THE WORD OF GOD

Introit Nunc scio vere Anglican chant: H. Aldrich

Now I know of a surety that the Lord hath sent his angel: and hath delivered me from the

hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. O Lord, thou hast

searched me out and known me: thou knowest my down-sitting and mine uprising.

Gloria in Excelsis (sung by the Choir in Latin) Missa “Tu es Petrus”

G. P. da Palestrina (1525–1594)

Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise

thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy

great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the

The Collect of the Day

Priest: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Priest: Let us pray.

Almighty God, whose blessed apostles Peter and Paul glorified you by their

martyrdom: Grant that your Church, instructed by their teaching and

example, and knit together in unity by your Spirit, may ever stand firm upon

the one foundation, which is Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns

with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

People: Amen.

The Lessons

Lector: A Reading from The Book of Proverbs. (1: 20-33) sit

Wisdom cries out in the street; in the squares she raises her voice. At the busiest

corner she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: “How long, O

simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their

scoffing and fools hate knowledge? Give heed to my reproof; I will pour out my

thoughts to you; I will make my words known to you. Because I have called and

you refused, have stretched out my hand and no one heeded, and because you

have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, I also will laugh

at your calamity; I will mock when panic strikes you, when panic strikes you like

a storm, and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish

come upon you. Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek

me diligently, but will not find me. Because they hated knowledge and did not

choose the fear of the Lord, would have none of my counsel, and despised all my

reproof, therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way and be sated with their own

devices. For waywardness kills the simple, and the complacency of fools destroys

them; but those who listen to me will be secure and will live at ease, without

dread of disaster.”

The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 19

1 The heavens declare the glory of God,

and the firmament shows his handiwork.

2 One day tells its tale to another,

and one night imparts knowledge to another.

3 Although they have no words or language,

and their voices are not heard,

4 Their sound has gone out into all lands,

and their message to the ends of the world.

5 In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun;

it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber;

it rejoices like a champion to run its course.

6 It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens

and runs about to the end of it again;

nothing is hidden from its burning heat.

7 The law of the Lord is perfect

and revives the soul;

the testimony of the Lord is sure

and gives wisdom to the innocent.

8 The statutes of the Lord are just

and rejoice the heart;

the commandment of the Lord is clear

and gives light to the eyes.

9 The fear of the Lord is clean

and endures for ever;

the judgments of the Lord are true

and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold,

more than much fine gold,

sweeter far than honey,

than honey in the comb.

11 By them also is your servant enlightened,

and in keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can tell how often he offends?

cleanse me from my secret faults.

13 Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins;

let them not get dominion over me;

then shall I be whole and sound,

and innocent of a great offense.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my

heart be acceptable in your sight,

O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.

All: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Priest: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

(8: 27-38)

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the

way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” And they answered

him, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”

He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are

the Messiah.” And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. Then he

began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be

rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after

three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and

began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter

and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine

things but on human things.” He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to

them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up

their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and

those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.

For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed,

what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of

my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will

also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

Holy God, we pray for all your people, baptized in the name of Christ. Heal

our divisions, and give us one mind in Christ. For this we pray to you, O

Lord:

People: Lord, have mercy.

Lector: Stir up your church, including the Anglican Communion and Episcopal

Church, Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Michael, our Presiding Bishop;

Wayne, our Bishop; Luke and Kelly, our clergy; our parish staff; and this

congregation. By your Spirit, help us make the power of the cross known to

all, that people everywhere may see your great light. For this we pray to

you, O Lord:

People: Lord, have mercy.

Lector: Lift from all people the burdens of poverty, war and injustice. Break every

rod of oppression throughout the earth. For this we pray to you, O Lord:

People: Lord, have mercy.

Lector: Guide those who make and execute our laws, and those who maintain our

safety, that all people may know their worth as your creation. For this we

pray to you, O Lord:

People: Lord, have mercy.

Lector: Strengthen us to care for the poor, the imprisoned, the victims of natural

disasters, and all who suffer. Open our hands and hearts to embrace all who

are in need, especially the people served by our ministry partners: Beyond

Housing, Episcopal City Mission, The Haven of Grace, and Bravely

(formerly Magdalene St. Louis). For this we pray to you, O Lord:

People: Lord, have mercy.

Lector: Let all who suffer from sickness of body, mind, or spirit be touched by your

healing grace and love, remembering especially Bryan Miller, Michael

Montgomery, Sue O’Brien and Frank Rassieur. For this we pray to you, O

Lord:

People: Lord, have mercy.

Lector: We remember before you all whom we love but see no more, especially

Clemens and Marie Maise and Marianne Stuart. Give them eternal rest.

For this we pray to you, O Lord:

People: Lord, have mercy.

Priest: Accept, O God, our thanks and praise for all the blessings of this life, and

above all for the great mercies and promises given to us in Christ our Lord.

By your Holy Spirit, show us how to serve you today, that all may know

you by our love, through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Priest: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in

thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have

left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not

loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly

repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and

forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to

the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Absolution

Priest: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our

Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the

MUSIC NOTES: In Matthew’s version of today’s Gospel story, Jesus replies to Peter, “You

are Peter.” The Latin translation of this phrase (“Tu es Petrus”) and its play on words with

rock (“petram”) has received a great deal of attention from composers writing music for the

Church. Today, we sing a setting of these words by the Italian Renaissance composer

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c. 1525–1594). Palestrina used his polyphonic motet as

the inspiration for a polyphonic mass setting. This kind of “parody” mass was common in

the Renaissance and helped to unify the different sung portions of the liturgy. • Hubert

Parry’s anthem I was glad was written in 1902, the same year that Alexandre Guilmant

dedicated an organ sonata to Charles Galloway, the organist of St. Peter’s (he is

commemorated with a plaque in the narthex). The organ voluntary is taken from a

different sonata by Guilmant. See how this music fits into our last 150 years at
