News & Notes

Houston, we have a Gathering!

When the 2015 Youth Gathering took place in Detroit, Michigan it was the first time our congre-

gation sent youth to one of these events. There were four youth who attended, and two adults. We had a

fantastic time! As we walked out of Ford Field after the Gathering wrapped up, our group of four was

already making plans for the trip to Houston, we had just found out the location! The talk that day was of

a road trip to Houston. Rachel Stephens and I said, “No, flying would be better!” Since the Gathering hap-

pens every three years and since our group was made up of younger youth in 2015, our group really

could plan to attend the next Gathering!

Fast forward to the summer of 2017 and the real work of planning the trip to Houston began!

My goal was for 5 youth to attend, which would mean the number of our youth going to the Gathering

would be higher than the last time. We are sending 8 youth, so our number doubled! On June 27, Pastor

Gerry and Julie Smith will board a plane (because that would be a LONG road trip!) to take these youth to

Houston!

While there, the group will have a day of service where they will be sent out into Houston to

help others. The actual work they will do is not known until the day of- because there needs to be contin-

gency plans due to weather concerns. There will be a day when they gather with everyone from our Dela-

ware-Maryland Synod, this is a day of networking, worship and learning. There will also be a day at the

“interactive center,” which includes many activities to participate in. Each evening everyone will gather

for the “Mass Gatherings.” These events feature various speakers and musicians.

It’s difficult to describe what it feels like to be gathered in a football stadium with over 30,000

youth and their adult leaders for one of these events. When I attended as a youth, it was eye opening and

exciting to see all these people my age who were gathered for the same reason- to grow in our faith! To

attend as an adult even more exciting because you get to see all the young people who are gathered to

grow in their faith! This year, we have more youth than before and different adults who are about to ex-

perience this event!

When we get into the weeds thinking about the future of the church, there are bright spots to

focus on! One of those bright spots is the youth and their passion for growing in faith. Going on one of

these trips is more than just getting in a plane and going away for the week. The youth have worked hard

to raise the money for the trip! With your very generous help in this effort the families sending youth

have been able to keep their costs low. This is much appreciated! We have almost made it to our goal!

Please come to the BBQ and Pie-a-Pastor event on June 10 at 4:00pm, this is our last fundraiser.

It’s also a great time to gather and share in the excitement of the upcoming trip! On June 24 we will have

a Commissioning of all the attendees at the 10:00am worship service! Join me in praying for our youth

and all the others who will be attending the Gathering from June 27-July 1!

For those who are interested in “attending from afar,” the evening Mass Gatherings will be live

streamed at www.elca.org. Information about the streaming will be up when the gathering gets closer!

Pastor Carolyn

President's Message May, 2018

By Erik Domaas

Greetings to all. This has been a month of much activity and accomplishment. And amid this

activity, I continue to encourage all of you to participate in the life of St. Paul's. We have just fin-

ished the Easter season, and before long, we will be trying a new summer schedule. This is an

exciting change- I hope many of you will be able to share in summer worship, when in the past

perhaps the one scheduled service did not fit well with your personal situation. We will even be

using the beautiful pavilion as a worship space.

We had a successful congregational meeting, and after many weeks of seeking new leaders for

Christian Education, as well as Youth and Family, two members were able to see a way to make

this service part of their personal commitment to St. Paul's. Thank you Elizabeth Ohl and Susan

Meoni and welcome to Council! We have a busy summer at St. Paul's planned, and we will need

as many of you as possible to help plan and participate in these various activities.

This month several young adult members graduated from their respective colleges. Next month

several more will graduate from high school, and these milestones are to be commended. Con-

gratulations to you and your families, and I hope that St. Paul's remains in your hearts as your

church home even as your life moves forward. Be sure to come back and visit.

I am writing this month's notes on the eve of Memorial Day. It is also a day of flooding and loss

once again in Ellicott City. We are reminded of the frailty of life, and the sudden change that life

can take with no logical reason. The holiday we hear over and over marks the beginning of sum-

mer, but in truth the day has a much deeper, somber meaning. I close with thoughts and prayers

for any who have lost friends or family while in service to this great nation. And finally, St. Paul's

will help our neighbors in Ellicott City as we are able.

God Bless and I hope to see you on Sunday,

.

Peace,

Erik

Women’s Daily Grace— All the World is a Neighbor! 5/25/2018

The parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10 works like a family of Russian dolls, revealing a

story within another story within yet another. All these stories are about biblical mercy. The stories are so familiar, we fail to register their strangeness. To neighbor someone is to embody the mercy that any given situation demands.

Are we neighbors? Do we show mercy?

In the kingdom of God, compassion trumps purity. The parable prompts readers to ask about the “purity codes” in the world around us. Do groups of people, nations or neighborhoods count as “unclean” or “impure” because of illness or disability, income or color, sexual orientation or workplace? What are the unwritten puri-ty codes in our own time that curb our own exercise of biblical mercy?

For a Christian, all the world’s a neighbor, and “neighboring” one another is the only way to live in the neighborhood. This message is an excerpt of “Story within a story” by Martha Stortz in the March 2018 issue of Gather magazine.

Golden Gathering

For June, I thought that I would

change topics slightly and talk

about the “Golden Gathering” that

was brought to my attention by

Renate Arndt’s donation for the

Archive. (Correct me if I am

wrong.)

October 5th, 1979

The “Golden Gathering” was formed

while Pastor Johannes M. Skarsten

was Pastor at St. Paul’s. Golden

Gathering was a forerunner of our

present “Sr. Fellowship” Group.

Hosted by the Dymek’s (Joe & Cathy

3rd Tuesday of Month)

In the Beginning

The program was designed for

“Golden Agers” (Senior Citizens) at

St. Paul’s and was “partially “ struc-

tured by Dan Leviton’s (PHD) Health

and Development Program at the

University of Maryland and the needs

and activities desired by the Sr. Citi-

zens of St. Paul’s themselves.

Program Philosophy.

The theme of the group was based on

the film titled “Smiles” This filmed

outlined how smiles were accom-

plished through “one-on-one” rela-

tionships. The film was shown on

October 14th at 2:30pm to our

“Luther League” and all those poten-

tial staffers interested in working

with Seniors.

Early Members

Renate Arndt—Coordinator

Elizabeth Schimdt, Glee & Odell Da-

vis, Sara Funkhouser, Cissel Gordon,

Irene Sealing, Monta Dustin, Brenda

B., Shirley, Ethel A., Leila, Bill & Jill

R., Pat Ethel Altman, Ben & Carolyn,

Albert Iager, Irma Iager, Mae,

Edward Miles, Skip, Dr. James Win-

ston Smith and Janet. (Just to name

a few. By no means an all inclusive

list.)

Early Meetings

The group met at St. Paul’s on the 1st

and 3rd Monday’s of the month from

10:30am till 2:30pm as well as in

members homes. Activities were vari-

able and designed to provide a com-

plete program for enhancing mental,

physical, emotional and spiritual

health and wholeness.

Program Features

Exercise to Music, singing old time

favorite songs, wildflower hikes,

learning how to Paint and Draw with

water colors, crafts, and card playing.

Group Trips

Stillridge Herb Farm, New Hamp-

shire Winery, Inner Harbor, Chesa-

peake Model, Brookside Gardens and

picnic areas.

Themes

A good example would be April 22,

1982 as reported in the Howard

County Times with photos by Amie

Siebert. The title of the article was

“Mad Hatters Top it Off” which relat-

ed the outing of the Golden Gather-

ing for Easter where the members

sported their “mad hat” at an event

hosted by Albert and Irene Iager.

Pat Altman wore a tule and chicken-

trimmed basket, Adel Davis chose a

violet-trimmed aluminum pie plate.

Renata Arndt wore a balloon-crested

hat

Welcome to Fulton Sign

If you have happened to look over toward

the Shell Station and the Pottery Station,

you will have undoubtedly noticed a new

addition to our Fulton neighborhood. So I

would like to share with everyone how this

new landmark came into being.

May 2017

One of our long time members Charles

Iager wanted to show that just like

Highlnad, Fulton has much to be proud of

and volunteered to put up a community

sign.

As some of you may know there has been

a Post Office in Fulton since the beginning

of the community. This Post Office was in

what was then “Water’s Store” (now the

Pottery Place )

The community was known as “Water’s

Store” as Richard Waters owned the store

and was the First Postmaster.

Later, Ernest Brady would own the store

and he became the second Postmaster.

His son Albert Brady would follow in his

father’s footsteps and become the Third

Postmaster. Some of you may remember

the place as Brady’s Store and have many

fond memories as I have mentioned be-

fore.

We are most fortunate that we still have

the Post Office and our Fulton zip code as

some time ago there was the thought that

20759 should be absorbed into the sur-

rounding area of Scaggsville or Laurel. So

something appropriate was called for to

commemorate our community.

July 2017

Research was done and Higland’s Com-

munity sign was scoped out. Several po-

tential sign makers were approached and

Duff Signs (suggested by Betty Kerwin)

was chosen. A number of designs were

tried and eventually the design you see

today was put before the planning board.

October 2017

After a visit to the Howard County Court

House, several phone calls and conversa-

tions with members of the Planning Board

a permit was given to erect the sign.

October—December 2017

Duff Signs, searched for suitable materials

and a way to make the concept come to

life.

May 2018

After waiting for suitable weather, the

sign was finally installed. I am grati-

fied to see my Photo Shop drawing,

design and plans come to life and be-

come part of the community after

working on the project with Charles

for a year.

Respectively Submitted,

Kerry Griffin

Property Committee Notes, May, 2018

1. We received a quote for partial change over to Natural Gas from Constellation Energy in May. The council ap-

proved moving forward with “Switch Over”. We expect to have the work start shortly.

2. We have started looking again at replacement of the sign out front. We are planning on a replacement that would

include LED panels that could be programmed remotely. Two members of the Council volunteered to utilize their

contacts to get additional quotes. I also received the names of two other companies from a member of the Congre-

gation

3. Grass mowing continues.

4. We had the air conditioner units for the Church and Parsonage serviced.

5. The downstairs hallway flooded at least two times in the last month due to a gutter issue in the front of the church.

I intend to have the roofer address this issue when the repairs to the Sanctuary Roof are made.

6. The roof to the sanctuary has had some of the slate shingles come off. The roofer who did the Parish Hall roof has

given us two estimates one to repair the roof for approximately $4000 or total replacement at approximately

$40,000. Based on the current financial status of the Capital Campaign my recommendation will be to just repair

the roof at this time, even though the roofer is suggesting we should really consider replacing the 86 year old roof.

7. The lawn mowers have required some repairs.

Thanks, to all those persons who have helped out in the past and also to those who have volunteered to help going for-

ward.

Men’s Brotherhood Notes from May, 2018 Meeting:

1. We discussed the Mulch Project. 2. We discussed this year’s Scholarship. As of the meeting we had received 3 applications but received 2 more applica-

tions after the meeting for a total of 5 applicants this year. 3. We discussed the yard sale results 4. We divided in two groups to answer the LEAD team’s questions. The Men’s Brotherhood is open to all men in the congregation of any age. We meet on the 2nd Saturday of each month for a Breakfast Meeting in the Fellowship Hall at 8:00 am. Anyone with questions on the Brotherhood can contact any of the Officers. Ken Keefer Brotherhood President.

happening!! It may only be baby steps, but we plan to be making full strides in the next cou-

ple months. We welcomed David Shank into the fold bringing with him years of experience

and spirit.

You have seen the banners “flying” in front of the church welcoming one and all to our Lenten

Services and Easter Celebration. But this is not the only way to reach out – we all need to spread the

word to neighbors, friends, even strangers welcoming them to our church. And as we have new peo-

ple arrive, be sure to welcome them into our church body.

Activities that are in the works:

Church Picnic & Fireworks – July 7th

We cordially invite you to join us with your ideas and thoughts that will

energize OUR congregation.
