud to acknowledge Ms. Karen Coates who has done an outstanding job in implementing this initiative.

• The School Counselor has implemented a Social Justice Club to help students

develop both intra and inter-personal skills. These students are involved in providing various supports and activities to the students of St. Paul’s. For example, members of the Social Justice Club provided anti-bullying presentations to our feeder schools to discuss Safe and Caring expectations when they come to St. Paul’s.

• Provide transitional programming for adolescents of our feeder schools. This

year we implemented a half-day program that involved Junior High students mentoring grade six students. Both students and parents from our feeder schools said it was a huge success.

• The School Counselor coordinated the Mini-Enrichment program again this

year. Initially, we were provided with 45 seats for our school. We lobbied for more seats and at the end of the program we placed 65 students in the Enrichment program. The response from students and parents was fantastic.

• With the support of Ms. Christina Pike (School Principal) and the Tutoring for

Tuition Program, we implemented an after-school Tutoring program for St. Paul’s. Since its inception the Mathematics Department has offered two additional tutoring sessions during after school hours.

• The School Counselor coordinated the Junior Achievement Program which

provides students with an opportunity for students to understand the importance of entrepreneurship, financial literacy and work readiness. These skills can impact your personal, career and professional development.

• With the help of the teaching staff we provided parents with an opportunity to explore drug preventative strategies that they can use with their children. This session was followed with a drug education session for all students, including the popular MAZE program through Addiction Services and the RNC.

• Coordination of scholarship opportunities such as the Johnsons Horizons

Program.

• Career Oriented initiatives such as a Career Fair for grade nine students and participation in the Women in Skilled Trades seminar. Also, with help of Michelle Park and Kellie Rodgers (Social Studies Department Head), we introduced our students to Career Cruising, an industry-leading online career guidance and planning system. People of all ages use this program to find the right career, explore education and training options, and build their own portfolio. Grade nine boys were also provided an opportunity to explore various Career Clusters through a half-day exploration session developed by Michelle Park and the School Counselor.

• Career Counselling to grade nine students with a focus on Course Selections

for High School. Small group sessions have proven to be highly valuable in helping the grade nine students make informed decisions about their future plans.

• With the assistance of Mr. Lambe (Assistant Principal) students were educated

by individuals from within the community on topics such as Cyber-Bullying and Anti-Bullying in general.

• Twelve students were selected and trained in the “Beyond the Hurt” program

which was developed by the Canadian Red Cross. Special thanks to David Dyer from the Eastern School District who facilitated the training of our students. Thos students then formed the basis for our Social Justice Club.

• In a partnership with our School Council, the School Counselor helped

facilitate a Parent Session entitled “Demystifying Junior High” that focused on the transition of students from Elementary to Junior High. The session was well attended and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

• School Counselor attended a Leadership Conference with students who later

became members of our Social Justice Club. These students are key players in helping our school promote our Safe and Caring school policy.

Basketball Team The grade 9 boys’ basketball team were invited to attend a tournament in Florida. All members travelled to Orlando during the Easter break to take part in this tournament and receive extra training with NWBA members and members of the Orlando Magic team. To paraphrase one student “It was the trip of a lifetime”.

French Trips When the Grade 8 French Immersion students from both the LFI and the EFI streams came together and travelled to Quebec City over the long weekend in May, we saw students transformed! This was a very worthwhile endeavour, as the two streams do not often get the opportunity to interact in a language rich yet informal setting. We, the teachers, marveled at the friendships that came out of spending such a short time together with peers that were formerly mere acquaintances. All tours and activities were conducted in French, with care taken to ensure comprehension for all levels of language learners in the group. Interestingly, students who had not shown confidence in speaking the language in a classroom setting, blossomed in the french milieu! Our guides were experienced and very well informed; we request the same guides every year as we travel with the same company, this being Uniropa, a highly regarded name in the field of student travel. The grant we were awarded from French Programs, enabled us to add activities to the itinerary that we may not have been able to do otherwise, and also to keep the total cost of the trip down for the students and parents. All activities were very worthwhile and much enjoyed by the students. This itinerary has been ‘sculpted’ over the years to optimize student learning while keeping in mind that the ‘entertainment factor’ is also very important for young adolescents. We plan to use the same one in 2013! Breakfast Club We completed a great year, with our KESF Breakfast Club here at St. Paul's. We offered daily, a variety of cereals, breads, bagels, fresh fruit, yogurt, juices and milk, to approximately 150 students. In addition, twice a cycle we provided a hot breakfast. We had approximately 25 student volunteers, and several adult volunteers who helped during the morning, especially during days when we prepared hot meals. We had various fundraising activities during the year, including the Provincial Walk to Breakfast in October, Christmas Quilt ticket sales, Poinsettia orders, and a Spring Fling music concert / dessert /silent auction/ raffle. Through these endeavors, and additional donations of food and money from students and parents, we had almost $4000 on hand to begin the next school year. School revitalization Over the past year, St. Paul’s went through renovations that saw improvements to the grounds, as well as many classrooms were painted. We also through our fundraising efforts, purchased IPADS, as well as, an IPAD cart and Mac Computer. We also purchased our Wireless hardware. Athletics Highlights
