Welcome to God’s House! Most people have heard the Bible Story of

Jonah getting swallowed by a great big fish, and how he miraculously lived to tell about it. What most people don’t know is that the last

chapter of Jonah isn’t very flattering for God’s prophet. That’s where

Jonah throws some tantrums because God showed mercy on the people of Nineveh. They were people Jonah felt didn’t deserve God’s

mercy. Ever have that inner Jonah in you feel that some people don’t

deserve God’s mercy? Let’s learn and grow.

OPENING HYMN – “My God, My Father, Make Me Strong” (468)

CALL TO WORSHIP

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

CONFESSION

M: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of

our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin.

For faithless worrying and selfish pride,

For sins of habit and sins of choice,

For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do,

You should cast me away from your presence forever.

O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.

ABSOLUTION

M: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in

Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant:

I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

M: In the peace of forgiveness let praise the Lord

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

M: Let us pray.

Lord God, you call us to work in your kingdom and leave no one standing idle. Help us to order our

lives by your wisdom and to serve you in willing obedience; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our

Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT / TODAY’S MESSAGE – Jonah 4:1-11

Jonah wanted wicked Nineveh destroyed; in his mind it would only be fair.

But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. 2 He prayed to the LORD, “Isn’t this

what I said, LORD, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I

knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who

relents from sending calamity. 3 Now, LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to

live.” 4 But the LORD replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?” 5 Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in

its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. 6 Then the LORD God provided a leafy plant

and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very

happy about the plant. 7 But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so

that it withered. 8 When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on

Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than

to live.” 9 But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”

“It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.” 10 But the LORD said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or

make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 And should I not have concern for the great

city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell

their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”

EPISTLE – Romans 9:6-16

Is God fair? Is God just? Neither – he’s gracious. Even though his people, Israel, had abandoned him,

he would be merciful and gracious to them. He’s gracious and merciful to us.

For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. 7 Nor because they are his descendants are

they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” 8 In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children

of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring. 9 For this was how the promise was stated:

“At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.”

10 Not only that, but Rebekah’s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac. 11 Yet,

before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad—in order that God’s purpose in

election might stand: 12 not by works but by him who calls—she was told, “The older will serve the

younger.” 13 Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” 14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! 15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on

whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.

VERSE OF THE DAY

M: Alleluia. My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Alleluia.

GOSPEL – Matthew 20:1-16

What is our God like? In reality, God isn’t fair. He doesn’t give us what we deserve - that’s called mercy.

In fact, he gives us what we don’t deserve - that’s called grace. Thank God he isn’t fair!

M: The Gospel according to Matthew chapter 20:

C: Glory be to you, O Lord!

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers

for his vineyard. 2 He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard. 3 “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.

4 He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ 5 So they

went.

“He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. 6 About

five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have

you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’ 7 “‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered.

Page 5: St. Paul’s Lutheran Church - Cudahy, Wisconsin October 4, 2020...Help us to order our lives by your wisdom and to serve you in willing obedience; through Jesus Christ, your Son,

5

“He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’ 8 “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay

them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’ 9 “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10 So

when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also

received a denarius. 11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12 ‘These

who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have

borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’ 13 “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for

a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave

you. 15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am

generous?’ 16 “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

M: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

M: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

M: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them up to the Lord.

M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is good and right so to do.

M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy

Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who has called us to be his

own so that we may live under him in his kingdom and serve him in everlasting righteousness,

innocence, and blessedness. Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise

your holy name and join their glorious song:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (Tune: 19)

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

M: Blessed are you, O Lord of heaven and earth. We praise and thank you for sending your Son, Jesus

Christ, and we remember the great acts of love through which he has ransomed us from sin, death,

and the devil’s power.

By his incarnation, he became one with us.

By his perfect life, he fulfilled your holy will.

By his innocent death, he overcame hell.

By his rising from the grave, he opened heaven.

Invited by your grace and instructed by your Word, we approach your table with repentant and

joyful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ’s body and blood, and preserve us in the true faith until

we feast with him and all his ransomed people in glory everlasting.

C: Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be

done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our

trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever

and ever. Amen.

M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when

he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and

eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it,

all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you

for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of

me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US IN WORSHIP TODAY!

We pray that all who are here today are blessed by the Word of God that you will hear in our lessons, hymns

and message. These are challenging times. We are striving to worship our God in a meaningful and yet safe

way. Thank you for your patience and kindness as we do that. To assist you as you worship ….

• Masks Are Required! Governor Evers has mandated the use of cloth face masks while indoors at a public

facility through the end of September. Therefore, masks are required for in-person worship in accordance with

the state-wide policy. If we see someone not wearing a mask in church, assume they have a condition or

circumstance that makes wearing a mask difficult or dangerous. While some have concerns about this mandate,

it is an opportunity for us to express Christian love to our community and those at risk.

• During the Communion portion of the service, please remain in your pew and participate at the pastor’s direction.

• Offering envelopes can be placed in the offering baskets in the back row of pews as you exit.

• You will be ushered out at the direction of the ushers moving from the back pews to front pews.

• Service folders will not be reused. You may take it home or toss it in a receptacle as you are leave.

Not many congregations get a chance to host a WELS School of Outreach, but St. Paul’s has the

opportunity. The School of Outreach serves congregations of the WELS with planning, assistance and

resources for a congregation’s outreach efforts. People specially trained in the School of Outreach

Program make presentations. Then there are breakout or huddle sessions with a trained advisor to make

personalized plans and strategies for each congregation to assist them in their outreach efforts in their

community.

Would you like to be part of our St. Paul’s Outreach Team? Are you interested in helping our

congregation with an outreach program? Sharing Jesus with others and getting our name out in our

community is one of the most important things a Christian congregation can do. Would you be willing to

learn how we can best carry out the Lord’s Commission to share him with others using our church and

our school? Please contact Pastor Marshall, or Rory Vircks (St. Paul’s Outreach Chairman) if you’re

curious or would like to attend on October 10.
