I am ready for the nights to be cooler and the days shorter. I am ready for high school football—Carl’s a big fan so I go along with him. I am ready for the grass to stop growing. I’m also ready for the leaves on the trees to turnbut not to fall. I want them just to look pretty for a while. Of course I’m reminded that Fall is a busy time for the church. There’s Rally Day and the Chicken Dinner in September; a Congregational meeting in Octoberthe 23 rd ; and before we know it, it’s November already. I better stop there. I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself. I need a little time to reflect on the summer and appreciate all the things we’ve accomplished—welcoming the Emmaus Choirs, they practice at church on Tuesday afternoons from 3:45-4:45pm; Vacation Bible School was a huge success this summer; the Heritage Cluster pulpit exchange was something new and exciting; and of course our mission weekend in August, just to name a few. I want to focus for a second on the mission weekend. So much about it seemed hopeful to me. I was impressed by the fact that we were willing and able to be a “live-streaming” sight for the main mission gathering that was held in Kansas City. (Many thanks to Cathie Schoppenhorst, Brenda Daniels, and Amy Lange for helping with and setting up the “live-stream”). A total of seventeen people representing St. Paul’s-Marthasville, Immanuels-Holstein, Ebenezer-Augusta, Zion-Union, Friedens Peace-New Melle, and Faith-Wentzville gathered at our church on Saturday, August 20 th , to listen and watch reports from our mission partners in the Holy Land. I was impressed with what we heard during the “live-streaming.” We heard reports from two young Palestinian womenChristians living in territory occupied by and under the control of Israel. What impressed me about these young women was their commitment to the Christian faith. They told us they were not just Christians by heritage, going to church because their parents and grandparents did, but they also were Christians by choice. In other words, they have made a conscious decision to be an active part of the church, even though Christians in Palestine are a minority of only 2% of the population. Furthermore, they were making a decision to remain in Palestine, even though life in another country might be easier for them. They were convinced that a Christian presence is needed in the Holy Land, and they want to be a part of that presence. WOW! Young people deciding to be a part of the church, even though that decision runs against the odds and against the popular culture was really a sign of hope for me. I was also impressed by what I heard on Sunday morning, August 21st. Tyler Reeve, a Global Missionary Intern, spoke about his experiences with the church in Morocco. If you remember, Tyler was assigned to the Evangelical Church of Morocco. It is a church that is experiencing quite a transition and transformation. Begun by Europeans, the congregation now consists mainly of Africans, many displaced by war, persecution, and poverty. That is not the only change, however. Most of those coming to the church come from a variety and diversity of Christian traditions. There are Methodists, Lutherans, Pentecostals, charismatics, etc.all a part of this church. Tyler told us it is an interesting congregation. Since it is the only church in the town, all those attending, despite their racial, cultural, and theological differences, if they want to be Christians, and all of them do, then they have to get along. No matter what the controversy or issue of the day, no one gets mad and leaves. Instead they all have made a decision to work through their issues and stay together. In that sense I feel like the church in Morocco is a peak into what God intends the church to bediverse, loving, gracious, forgiving, kind. I also want to add, young, energetic, committed, and full of the Spirit of Jesus. It gave me a lot of hope for the future. As you can see, summer at St. Paul’s was a very special and hope-filled season. I can’t wait to see what Fall will bring. Many Blessings, Pastor Donna

Seeking to Know, Grow In, and Show the Ways of Jesus

Letter from the Pastor

I am ready for Fall. I am ready for the nights to be cooler and the days shorter. I am ready for high school football—Carl’s a big fan so I go along with him. I am ready for the grass to stop growing. I’m also ready for the leaves on the trees to turn—but not to fall. I want them just to look pretty for a while. Of course I’m reminded that Fall is a busy time for the church. There’s Rally Day and the Chicken Dinner in September; a Congregational meeting in October—the 23rd; and before we know it, it’s November already. September Extra Step – Neighbors In Need Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the UCC that

supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the U.S. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM). Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC’s

Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants. Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to churches and organizations

doing justice work in their communities. These grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to community organizing and advocacy to address systemic injustice. Funding is provided through

donations to the Neighbors in Need offering.
