St. Paul’s Lutheran
October 2018 The Epis le
Hello St. Paul’s and friends,
Every time we come together in worship, at the end of the service there is the special
moment of the benediction. We call upon God to bestow his blessing on his faithful people.
Many times you will hear me give the Aaronic benediction from the Old Testament (Hebrew
Scriptures) - Numbers 6:24-26. This is based on the Lord speaking to Moses to tell his
brother Aaron and his sons to bless the Israelites in this way:
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be
gracious unto you; the Lord look upon you with favor, and give you peace.”
I have been called upon to give blessings on the side of the road, on the phone, beside
hospital beds, in and outside of cars, at police scenes, at meetings, over food, in chapels,
and in church sanctuaries just to name a few places, but the benediction at the end of
worship, leads us out to do our mission of making disciples, in the strength of our Lord
Jesus. Standing with my brothers and sisters in Christ is standing on holy ground and a joy to
experience.
Blessings in Christ Jesus,
Pastor Nancy

Celebrating the Reformation Sunday October 28th Wear something red! Like Luther, we are invited to place our trust in God’s grace made known in Jesus Christ.
That’s where true freedom comes. Jesus urges us to stay in God’s word, to know the truth,
and to be set free. That invitation includes a certain degree of discipline not always associ-
ated with freedom. This gift of freedom does not mean doing whatever we want, whenev-
er we want. After Luther discovered the freedom of God’s grace, he invested the rest of
his life, time and energy sharing that good news with others.
Each day this week, take a few moments to breathe deeply and ponder your freedom in Christ.

STATE OF TEXAS EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE
REGISTRY
Do you or anyone you know need some assistance during times of an emergency event? The state of Texas presents the STEAR program.
The STEAR program is a free registry that provides local
emergency planners and emergency responders with
additional information on the needs in their community.
Texas communities use the registry information in
different ways. Registering yourself in the STEAR registry
DOES NOT guarantee that you will receive a specific
service during an emergency. Available services will vary
by community. For more information on how your
community will use information in the STEAR registry,
contact your local emergency management office.

Have you noticed lately how great the church grounds
look? Chuck Ohm has faithfully cared for all our 3.5 acres
of church property! He comes to the church daily after
work. Here is a list of things he has done:
• Cutting the grass and beautifying the flower beds
• Cutting drainage ditches so our grounds will drain
faster.
• Cleaned the gutters
• Redirected the gutter downspouts for better drainage
away from the church building
• Hauls the trash to the street and picks up trash
around property
• Trims the hedges and trees
• Weed eats and edges
• Handyman work (adjust doors, replace light bulbs)
• Keeps our Church Sign current with coming events
ONGOING MAINTENANCE OF THE CHURCH PROPERTY
• Recalibrated all the thermostats in the west Sunday
School wing, Nursery, Fellowship Hall and Kitchen.
A written procedure has been created.
• The boiler has been recertified by the State.
Everything passed inspection.
• The foundation repair on the East Wing is complete.
Rooms 2,4,5, and 6 have been lifted, repainted, and
refloored
• The air conditioner in the Kitchen has been repaired.

been installed on east Sunday school wing
• The air conditioner in the Fellowship Hall has been
repaired
• There were 31 items on the to-do list for the Church
Workday on September 8th. Only 13 items were

Getting to Know You COLLEEN PETING
I was born April 30, 1928 at home on Frankkie St., in Porter, Indiana.
It was a swell town. We moved to the country for 5 years, then moved
back to Porter where I was raised. My family included 3 boys, 4 girls, and
my blind Grandma Hall. My dad was a farmer at the steel mills in Gary,
Indiana. My mother was a homemaker. She loved to read. Porter is a
small town, so for fun I played with the neighbors. I was also a girl scout.
Ken and I were married July 28, 1945. We had three children: Dennis,
Craig and Kay. I was a homemaker but always considered myself a
professional volunteer. Our family enjoyed fishing and camping. Ken and I rode horses for 15 years with a saddle club in
many states. For seventeen years Ken played with the Texas Trail Blazers in Fort Worth, Texas. We have lived in Beach City
for 18 years and have great neighbors!
We joined St. Paul’s in 2001 shortly after we moved to now Beach City, TX. St. Paul’s is a friendly place. It has a great senior
program (the Golden Group). I also enjoy the music, Sunday School, and the Prayer Shawl Ministry. I have two favorite
hymns: “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “My Faith Looks up to Thee”.
KEN PETING
I was born April 20, 1927 at 109 John Street in La Porte, Indiana. I grew up in the La Porte area then moved to Chesterton in
1939. My dad was a machinist and my mom was an entertainer. As a kid for fun, I spent the summers on my uncle Leo’s farm.
After being discharged from the Air Corp in 1946, I worked as a grower in Kabors Green House. I rode a bicycle to work. I also
worked as a John Deere mechanic then as a plant manager at La Porte Plastic Corp for 21 years. We moved to Saginaw, TX
where I worked in food service equipment sales.
I’ve played music and entertained most of my life. I enjoy fishing and horseback riding. For 37 years I was the volunteer Fire
Chief in Kingsford Heights, Indiana and 14 years as a volunteer of the Sheriff’s Posse in La Porte County, Indiana.
My favorite thing about St. Paul’s is the Music Department and my favorite hymn is “Amazing Grace”.

Women of the ELCA News The Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast Synodical Convention Women of the ELCA was
held at House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Houston Friday evening and
Saturday September 14-15, 2018.
Attending from St. Paul’s was pastor Nancy, who presented the devotion and
closing prayer Friday evening. She also served as convention Chaplain. Also
attending was Kim Holle who serves on the Board, Rosie Haas as Delegate,
Beverly Tomsic, Historian of our Synod, Michelle Johnston and Dorothy
Johnston. Beverly and Michelle took pictures throughout the convention.
Friday evening fellowship reception included refreshments, music and a basic
card making presentation. The evening was absolutely great. We could have
listened to the Space City Sound men’s group sing for a long time and the card
presentation was very interesting coming from a real card making pro.
Saturday morning began with registration, breakfast, and time to view
displays and silent auction items.
The day proceeded with opening of the Convention, business meeting, work-
shops with great speakers and a delicious lunch. The afternoon continued
with more workshops of your choice which included topics on:
• Human Trafficking
• Women of the ELCA in Hawaii, led by Keala Simoes who flew in from
Hawaii for the Convention
• Grace of Earth
• The Gift of Years— Growing Gracefully
• Family Promise of Clear Creek
Rev. Michael Rinehart, Bishop of the Texas/Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod also
found time to stop in and talked briefly.
Door prizes were given and silent auction closed and completed.
The Convention closed with worship and communion.
