This year ELCA congregations across the country will be focused on Luther’s Small Catechism because it includes all the basics of faith. The Small Catechism was designed as a teaching tool of the faith, not just within the church but in the home. Luther intended for the home to be the place where faith is first taught and grace is first caught. While this catechism is small in size, it’s BIG on grace. A Word from the Pastor

Where is your life leading?

Ash Wednesday is March 1st. A cross of messy ash will be marked on our foreheads in worship, ash made from the palms waved this past spring as we entered Holy Week. From Luke 9, we will hear how Jesus’ ministry and life now turn toward Jerusalem. From this point onward there is no doubt where his life is leading.

Have you ever been asked in some form, “so, where is YOUR life leading?” It is a question I am sure we have all either been asked, asked ourselves, or at least wondered of others. It is a question about purpose, vocation, and one’s hope for life and the future.

Ash Wednesday is often seen as an island worship service adrift somewhere in February or March, or this doorway we walk through to enter into Lent. Ash Wednesday is more of a catapult that launches us to better fathom this mortal and holy trajectory we are on. Yes, it is a day that we are honest about where life is leading…to death…to dust…to ash. YET, just like Jesus turning toward Jerusalem, Ash Wednesday turns us towards Easter Sunday and resurrection. Ash Wednesday reminds us that our life has a trajectory that goes beyond the grave. Ash Wednesday points us to Jesus and where our life is ultimately leading because of God’s love.

So, in your conversations over the coming weeks, don’t be afraid to ask others where they see life leading them in the years ahead. You never know what trajectory God will send you both on.

Peace, Pastor Vanicek

At our congregational meeting on January 29th, we approved a budget that included the hire of a NEW position at St. Peter’s. The position is for a youth minister focused on teenage youth (Jr. and Sr. High). Drawing from the work of the Fuller Youth Institute, “we believe that churches can become the best place for teenagers and young adults to find answers to their toughest questions on identity, belonging, and purpose.”

We want this person to help us shape a vision for teenage faith formation and be creative in inviting all the ages of our congregation to grow in faith together. If you know if anyone who may fit this position, please point them to our church website (www.splcmf.org) or church office to apply. Applicants should submit a resume, two letters of reference, and a cover letter.

Interviews begin in March. Please pray for our congregation in this exciting time.

Advisory Team

The Advisory Team has continued its diligent work the past few months addressing issues noted during the 2016 Listening Team process. Much of our work has focused on the governance of our congregation and improving the function of committees and the council. At this point team members have met with most of the current committees and are creating binders to be used for ongoing documentation and transfer of information throughout the years. The team has also been coordinating duties for the chair and council liaison of each committee to clarify expectations and streamline communication. Binders will be shared with groups as they are completed over the next few months. Please feel free to contact any member of the team: Steve Reitz, Chuck Wettstein, Betty Matejowsky, and Charlie Selman.

Facility Planning Team

Recently our Council approved the forming of a Facilities Planning Committee to look at the short, mid, and long term needs of our congregation's facilities to accomplish our mission and vision. Team members are: Steve Reitz (chair), Tom Causgrove, Neil Haverlah, Catherine Hicks, Dave Leighton, Jim Wukasch, Pastor Casey and Pastor Vanicek. The team will give periodic updates via the newsletter and bulletin as well as through Temple Talks and at the Semi-Annual meeting. Please feel free to contact a member of the Committee for questions, input or concerns and keep them and this process in your prayers.

Reformation 500

REFORMATION 500 PROJECT

October 31, 2017 will mark the 500thanniversary of when Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the

door of the Wittenberg Church, beginning what we now refer to as the Reformation.

We at St. Peter’s, along with Lutherans and other Protestants worldwide, will not only celebrate this

signi(icant event, but useitasanopportunitytoseekourownreformation. The Reformation is not

just something that happened in 1517 and revolutionized Christian theology, it continues today.

During 2017 we will emphasize outreach within our congregation, our community and our world.

What do we need to change in our church and within ourselves? How can we be better disciples?

Assisting Pastor Casey and Pastor Vanicek in this planning are the Evangelism, Social Outreach, and

Stewardship Teams. We welcome your input and will provide an opportunity for you to post your

reform/renewal ideas on our “church door”.

Bible Studies The Theme of “I Love to Tell the Story”“I Love to Tell the Story”“I Love to Tell the Story”“I Love to Tell the Story” began Sunday, August 28th

Many of us know and love to sing this song. But is it true? Do you love to tell the story of God’s love that we hear in the Bible? Do you love to tell the story of Jesus’ saving grace that we hear in the Bible? Many of us struggle with feeling confident enough with the Biblical story to share it with others as God calls us to do. This is why the Worship & Music Team, Ministry Staff, and Congregation Council have decided to continue the changes we made to our lectionary cycle away from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL). This Fall we will continue with the Narrative Lectionary. We hope that you will fall in love with this story, connect it with your story of faith, and share it with someone who needs to hear the Good News. Here is a glimpse of how the story will unfold:

Continuing Promises: Continuing Promises: Continuing Promises: Continuing Promises: January 8th – February 26th

Throughout Epiphany we traditionally hear stories of how Christ fulfills the promise of the Messiah. In the Narrative Lectionary this is not different, yet hopefully we are more connected to the Old Testament stories on which these fulfilled promise continue through time to Christ and then through Christ to us. We will listen as Jesus is proclaimed as God’s Son at his baptism and then goes on to call disciples and begin his ministry. We will end with the Transfiguration as Jesus is once again proclaimed as God’s Son while on a mountain. As Christ is transfigured by light, we realize we are transfigured by God’s promises through him still today.

Shocking Promises: Shocking Promises: Shocking Promises: Shocking Promises: March 1st – April 2nd

During the season of Lent we witness Jesus turn towards Jerusalem. Jesus is emphatic in his resolve to go there, and in the 40 days of Lent we journey along with him. During this time we are invited to be transformed by his teaching. Through parables like the Good Samaritan, the Lost, and the Rich Man & Lazarus, Jesus teaches that his way is unexpected and shocking yet powerful. Through moments like Weeping over Jerusalem and Encountering Zacchaeus, Jesus teaches that his way is shockingly for any who will accept him. As Christ makes his way to Jerusalem and the cross, we make our way following as his disciples.

St. Peter's Book Club will meet on February 13th, 1:30pm to discuss Small Great Things,

by Jodi Picoult.

Jodi Picoult’s Small Great Things ...is based on the true story of a labor and delivery nurse who was prohibited from caring for a newborn because the father requested that no African-American nurses tend to his baby. In the fictional version, Ruth, the African-American nurse in question, finds herself on trial for events related to the same request made by a white supremacist father. Using the narratives of Ruth, the baby’s father, and the female public defender who takes Ruth’s case, Picoult examines multiple facets of racism. ...Picoult allows readers to draw their own conclusions about how we see ourselves and others in the world. .... --Seira Wilson, The Amazon Book Review

AAAASHSHSHSH WWWWEDNESDAYEDNESDAYEDNESDAYEDNESDAY LLLLITURGYITURGYITURGYITURGY

Ash Wednesday is a solemn day of prayer that begins the season of Lent. The tradition of Lent dates to the 3rd century AD. On this first day of Lent we confess our sin in a litany of repentance (Psalm 51), and during the season's 40 days we are invited to carry out the Lenten disciplines: fasting, prayer, and works of love and charity (alms). These Lenten disciplines are tools of discipleship that can lead us to renewal as we bury all that is holding us back from being truly alive. While Ash Wednesday's immediate subjects may be sin and death, the liturgy of the day also relates to baptism, mercy, and the feast of the resurrection. On Ash Wednesday we are honest about the depths of our sin because God's mercy and power are deeper and wider. We call to mind our own inevitable deaths so that we might, even now, share in the life of the resurrection. We fast and give alms even as we share Christ's feast in which, through the overflowing goodness of God, there is enough for all. Ash Wednesday tries to put sin and separation from God into perspective by holding them in the context of the richness and relative shortness of life. The central ritual action of Ash Wednesday, receiving a cross on our foreheads with ash, echoes our anointing with oil at baptism and reminds us of our mortality. Returning to God's mercy and grace and marked with the cross of Christ, we make our way through Lent marked with a promise for the journey that leads to Easter and resurrection.

2017 Lenten Offering 2017 Lenten Offering 2017 Lenten Offering 2017 Lenten Offering ———— Going GlocalGoing GlocalGoing GlocalGoing Glocal Global + Local = Glocal

The ELCA uses the term “glocal” to describe the intersection of global concerns in our local communities. This year’s Lenten Offering focuses on Global and Local Ministry.

In honor of the Reformation, which began in 1517 when Luther nailed his 95 theses to the Wittenberg

Church door, the St. Peter’s Council has set a BOLDBOLDBOLDBOLD goal of $15170 for our 2017 offering. This is a bigger goal than in years past, but with God’s help and yours, we can NAIL this challenge!

Your gifts will aid locally at St. Peter’s by supporting our new

Youth Minister position ($10,000). With this staff addition we will be able to connect with and grow the faith of our own youth

as well as the youth in our community.

Your gifts will aid globally through the ELCA’s Making All Things New Campaign ($5,170). Our Synod Assembly offering this year is

designated toward this campaign, specifically in the areas of Global Mission, and will support Missionaries, Young Adults in

Global Mission and Women Leaders around the world.

with this fundraiser in a variety of ways! We need people to sign up to provide desserts for any of the meals (sign up sheet is in the Narthex). You can assist one or more of the hosting groups providing the meal or help with set up and clean up. The host groups are School Board, Choir, Church

Council, Men’s BYOB, Sunday School, and Women of St. Peter’s. You can attend the meals and give a donation to our school – there is no charge for the meals, but a free-will offering is collected for the school. Our goal this year was created with the Reformation in mind – 1517 was the year of the

Reformation; we currently have three classes; 1517 x 3 = our goal of $4551! Again, the money earned this year will go to setting up an additional classroom so we can serve even more students! We hope

you enjoy the meals and fellowship. Please see page 11 for the meal schedule.

March 1st also begins pre-registration for the fall semester. We have a waiting list for all classes and will open registration first to church members, current students, and siblings. Pre-registration for

the public will begin on April 1. We are also accepting applications for scholarships until April

15. Please share with your neighbors, friends, and family if they have young children. We love

touching lives of children and want our school to continue to grow and flourish! We are also excited to

have such wonderful and dedicated teachers: Tracy Knight, Anna Womack, Lindsay Pyle, Jeannie

Hanshaw, and Audrey Beltran will all return next year!

March 6 – 10 will be a celebration of Lutheran Schools Week. Students all over the country will celebrate their Lutheran School heritage and will follow the ELEA’s theme of “Loved Beyond Measure”. There will be fun theme days thorough out the week, and the school families will be invited to a special Family Chapel & Picnic on Wednesday, March 8. Please join us in prayers of thanksgiving

for our own St. Peter’s Lutheran School and its impact on our community.

Finally, we have begun plans for the 6th Annual Run for the Son 5K/1K. The event will take place on Saturday, April 29 beginning at 8:00 am at Double Horn Brewing Company. This is a wonderful event for the community – people of all ages are encouraged to attend. We are currently getting race

sponsors, so if you or someone you know wants to be a sponsor, please contact Tracy at

[email protected] for information. Race registration (paper forms and online registration) will be

available SOON so be watching for that! If you are interested in volunteering for the event, please

also contact Tracy. We can’t have the event without our wonderful volunteers – you receive a shirt and

will have a GREAT time! All money earned from the event goes to the Scholarship Fund at St. Peter’s Lutheran School to help families with a financial need attend our school! What a great way to spend a Saturday morning – being active, fellowshipping with others, and HELPING KIDS! We hope you

can be a part!

These are found on many items in your pantry at home. Please clip these, save them, and then turn them into the church office or school office. Each box top is a dime to our school, so they really add up and can give us a nice amount of

SPLAT Life St. Peter’s Lutheran Active Teens Gathering Schedule

SPLAT Sunday School: 9:30am Sunday Mornings Meet across the street at “the SPLAT House.” Allyson Black hosts with a homemade breakfast. Aaron Pyle, Craig Orton, and Pastor Vanicek lead the discussion, activity, or game for the day.

Check your weekly SPLAT+family email for any special details for the month. Let Pastor Vanicek know if you are not receiving this weekly email.

Confirmation Confirmation is what we call an intentional two year process of faith formation guided by the pastors, adults mentors, and special speakers. We dig into the small catechism (The Lord’s Prayer, 10 Commandments, Apostles’ Creed, Baptism, and Communion). We will also do some faith practices, field trips, service projects, and a number of new things this year!

Service and Worship : February and March are about service and worship. In February, the confirmation class

will go from discernment to planning to implementation to evaluating a service project. This unit is about planting the seed that we all have ears and hands for service. March is when confirmation transitions to taking sermon notes during mid-week Lenten worship. The 8th graders begin their final projects due after Easter.

Note the following upcoming dates:

February 15th - Working on service project February 22nd - Implementing service project March 1st - Evaluate how project went (we will do this at normal confirmation time, then go to the 5:30pm Ash Wednesday dinner and worship at 6:30pm.) March 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th & April 5th - Worship notes at 6:30pm mid-week Lenten worship

Meals on Wheels Cookie Project

Each month we will need . . .

17 dozen cookies by Friday before the 3rd Saturday of the month (February 17th & March 17th)

You can bring the cookies throughout the month, and put them in the kitchen freezer marked "Meals on Wheels."

Stewardship

February is known as Heart Month. Valentine’s Day makes us think of the loved ones in our life. The American Heart Association has numerous promotions during the month. We see and hear numerous articles discussing how to prevent heart attacks and strokes. Many of us take medication, exercise, and are involved in activities to make us “heart healthy.” We need to ask, is St. Peter’s heart healthy? Proverbs 3:5 states “trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Matthew 6:21 says “for where your treasure is, there you heart will be also.” Proverbs 4:23 states “above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” What are we doing at St. Peter’s to keep our congregation heart healthy? Looking to the future what do we need to do keep it healthy and growing? What can we do we do with our time, talent, and treasures for St. Peter’s Health? Dale Moquist

The Helping Center needs your help! Let’s fill the basket!!

Please bring non-perishable and canned foods to the church throughout the month and leave in the grocery basket located in the Narthex. The last Sunday of each month (February 26th & March 26th) they will be

collected and delivered to the Helping Center for distribution.
