My dear Parishioners,
What a blessing for us that during the season of Advent we have two special liturgical events honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of Christ and our mother. We have celebrated the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, and we will observe the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas this Wednesday, December 12 to honor our mother who came to bring hope to all God’s children especially the little ones, the poor and the oppressed. May our love and reverence we give Mary reflect our imitation of Jesus’ intimate relationship with her. I encourage you to join the Hispanic community in celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe Festivities on Wednesday, December 12 beginning at 6:00pm and the Mass at 7:00pm to be presided by Bishop Alex Salazar, Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles. Please come as a community.
In my last week’s Pastor’s corner, I shared with you points for consideration to learn more about the devotion to the Eucharistic Adoration. Why Eucharistic Adoration? The Church in Lanciano, as mentioned earlier, has been a popular place for pilgrimage since the miraculous elements are still on display. Believers come from all over the world to pray before the Eucharistic miracle and they come because they want to be close to Jesus and taste His unconditional love. They want to be reminded of what Jesus did for us on the cross. They want to be healed and to have their prayers answered. They want to hear what the Holy Spirit might have to say to them.
But we don’t have to go to Lanciano, Italy or other places where similar miracles have occurred – at least not if we just want to be in Jesus’ presence. He is present in our own churches. And what is even better, He who is present wants to make Himself known to us!
These Eucharistic miracles, and the devotions that have sprung up around them show us that we don’t have to limit ourselves to the Mass if we want to experience Jesus in this most intimate way. St. Pope John Paul II urged that the
“worship given to the Trinity must fill our churches outside of the timetable of Masses.” He went on to say that “adoration of Christ in this sacrament of love must find expression in the various forms of Eucharistic devotion.” He also asks each one of us to be generous with our time in going to meet Jesus in adoration and in contemplation that is full of faith.
Likewise, St. Alphonsus Liguori, an 18th century saint, conveyed his experience of Eucharistic adoration
when he wrote: “It is sweet to everyone to be in the company of a dear friend. Shall we not find it sweet, in this valley of tears, to remain in the company of the best friend we have, who can do us every kind of good, who loves us with the most tender affection and therefore dwells always with us? Behold, in the Blessed Sacrament we can converse at pleasure with Jesus, we can open our hearts to Him, we can lay our wants before Him, and we can ask Him for His graces. In a word, in this sacrament we can treat with the king of heaven, in all confidence and without restraint” (Visits to the Blessed Sacrament, 19).
In the gospel of John (1:45-46,49) we find the conversation between the apostle Philip and Nathanael, when Philip invited Nathanael to meet Jesus about whom Moses and the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph of Nazareth. Then Nathanael asked “Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip replied simply, “Come and see.” Nathanael did just that, and within the first few moments of his conversation with Jesus, he declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
My friends, what happened to Nathanael can happen to us. When we “come and see” Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, He will convince us that He is the Son of God, that He is our Savior, and that He is our Lord. The same Jesus who changed Nathanael can change our lives as we spend time in His presence. It is good to know that God will bless us if we just show up and sit passively before Him, but there is so much more available to us than a general blessing from God. As was said in my last week’s article, God loves it when we

I remember growing up in Catholic school and having to make construction paper Advent wreaths every single year! The little yellow flames would be cut out and held until each new candle was lit. Great idea, except for the fact that the chance you could find the flames greatly diminished as each week passed. I will bet over 50% of the wreaths
never received a 4th flame! Of course by then, most kids in elementary school had moved on to Christmas. Christmas was not a day. It was an entire experience of vacation from school.
You may or may not have an Advent wreath in your home or office, but those flames are rather insignificant to the flame that should be burning in our hearts during this season. How are you finding ways to light your fire? How are you preparing the way for Christ to come into your life and the lives of those around you in a more profound way?
The ritual of an Advent wreath is a good idea for anyone. But don't think that your preparations are done simply because you have one. You are called to be a flame to others during this season, reminding them of why we
celebrate this time at all. Each person is a candle to be lit, and you have the gifts, given to you by God, to light them. At Christmas, you want God to look at you and see all the light generated by those He lit through you. Now is the time. Don't wait until Advent is almost over. You might not be able to find your own flames if you wait too long.

Mass is now celebrated here at Saint
Peter Claver every Saturday morning
at 7:30am in the church! What a
great way to start your weekend!
You may have noticed that the missals for the new
liturgical year are here. In an effort to extend the life of the missals and missal covers, we ask that you replace the missals in an upright position when returning them to the
pew or chair pockets after Mass, making them available for the next person attending Mass. We also ask
that Missals not be removed from the church. Thank you!
use our intellect and logic. He loves it even more when we use our intellect in prayer holding fast to the truths of Christ’s presence and telling ourselves to expect Jesus to touch us and teach us. Jesus promised that all who see Him as the Son of God and believe in Him may have eternal life. That active belief is what will bring us into contact with Jesus. It will open the floodgates of His blessing and His love for us. So, when we go to visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, let us ask Him to raise up our human logic and fill it with the logic of divine love. Let us ask Him to reveal Himself to us, and let us listen for His still, small voice in our heart. After all, prayer is conversation with God – conversation with a God who loves to talk with us and to embrace us with His love.
Please know that we have Eucharistic adoration 24 hours inside the Blessed Sacrament chapel every day from Monday, 8:00 o’clock in the morning to Saturday, ten minutes before the 7:30 a.m. Mass. Please consider spending an hour with Jesus, the King of kings and the Lord of lords, and give Him your commitment by choosing an hour slot any day once a week. When you are ready to commit for an hour, please submit the completed commitment form to the Rectory Office or drop it into the collection basket at the Sunday Mass. Thank you for your love of God.
Peace, Fr. Riz
Did you know that the title “Mother of God” (Theotokos)
is principally Christological declaring that Jesus Christ is True God and True Man?
Come, rediscover and reflect on the role of the Virgin Mary
in the plan of salvation. Mother, teach us to prepare
well for the “coming” of Jesus.

"In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar...and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee...and Lysanias was tetrach of?" Did you need to pinch yourself awake during the first
few lines of this Sunday's Gospel? John the Baptist received quite a prelude today as Luke described the religious and political leadership of the time period. Scripture is divinely inspired, and we believe that
everything that made it into the Bible is there for a reason. These lines remind us of an important truth. The Christmas
story isn't a fairy tale or nursery rhyme. It's not a parable we say to give meaning to the holiday. At Christmas, God's presence is made tangible
in a precise moment in time. The birth of Christ is a historical event. As precursor to Jesus' preaching, the ministry of John the Baptist is also a historical event.
"Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." John's call to repentance and the forgiveness of sins
happened in a particular time and place. But that does not mean it is limited to first century Palestine! God continues
to move in our daily lives. What we hear in today's Gospel - and what we anticipate at Christmas - occurs in our daily lives. God works in concrete ways in time and space. He
did that 2,000 years ago, and He continues to do so today!
This Sunday, examine your own Christmas preparations. Is there anything you need to repent of before the Christmas
season? Are there low points in your life, valleys to "be filled" by the love of God? Are their mountainous obstacles in your spiritual life? How can they be "made low"? Are you
making decisions that have moved you away from God? This Advent season is the time for them to "be made
straight and ? made smooth." Prepare the way in your
heart for Christ today!

Practice situational awareness as part of your holiday travel plans - At Christmastime, families
come together to spend this blessed season surrounded by their loved ones, and for many
families, this involves some travel. Parents with young children who are hitting the roads or the
airways should be practicing situational awareness to ensure their children’s safety. Situational
awareness means staying alert and knowing what’s going on around you. Keep an eye out for
suspicious activity, and know where your family members are at all times. Don’t allow yourself to become distracted by your phone or other electronics—it only takes a minute for a child
to disappear from your eyesight. For more holiday travel tips, visit
